View Full Version : Show of hands: tC Custom fit sub box (w/pics)
Streeter 09-24-2005, 08:58 PM I just met a guy who works with fiberglass a lot who makes a lot of custom fit sub boxes. He has one in his Tiburon and if I didn't know any better I'd say that it was stock. (Pics below!)
He's made boxes for several different types of cars. He says that making one for the tC would be much easier than for the Tib, and he's got a 12" sub fitted along with an amp attached to it - and it SOUNDS great.
My question to you is how many people would seriously consider buying one of these (or a set if you want both sides of the rear done)? I told him that I'm sure that there would be a lot of interest seeing as this is ScionLife. If you're wondering about quality - I wouldn't suggest this if it wasn't absolutely awesome. 8)
No money - just a show of hands of people willing to spend between $350 (unpainted) - $450 (painted) per side on a real quality fiberglass sub enclosure that fits along the sides of the rear with no showing seams or anything.
These are from his Tiburon, we're talking about the same kind of setup.

tc702 09-24-2005, 09:02 PM may be interested...but would like some pics first
stl_tc_king 09-24-2005, 09:52 PM sounds like a good idea to me, but personally all i need is a box. I already have the rest.
BigWill 09-24-2005, 09:57 PM only if they cam make a 15" square box to fit my sub
Streeter 09-24-2005, 10:08 PM sounds like a good idea to me, but personally all i need is a box. I already have the rest.
The box is what we're talking about. The rest is up to you.
tChillin 09-24-2005, 10:10 PM I'm in the market for one. I'd be intrested in seeing scketches.
ack154 09-24-2005, 10:51 PM Moved to ICE... :lalala:
Eppopipe 09-24-2005, 11:14 PM im in
Oznium_com 09-25-2005, 12:12 AM I prefer not stock looking
Streeter 09-25-2005, 12:40 AM I'm waiting for some pictures of his - then you'll get a better idea of what I'm talkin about.
I'm definately interested.
This has to be a fairly large volume (1.25ft^3), sealed, and very rigid box for the 12w7 I'm running!
JDMJim 09-25-2005, 12:59 AM wife has a JL 8" glassed into the passenger quarter. also Boston 6" comps and a JL 6 channel bi-amped to them. Car sounds way better than the Scion sound.
tcsciontist 09-25-2005, 05:28 AM *raises hand*
tCformee 09-25-2005, 06:24 AM umm hell yeah where do i sign???
deep2k 09-25-2005, 12:16 PM I would be but would like to see some pics first
grimace 09-25-2005, 01:04 PM i'm definately interested as well, but like everyone else, pics would be awesome
Streeter 09-26-2005, 01:04 AM Updated with pics...
WarrenSteve 09-26-2005, 01:14 AM how do you get to your spare tire.
Streeter 09-26-2005, 01:37 AM It looks like the left panel of the floor piece would be cut off and the foam piece underneath on the left side would be removed to provide the necessary sub box volume.
Munch 09-26-2005, 01:42 AM I'm interested for both sides.
mattssi 09-26-2005, 01:49 AM Im interested - looks nice
Streeter 09-26-2005, 01:49 AM I'm interested for both sides.
That's a possibility too.
Eppopipe 09-26-2005, 02:34 AM if both sides...i have cash in hand.
Fhe1079 09-26-2005, 04:15 AM Hell's yeah if you can make it in Carbon Fiber.
PRE5TON 09-26-2005, 04:35 AM Yea I would probably pick it up for $300. Wondering how much for both sides though?
Streeter 09-26-2005, 05:31 AM Hell's yeah if you can make it in Carbon Fiber.
That would be TIGHT - but unfortunately he doesn't do carbon fiber (yet)
Gambit7 09-27-2005, 06:01 AM count me as interested but just for both sides
jcw11 09-27-2005, 06:16 AM dito here!
RoudyruffKK 09-27-2005, 07:22 AM i'm getting my 15" fiberglass box built for around $400, top notch quality work. 2.2^3 after displacement all under car storage accessible and more then half my trunk usable. mine isn't painted though because that'd be more :(
Streeter 09-27-2005, 04:28 PM Price - looking at $350 unpainted, $450 painted for each side.
Updated original post.
They would be built for 12" subs, with an adapter for 10s if you want.

