whats up made my own cold air intake for the Xb. What I did was took out the really crappy super restrictive factory filter, and made sure the air box was clean. Next I took of the tube that sucks cool air from the drive side fender. Next I took of the bracket that holds tube and cut off about 4 inchs. Then I took a K&N style air filter and placed it on the end. You then have to put the pipe back on the aid box but with the filter installed you have to do it from the bottom. Stick the pipe end first then the filter and secure it back to the box with the factory clamp. Also you may want to temove the tube going to the thronle body to make things easier. lastly you may want to loosen the battery hold down, so you could slide the battery balck a little. I think it makes a diffrence power wise just like other companies. I haven't dynoed my car yet but I know it made a diffrence + you may already have a filter just laying around so it was free at least until I save up to buy a complete intake kit.

Makes sense. An interesting alternative for the short term. So basically the only thing getting altered (irreversibly) is the intake tube? and no messing with the MAF... Dude, you're a regular McGyver.8)

heh i did a similar thing to my xA.

I bought an Injen intake thinkin that it would fit but it didn't and i couldn't return it. So then i just installed the injen tube and extended it w/ the stock tube down to the driver side fender. :) ... and im happy.

I just unscrewed the intake tube and tucked it down below the headlight. No modifications.

I just finished doing this in about 20 minutes while at work. I picked up a $ 25 Ractive Air Cleaner. { its nice having a speed shop 2 doors away from the office }
I removed the old air cleaner
I unbolted the air intake and cut it about 4 inches from the spot where it bolts to the frame. Sliped the filter over the hose tigtened the clamp and called it a day.

It sounds a hell of alot better !!! As for the road test I have a 45 minute drive home everything from stop and go to flat out on the highway. When I get home I will give an update on any noticable performance gains.

What size is the tube? Maybe I'll just get a universal K&N filter...

The filter I used has a 3 inch inlet. I put it on right at the spot where it is ribbed :D That point of the tube is right around 3 inches.

intakes aren't that expensive, that could've been 30 bucks towards a actual brand intake. it only sounds different cause theres nothing muffling the sound of the air being sucked in. and i seriously doubt it's making hp like other intakes (even though they don't make much). i used to be like that and start cutting crap and modding the stock stuff in my eclipse. when you wanna go back to stock later on you'll regret it. just get a real intake.
