Default Stock Mid-pipe Resonator

Has anyone replaced the stock resonator? Is the stock resonator just a piece of pipe or does it really baffle the sound? I am trying to cut down on the sound from my exhaust and header and was thinking of replacing it.

I've heard a couple things like theres a charcoal filter in there, and that it does reduce noise. I have seen someone take it off, and put a pvc cap over the opening.

I replaced the stock second cat and resonator! End result my car with a header sounds better than most systems I have heard and my gas MPG sky rocketed...look below for my domain.

The same as well, I dont have the 2nd cat and I put on a shorter resonator and it sounds deep for a 4. The stock reso. is not that restricitve though imo.