No package deal for like $600 unpainted?
jcw11 09-28-2005, 12:28 AM I don't need the amp on the side and what is the volume of air space? when will you be taking pre orders?
Stainlesslive 09-28-2005, 12:36 AM I am definately interested. A local shop wanted to charge me $1800 do build me one. How much extra will the adapter be for 10s & would that not cause rattling??
Serialk1llr 09-28-2005, 03:25 PM VERY interested. Looking for right rear wheel well placement for my JL 12w3v2D4 and JL 500/1 amp. Unpainted
SkaTG2k3 09-28-2005, 03:40 PM i would pick up both sides built for 10" subs as long as it looks clean. I have two mono amps and a 4 ch. amp. i wonder where all that would go?
RoudyruffKK 09-28-2005, 07:06 PM i just got my fiberglass box in the car, costed me about $350-400 (i forgot) carpeted. fit for a 15" sub with internal volume AFTER sub displacement is 2.2cuft. i used the left side of the trunk so i still have more then half of my trunk usable and doesn't block the right side of the seats when folded down. i have all the storage panels underneath the car usable as well. will take pictures in a few hours
Streeter 09-30-2005, 05:17 AM sooooo......
Serialk1llr 09-30-2005, 11:45 AM Bumpity bump bump: wanna know if this is happening in the next 2 weeks, otherwise my amp will be here by then and i'll go local :|
Yes, i'm impatient :P
DTRUONG_112 09-30-2005, 01:54 PM count me in.
BIGRKtC 09-30-2005, 02:12 PM I'm definately interested if the specs are perfect. My opinion, drop the price down 50$ or have the price include shipping. Also make sure they are created with additional space from the rear seats so they can still recline, kinda like the stock bazooka is built. If these 2 things happen I can garuntee you won't sell them fast enough. There is a guy on yoursciontc.com that has been working on mass producing a similar set up, but I don't think its ever going to happen. Either way, the interest and response shown on that thread was amazing. So if you price it right and get a good quality box there is a tremendouse market out there. Just wondering though, how will you have a built in amp if every has a different amp size?

That's a very good idea - I hadn't thought about that. I will make sure the seats can still recline!
About the amp thing - I don't know what to say really - there is only so much space to put one on. I have a Pioneer 700w amp that I will sell to get a smaller Alpine amp. Basically he'd make a universal amp mount and if it fits, it fits, if not put it somewhere else.
Also, volume will be adjustable box to box... won't know a maximim volume untill it's produced, but it can be as small as you want.
So here's who I've got:
Maybe
tc702
stl_tc_king

So that's roughly 20-25 boxes. Take a look and see if I've got you in the right list. I don't know if you all have looked but I put some pictures of a Tiburon application on the first post so you can kinda see what to expect.
Whocares05050 09-30-2005, 03:18 PM The work looks pretty good to me, however can they easily be taken out in case you have to get to the tailights or spare tire?
Streeter 09-30-2005, 10:19 PM It looks like this will be a replacement for the side panels. You will be sacrificing the storage space on either side of the tire. I think you would be actually cutting the side panel(s) off of the floor piece. Haven't worked all of that out yet. I'm sure they would be removable.
I can get this process started as early as Wednesday and could have something to show by the next week BUT the guy lives an hour away and I'd have to leave my tC with him - problem is I don't have another ride! Will try to work something out...
tc702 10-08-2005, 10:16 PM bump for update!
Streeter 10-11-2005, 04:06 PM Update is: when the guy gets his pickup truck back pretty soon I will be able to borrow that while he's got my car making the molds for these boxes. Hopefully that won't be too long.
Serialk1llr 10-11-2005, 04:53 PM draven301, I'm A yes with conditions :P
Gotta fit a JL 12w3v2 correctly, gotta be in the right rear well behind the tire. Then we'll go from there :)

If that's a standard 12" sub size, then I'm sure it'll work. We're doing both sides of the back.
put me down for a maybe for both sides :)
Streeter 10-13-2005, 04:22 AM Cool.
shawn30 10-13-2005, 04:47 AM sign me up
05-RS1 10-13-2005, 05:26 AM very interested but seems a lil pricey to me. i dont know that much bout custom fiberglass boxes so my bad if this is really a great deal. lol
ChicagosFinest 10-13-2005, 05:43 AM The majority of the money goes into labor.. it takes about a day to do a box.. this is unless it is a prefab box. I am about to get into fiberglassing, however I am waiting untill I actually have the time to do it.. I'd say $450+ is what you'd pay for an enclouser for a single 12" sub.. but then again I haven't had the tC priced at any shops..
onefunkyfreshdj 10-13-2005, 06:01 AM I'm interested in both sides for 10" unpainted
Beantowntc 10-13-2005, 07:36 AM Nice I'd be down for one side unpainted......
jcw11 10-20-2005, 05:17 PM There is a guy on yoursciontc.com that has plans for a single 10 design. I took the picture in to a few locale shops and they said it would cost me $800-$1K to build. With this design I can get both sides done for less and have 12"'s instead of 10"!
Serialk1llr 10-20-2005, 09:26 PM but the question is, WHEN will we have a product : |
Got my amp, my sub, now all i need is an enclosure and I can actually ENJOY them :(
zdsystems 10-21-2005, 04:36 AM Hey Guys,
This is Derek with "ZDSystems." I am the "guy" who draven has been in contact with. I am ready and willing to get going on your guys's enclosures, the only thing I need is a R+D Car. A Car for whcih I can create the first boxes. Once I get the mold created, I'll be able to turn out these enclosures quite rapidly.
I've been keeping an eye on this since the start, and as soon as I pick up another vehicle i can lend draven, we'll get these rolling.
Any other questions/ideas/comments just let me know.
Thanks! I look forward to doing business with you guys :)
Streeter 10-21-2005, 04:41 AM ^^^ yup, that's the guy 8)
Eppopipe 10-21-2005, 04:56 AM so then....round about price?
toastbox 10-21-2005, 05:13 AM I'm in for 1 side. A yes, not a maybe.
snowbuddytC 10-21-2005, 05:20 AM yeah im interested for both sides.. but is this only limited to the area around where your friend lives? or is it like a business and can ship it out or something
Streeter 10-21-2005, 01:00 PM Can ship it yes
Serialk1llr 10-21-2005, 03:25 PM where are you located? Maybe a scionlife member lives close by...

