Default I get an odd noise from engine comparment on startup...help!

I have a 2005 xB ... I think ever since I have gotten my scion this has been happening, the first start up of the day I turn on my car and go into reverse and pull outta the garage...somewhere inbetween turning on the car and getting on the street to put into 1st to pull away, I get this really odd noise from inside engine compartment somewhere. I hear this noise that almost sounds like something is being thrown back and forth inside the engine bay. Sounds like it hits the body panel...from where and what it is I have no clue. its like a short "clunk clunk" actually it sounds exactly like a rock got kicked up into the wheel well and goes clunks around 2x in it - thats the most accurate description but I know its not that cuz this happens at like 3mph lol!

Im hoping someone will just tell me this is something these thing do that it "resets" or does something after its not been runnin a certain amount of time. Because this does not happen anywhere else for the rest of the day, till the next morning.

Any Ideas?

Does it only do it when turning? If ur not sure, go try it out.

The only "clunk clunk" that comes to mind is the "click click"ing of a bad CV joint.

better not be a CV join, its not that type of clunk clunk when u switch gears....I had that on my truck before I bought this and it cost a ton to get fixed, it better not be that. This happens even before I turn the steering wheel as I pull straight out of the driveway

this seems to affecting nothing while driving either...so thats a good thing so far...

Ill pay more attention to my wheel turning tho when I start up car and be sure that it does or does not happen before I turn my wheels. Ill post back with results.

If it does happen when I first turn my wheels then its prolly the steering thing like yours? remember this only happens the beginning of every day, no startups till the next day does this happen again.

VSC, pg 98 in your owner manual third paragraph it states "you may hear a sound in your engine compartment for a few seconds just after the vehicle begins moving. This means that the system is in the self-check mode, but does not indicate a malfunction".

Could this be the sound you r hearing? I know I don't hear anything when I first start out, but my stereo is always on too.

yeah I read this also, when I first got my car...this just doesnt seem like a "checking" sound but then again...if it is then woot! no worries, and Im hopin all that this is. if I recall correctly I think I heard it a few times on the box I bought before this one, I only had it for 2 weeks tho so, Im not sure if I noticed it during that time or not.

but heh if this is some sort of mechanical check then that comment in the book makes sense, but if its something as simple as a computer check...then I doubit it would cause that sound.

anyways I guess for now I will just not worry about it, but if it starts happening every singl time I turn on the car or starts changing somehow, then I will have it looked at. Thanks for all ur help guyz =)

Default mine too

my 04 a\t does the exact same thing. kinda sounds like something getting flipped out of the way by the tire? haven't done alot of checking on it because its hard to replicate the sound. seems to do it mostly when vehicle is cold. maybe the whole system check thing?

The VSC is more than a "computer" check. It's an electro/mechanical check initiated by the computer. It could very well be what the problem is, though the dealer may be the only one who knows for sure...
