I finally got my self a Tein Coilovers....I've been waiting for it to come for almost 2months....and I got it yesterday! It's supposed to give you more comfortable ride then usual sporty ride. And it's also non adjustable, but which if fine with me since I'm only gonna ride my car just for cruise around. I am gonna get this installed soon, as soon as I can find a spot available, I'll keep you guys posted on the response to what I have to say about Tein coilovers. :)

That's cool. Are they all non adjustable? I mean, is there a tein set that is adjustable? On a side note, where did you get the hood from?

i think he got the JDM tein wagon coilovers for bB...only height adjustable...
there will be a new tein SS coilovers for xB soon...but this one is height and damping adjustable...

yeah, I got the JDM Tein Wagon series, and you guys are right, it's just HEIGHT adjustable, but because I want the COMFORT rather then bumpy harsh ride. I've got sick of my other car's harsh ride, so I've decided to get xB and have a comfortable ride. But I'd expect to Tein to outperform the stock, since they are better then cheesy stock system. I've talked to Randode, and he said he'll be busy for couple of weeks so I'll try to find anyone with some knowledge and experinece with coilvers. I'll get these installed ASAP!!

I'll do it, but this week is way too hectic. I have plans this weekend, and jury duty monday (yuck). So if you can wait, I can probably do it the following weekend. I would rather do the install on the weekend if possible.

i had heard that one of the Tein coilover makers offered a remote to adjust dampening from inside the vehicle....

anyone know who makes those?

thanks

u meant Tein EDFC(Electronic Damping Force Controller)?
i thought tein makes them...

kagero79

Yeah, EDFC is made by Tein, BUT you have to have SPECIFIC model of coilover. Those are offered in sporty lines, and NOT wagon series or non-adjustable (dampening) models. So before you buy EDFC, check with tein catalog to see if which ever model you buy is compatible with EDFC, because EDFC its self cost about $300. By the way, EDFC only adjusts dampenings in 2channels (Front 2 shocks & rear 2 shocks) and also saves like 2 or 3 settings, and you can recall those by touch of a button. Randy, let me know when you're available for install, I can be impatient sometimes when it comes to fancy gadgets like this  have fun with jury duty.

The Tein FLEX model coilovers are the only ones you can use the EDFC with. And to the best of my knowledge--they are not out yet (FLEX) for the xB.

i heard those were in development from Steve at Carson Scion/Toyota

EDFC can also be used with super street coilovers. some cars it only works if you get the tein upper mount (like my 91 integra)

hope fully tein will come out with the basic kit for the xb by the time i get mine

I was just reading on the Tein website that they are in developement on the SS series of dampers for the xB. The SS has adjustable damping!

I just got my Tein Coilovers in today. There is a BIG difference from stock!!! I can't believe my xB rides so SMOOTH! I was expecting the ride to be a stiff bumpy and adjustable. But it was money well spent I can say that for sure. I can take the corner lot more stable with all 4 wheels gripping, there's no more of tipsy feel with stock. I'm guessing Tein SS series will be more sporty and not to mention ADJUSTABLE, but since my xB isn't a race car, I wouldn't need to adjust dampers, I'm satisfied with what I got and how much I spent on it, I don't think I want to pay more to have a extra feature when in my opinion is satisfactory. :) Oh did I mention I can only one finger between tire & fender? 8) I got 18" Axis Spider so it's pretty low now. I hope to see you guys one of these days at the meeting.

I got mine through my friend's shop, HighEnd Autosports, they're located in city of Covina ask Mike for pricing and I believe he's selling it about bit less then $900(my gues). If you guys are planning on waiting for SS model, I'm sure price is more higher, so if you're just looking to get the car's looks and ride quality, Tein Wagon series (one I got) should satisfy most people.

i'm probably going to switch to coilovers once more people get air suspension and i'm not original anymore. i like tein, but i don't think the wagon coilovers will be good enough for track use. maybe i'm wrong. anyway, i'm glad it worked out for you and hopefully some US distributors will make it easy for us to buy high quality coilovers without spending $2000 on DMS gold or JIC magic.

I only bought Tein mainly for comfort, of course I'm not gonna run my lil box on track, I'd be all over the place with comfy ride  I just want to ride nicely when I'm on date or something 8) I wouldn't wanna spill drinks on my date  If I decide to run my box on track, I'd buy Cusco or JIC's sporty models no doubt.

what is the range you had to choose [inches] from to lower it with the Teins?

Did mike at highend motorsports sponsor you. I was talking to him the other day and he said he hooked someone up with wheels and a carbon fiber hood. That fool is funny. Last time I was there he was high as hell but he can get the craziest prices if you know him. I got a complete nitrous kit off him for like $150.

Tein coilover lowers about 3" at most, and my car is lowered by little over 2". So far so good, no problem with bouncing at all so I'll keep on riding to see if there's gonna be a change on a ride quality. Oh I'm not sponsored by Mike at all, but I do support his shop with his sticker on my car, and I guess I do get fairly good deals, I just don't ask much, as long as I get a quality stuff at reasonable prices. I guess it'a all about how you treat them that may gets you better deals.