i doubt that Alpineman is ever going to mass produce the box on yoursciontc. That box has been in the works since February. 8 months later, and no progress means it is NEVER going to see light of day.
I am happily waiting for this one, provided it doesnt take more than 2 months to come out. After that, I'll be forced to find another solution.
toastbox 10-21-2005, 03:35 PM very interested but seems a lil pricey to me. i dont know that much bout custom fiberglass boxes so my bad if this is really a great deal. lol
If you took this to a shop, they'd charge easily in excess of 700 for this. So ~400 is roughly half the price, so this is actually a very good indeed.
lriicelboy 10-21-2005, 03:58 PM I'd hit it.
Streeter 10-21-2005, 06:01 PM Another solution, huh? :) Like this is a government contract or something.
Soon as D gets his truck back I'll have something to drive while he starts on these boxes in my car.

Lol, something like that. I found a place that has mas produced a trunk mounted enclosure. I've been avoiding that one because it replaces the foam storage on the pasenger side. Or I might tap Harmonic tc to build something for me, similar to what you;ve got going. He's done some excellent work on stuff, and I have the utmost faith he can do this correctly :)
EddyXP 10-21-2005, 08:01 PM Id bu 1 12" for sure, please let me know ocne its done, painted

I got quoted $600 for a custom fab box :(
imsonofagun 11-01-2005, 04:07 AM I went to shop around the corner from me...said they charge $700/day for making fiberglass enclosures....and they take at least 3 days to make them. Nothing fancy either. They have done some decent work from what I can tell. But not good enough for $2100 just for the enclosure.
Keith 11-01-2005, 04:55 AM ok...
put me down for one... i'll even fly down to pick up.. as long as you can bring it to the airport..
Keith.
SkaTG2k3 11-01-2005, 05:12 AM well... my fiberglass guy quoted me for $800 for the enclosure... i am going to jump on this for both sides, most def.
I still wonder 2 things... what are the adapters going to be to make my 2 alpine type s subs fit, and sound good? and can I get one that will make the v12 mono amp fit nicley, kind of like the vpower amp fit in the demo pic?
RFR79 11-01-2005, 05:34 AM I was quoted $940 for 10" enclosures, on each side, painted and removable at a local shop in the bay area. They will allow the rear seats to recline as well. The set up will be similiar to the Bazooka setup but more rounded shaped. The amp will be fan cooled (so it doesn't over heat) and fit in the passanger side storage of the spare tire compartment. PM me if you live in the Bay Area and would like the name of the shop.
ChicagosFinest 11-01-2005, 07:32 AM I'm building my own right now.. more showey then custom fitted.. but it's easily removed and looks banging.. From what I've done so far this seems like a fair deal...
Serialk1llr 11-01-2005, 11:44 AM Bump for info, dammit. Still waiting :P
zdsystems 11-02-2005, 02:35 AM Im ready and willing to get started, all I need is a test car for 3-5 days max to get a perfect mold built. Unless i can figure something else out with Draven, anyone in the Southern MN/Wisconson/Iowa region have a TC they can do without for a couple days?
You will get my boxes at straight parts cost if you let me use your car for a mold. (no worries, nothing will get wrecked)
Let me know guys.
snowbuddytC 11-02-2005, 08:01 AM i have a quick question.. would it be better to power 2 subs with a mono amp? or a 2+ channel amp? (as in which would you get the most power out of your subs with?) thanks !!
zdsystems 11-02-2005, 08:10 PM mono is always best for your subs.
wilder 11-02-2005, 08:39 PM Looks nice. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Nick06tC 11-02-2005, 11:24 PM I will be down for one. I will be mounting a JL W6 12 in it. Whats your airspace gonna be? And mounting depth? And any alterations to the trunk?
RFR79 11-04-2005, 09:18 AM So...........
Nick06tC 11-04-2005, 10:21 AM Yeah we deffinetly need more info if we plan on spending this kinda cash.
Serialk1llr 11-04-2005, 11:42 AM bump bump. I think they're still looking for a doner car..... Sorry to say, but I think I'm going with a generic box for my setup :( I NEEEED to hear it.
zdsystems 11-05-2005, 03:15 PM No worries guys. Donor car should be setup... Draven is still going to donate his. Mounting Depth should be near 9-10" and enclosure volume arund 1.2 cubic feet give or take a couple inches.
I cannot give exact Dimensions/Displacement untill I have one built. I assure you guys, its more than worth the wait.

