Default Did anyone urge you against buying a tC?

I have a couple friends who are into the "drift" scene... friends who are absolutely appalled at me deciding to get a tC. they've told me time over that i'm going to hate this car and so on, comparing it to a corolla (my current car) and how it would be no different.

i wish these f*@k$ would realize i'm buying the car that i want (tC), not the car they want me to buy.

(which by the way... is an 04 RX-8 ).

I guess what i really want to know is if anyone else encountered friends/family who were completely against your idea of getting a tC... and what'd you do about it?

For those wannabe drifters? I asked them how much drifting I'm going to be doing. And whatever the answer (sometimes I got "oh.." and sometimes I got "you can take it to the drift tracks sometime") I told them I prefer to go fast around corners with sticky *performance* tires.

They were dumb friends anyways..

edit: I added a lot more to this because I realized I had a more relevant situation happen to me.

After mentioning I had a TC I had a coworker tell me he thought front wheel drive cars were pointless because of torque steer and . . . um, speed or something. Well, I didn't need to give him a mouthful or anything because I really don't care what he thinks, he's wrong. I spend a couple of hours every day in my car and most of that is in traffic with other drivers, not on a race track. But I can zip across highway lanes as fast as I'd ever need with this car. I don't usually notice rx-8's tearing up the road next to me in normal driving conditions. Plus those are a pretty comfortable couple of hours I spend every day. The TC has an optional direct ipod connection that works pretty damned well so I have practically my whole music collection with me in the car - with steering wheel-mounted controls - that is also pretty nice. Standard stereo sounds great to me (though not audiophile quality I'm sure). My monthly payments are decent. The dealer didn't have a chance to rip me off because of pure pricing. The car looks cool, in an Audi sort of way, I think. Gas mileage is better than an rx-8. And being a toyota, the car will definitely last longer than an rx-8.

Here is the car and driver review of the rx-8:

Do your friends really like lugging around all the extra oil in the trunk?

So I guess the answer is I'd just give them the facts about what matters to me.

The Mazda RX-8 has reliability issues, poor fuel economy, and costs more from the get go. That is why I got a TC.

It would beat the base TC in a race but is it worth it?

thank you, this is exactly what i've been getting at. this is why i want a tC and not an RX-8.

step #1.) fold down the seats, and show them the "social-space" that you've just created.
step #2.) tell them that there are other uses for your tc other than driving.
step #3.) wink.
you can't get that in an all-out drifter anyday if i had to choose between the thrill of drifting, and the thrill of extra-curricular activities in the car, id choose the latter. better memories, safer for the car (in terms of EXTERIOR body damage $$), safer on the engine (it's usually off for this matter), no gas needed, don't need modifications to the tc, and you get a free workout.

EDIT: ok one modification that would probably be swell (ive done this to my ES300):Rear Center Seatbelt Delete

I can describe your friends in 2 words--Hate & Ers.

Good job getting what YOU wanted and not what your so-called friends wanted. While your friends are watching "drift" DVDs, you'll be "entertaining" a hottie in your tC!

Down with Haters!!

My ex-gf didn't like it when I first showed her pix of one because it had "no ___", but there's a reason she's an ex. Most people don't even know what the tC is. When I mention Scion, they immediately assume I have the Box. Almost everyone agrees the car looks sweet when they see it in person. A girl asked me the other day if it was a hybrid car (like a Prius or something). Talk about insulting...ugh.

For the money dude you can't beat this car with a stick. All the standard options it comes with, compared to the other cars price and the same options.........not even close. And this thing is plenty quick....and i get a lot of compliments on mine.

You're better off buying a car that they won't want to drive...that way, they won't be drifting in your car and wearing out the tires. You've made a wise choice.

People tried to persuade me, until they understood that I wasn't buying "one of those ugly boxy cars" but infact a rather fancy looking 2 door coupe. Then they were all for the idea.

2 words. Gas milage. Assuming you are not rich, this is a major issue with rotary ingines, that torqueless montor i beleive sucks down 18mpg. Its pretty fun to drive, but for the practical user who does not race every weekend at the track, i'd say the tC will be much more satisfying. Eventhough they are beginning to fill up the road a bit more, my unmoded tC still gets a rediculous amount of looks and the occasional teen sarung inside while parked.

I usually just show people what other cars I could've gotten for 15k and they usually just clam up.

No other car in the price range could have gotten me the raised eyebrow " Y Helo Thar" look that I have gotten from owners of

1) BMWs
2) Benzes - Including a CLS
3) Audi
4) Yes, Even a Bentley GT

along with assorted other cars

For the price, there is just NOTHING that comes close to what you get with a tC

Yeah my last car was a Nissan 240sx, so I am def used to the whole rear wheel drive feel (I still prefer it but, whatever).

My next car was going to be a mid 90's Nissan 300zx but with premium gas prices at 3.60 by me and 20 mpg and insurance and really bad availability, it was not feasible.

My friends wanted me to get the Z or a Mazda 3, probably because the 3 is a sedan. They shut up after seeing the tC rear seats recline.

I will still get a 300zx some day but for now the tC is an awesome car!!!