Updates on my ride quality, it's been about a week since I have it installed, I definatelly can feel the difference on quality between stock & Teins. I noticed it doesn't bounce like it used to on stock, and how car was unstable at high speed cornering. Tein can handle really good on corners, rear is LOT more stable, i can feel the car in balance. I can even out corner those civics!!! 8) hehe...but since I'm using 18s, people will have a different feel to their car depending on the wheels. I'm sure 16,17s are much more comfortable then 18s when it comes to bad roads. My xB only has bit less then one finger space between tire & fender

Just make sure when adjusting your height of your car, you might want to have your wheels on wood blocks before removing jack, if you lower your car too much, jack will get stuck under your car!

Have you done an alignment yet? If not, do it now! I couldn't believe how much toe out I had in the front. No wonder the car turned in so quickly, but was a little darty at freeway speeds. Total toe out (wheels point out \ / like that) was -0.30 and the rear was toe'd in 0.75. Unfortunately, the cheap twist beam rear axle has no adjustment for anything, so I'm stuck with that and -1.0 degrees camber.

Anyone make something for rear toe adjustment? Anyway, after the alignment my bB is more relaxing to drive on my 80mile commute.

I may be passing my Teins onto Casey's bB and switching to Cusco's coilovers....I'm just not sure if I can live with giant Cusco graphics down the side of my car for a year!

I haven't done my alignments yet. I'm not planning on having my wheels aligned until I can find the height I want. I'm still adjusting my height now and then to see which is best, so that I won't have to get my wheels aligned every time I adjust it. I curious if Cusco is adjustable? I know Tein have their new models coming up with adjustable one. I also seen some Blitz kit, that one is semi adjustable, it said you can adjust a rear damper only. I guess there are all different kinds of coilovers now....I guess it's all in owner's taste. :)

I had mine dropped as low as it would go when I first had it installed, which Tein claims is -2.5" front and -1.7" rear. It looked mean with a very aggressive rake. Here are the install pics: http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/shivpathak@sbcglobal.net

I think the front suspension was bottoming out at the lowest setting, so I raised it up about 0.25-0.5" and the ride is much better. Plus I don't scrape as often anymore.

The Cusco coilovers are also non adjustable, but have the option of camber plates in the front. That would help to even out the negative camber, since mine is at -1.2L and -0.9R after the alignment. The only thing I'm worried about is the drop with the Cuscos. The Japanese website says the drop is from -60mm (2.3") to -100mm (4") which may be too low for me. There's no way to drive the car with a 4" drop, and not being able to raise it above 2.3" poses some problems. I'll going to find out some more about the kit before I switch.

There are a number of coilover kits available in Japan, from Tein to GReddy. The problem is finding the one that will handle US roads. :(

Ok so Cusco is non-adjustable too then. Well I guess you have to sacrafice one for another, I think being able to adjust cambers are nice, but I'm little weirdo so I like cambers! So far, I figured if I get some coilover that are more RACE spec, I'd be all over the road bouncing and pounding my head to the ceiling, so I just check around and found Tein least sporty, especially with wagon series. I love the way Tein rides as far as how LOW I have it at, I have 18s and I can put one finger in front and back is little more then one finger of space left. They don't seem to bottom out, as far as I'm driving daily on streets & fwys so I think I made a pretty wise decision going with Tein. I hope to have a body kit in near future...(if I don't lose my cash) so height of my car should be good enough for the kit :) I don't think I can have 4" drop on mine...especially around my neighborhood...too many pot holes!!! :x no to mention so many poorly maintained roads with gaps, those are real pain for cars with lowprofile tires and lowered.

camber plates are available on higher model full coilover systems... jic, cusco, tein, apex, and etc.. they all have it.
the camber plates allow u to control camber so u won't have horrible camber.
as for cusco.. 2.3-4" sounds fun to me.. at least your car won't be like lower in the back and higher in the front like most springs out there.

as for tein.. 900 bucks for 2-3" drop? how much are shocks and springs? spy's drop a tad over 2" and shocks for the car won't cost more than 400 bucks.
tein is making one for the states that can lower the car MORE and the price isnt' as steep. the teins wagon setup goes for 7-8 bills all over the net.

i rahter go cusco. at least i can get a decent drop.. and as for dropping it 4".. IT CAN BE DONE.. just not on big ___ rims most scion owners run..

i like that much better than the conventional 2"-3"

is the tein coilover system firmer or softer than stock?

kagero79
11-18-2003, 09:12 AM
Tein Coilovers are FIRMER but you won't feel much difference, it's way more stable at high speed then stock. I know stock ride is some what bounces, but with tein, you don't get the bounce, that's the noticeable difference. But I think Tein Wagon series are softer than other coilovers (like some other real sporty ones) since it's basically aimed for COMFORT.

Tanabe has coilovers coming out sometime this week. They have 2 types: one with helper springs and one without. I think the MSRP was like $950 for the ones with helper springs and $100 less for ones without. Trying to get my hands on some.

Well, I had fun at the show in Japan where my cousin had his Stepwagon(think of it as a larger xb) and slammed it all the way, but he totally forgot about leaving any space for the jack, (his car had coilovers) so he had to gather up couple of guys to lift enought space to slide the jack. Is 5" drop leave any enough space to slide any jack underneath? I'm pretty happy with my 3" drop, no jack, no scrape!

But heck, that's daily driving height, and we just took it to socal last weekend too. Noooo problems at all.