Serialk1llr 12-12-2005, 01:55 AM I think everyone who posted is/was interested. Just a lack of progress killed it. If you do one of these, I'm looking to replace the panel so i can sink my amp as deep as possible and save space. Thats just my particular want.
However, After this dissapointment I myself am probably going to say F-it and get an ugly box unless you produce some results pretty darn quick ;)

I'm very seriously interested in this. I'd want it to replace the panel (flush), I don't need anythign fancy, such as an amp rack, or anything like that.

From what I can tell looks like a box then a false panel.. or the old panel reused... Probally do mine a bit different... But it will turn out good.
Serialk1llr 12-12-2005, 12:13 PM please, keep us updated as many still are looking for this type of product.
Isaac 12-12-2005, 07:24 PM I've been in touch with the guy, and we're trying to work something out.

wilder 12-13-2005, 01:17 AM Someone make it happen!
RFR79 12-13-2005, 03:59 AM I'll be waiting for this setup rather than designing my own depending on how fast you produce these for the public.
What part of the bay... im about to get my shop lease next week... I do fiberglass maybe you can be the first test car....
I live in Pittsburg. I think we have PMed each other before. You live in Concord right? But yes I am desperately in need of a custom fiberglass box for my tc. I have had 2 10"s in there boxes for months now and still no speaker box to put them in. PM me with some contact info if you are still looking for a test car.I would like the box to look similar to the one on the first post of this forum.
Sorry for the late response,I've been a work'o'holic lately.
audiobahntc 12-13-2005, 04:47 AM Yessir, i'd also like to see dual 10 " enclosures (one on each side), i'd pay top dollar. I like 10s better cuz they don't require as much enclosure volume and they're more efficient. PM me and let me know if possible...
Eppopipe 12-13-2005, 06:08 AM me too.....stilll waiting....someone pm me.
tikbhoy 12-13-2005, 01:34 PM im interested in a false floor type but sitll retaining the spare tire. PM me anybody local to Socal

Please....
imsonofagun 12-14-2005, 08:43 PM It would be nice if someone started producing something for us tC guys. I've seen something on e-Bay where it fits in the tC's spare tire. It's ok I guess, but I'd like to avoid doing that if possible. For now I have to keep rocking the Audiobahn amplified tube.
Keith 12-17-2005, 06:12 PM any new news on this custom fit sub box....
Whats happning... any thing ???
Thanks...
Keith.

jcw11 12-21-2005, 06:02 PM looking for a single 12, 1 cubic foot inclosure. replaces the panel and has no amp rack.
ZodtC 12-22-2005, 07:37 AM i like it, only if it would be in 12 inch.... or 10 and i would like both sides too or able to pick one side i guess...
RFR79 12-22-2005, 09:23 PM I don't think the author of this forum is ever going to go thru with make this box. I mean the first post was in september and all that we are waiting on is a donor car. How long does it take to accomplish that one task? Then we still have to wait for him to make them...Sorry draven but things aren't looking good.
brownbanana 12-24-2005, 01:15 PM im looking on keith to come through with this over the otherg guy...september aint so bad, the thread on yoursciontc started i dont know how long ago and still isnt in production.

Serialk1llr 01-25-2006, 09:00 PM dude, this project has died long ago.
-Keith- 01-25-2006, 11:42 PM still waiting on a date to be able to get a car around here to do one
Nick06tC 01-25-2006, 11:47 PM yeah this is pretty much worthless, I had so planed on it. but i ended up going and getting something done. Not to bach but if it takes this many months just to line up a car for the initial build, what does that say about how long it will take to fill orders?

I pm'd you and replied on this forum, sorry you didn't get em. I am still willing to be a donor car for the fitment of this custom box as long as you would be willing to charge me just parts and labor. It's up to you -Keith- ??? PM me and we can work something out, I check SL a few times a day
Streeter 01-27-2006, 07:59 PM Hi, author here.
My guy has been out of touch lately. I'm guessing it'll be more of a spring time thing. Sorry about that but whenever things do start looking better I will be sure to notify everybody here.
Wish I could give better news for the short term. If this guy doesn't pan out I still plan to find somebody else who wants to make $15000. ;)
