Default XB : Buy or Not ? Mileage.

Driving a Ford Explorer Sport Trac right now....getting about 20 HWY.

Job change will have me commuting Hwy 50 miles each way a day.
Love the truck but looking at the XB for better mileage.

I was looking at the XB for the gas MPG of 31 / 35 on per WWW.FUELECONOMY.GOV but I'm reading +50 % of the people posting on this site only getting 25-29 MPG with the XB.

I'm 6' 4" and like the room.....but spending 15K on a car that may not get me the 50% better gas mileage ....has me confused.

So on the pure gas mileage question.... XB good buy or not ??
Any other car suggestions in this price range with great MPG ??

Thanks ! San Fran.

I just moved from a 2-door Explorer (an "Expedition" model- named before they had the Expedition- basically a Sport) to an xB. I was getting about 19mpg on the Explorer and am now34-35 mpg on my xB (mostly highway, but also errands in town- not a lot of stop and go). Plus I love driving it.

I am keeping my Explorer for winters and to cart my 3 Newfoundlands around in- although all 3 actually DO fit in the xB.

Just my .02.

Many people buy the xB and start reporting gas mileage right away. Until the car has 3,000-5,000 miles on the engine, mileage reports don't mean a whole lot. After 5,000 miles mileage reports are more realistic and accurate.

I got rid of a GMC Sonoma 4x4 getting 18 mpg average over 40,000 miles. On the second tank of gas I went 272 miles on my XB and I averaged 32 mpg!Looks like it's going to be a good thing what with the price of gas going crazy.

All I know is if you aren't pounding it, have the a/c blasting you rarely ever have to visit Abdul.

Without question you should get 30+ miles per gallon.

There are some non-hybrids that are rated with better fuel economy than an xb. i believe that even the xa/echo get better mpgs due to lower weight and aerodynamics.

if you just want something to scoot around in, there are quite a few options. but IMHO, when you factor in price, cost of ownership / fuel economy, and cargo space, you can't beat an xB.

yea, I think the corolla gets close to 40 mpg or something. Of course, you don't have the same space as the xb...
