I had my first oil change done at the Toyota dealership after 4800 miles. How long should I go between oil changes?

I have used the search function but am not getting any results. (the website creator really needs to make an option that allows for you to search the titles, and not the body. Otherwise 'oil change' brings up thousands of results.)

Your manual says 5000 miles.

I stay between 3000 and 4000. Just to be on the safe side.

I did the very first at 2980, I'm sticking to the manual at 5000, but i regulary check the oil, im used to telling how dark it should be. but i'll switch to Mobil1 15,000 after my next two free changes from the dealer.

I have 400 miles on my car.
I plan to do a oil change at 800 miles, which i will call the end of my "break in period"....

Changed my oil at 5000 miles with AMSOIL fully synthetic 5w30 and an AMSOIL high flow oil filter.

Won't need to change it for another 7500 miles after that, just to be safe, I'm going to do an oil analysis at 4500 miles to check the contents of my oil just to make sure everything's ok.

Why wouldn't you wait until after 1000? The full break in period described in the manual?

While Amzoil can certainly be expected to go 7500 miles before changing, one should carefully consider the warranty. It clearly states 5000 miles or 6 months for maximum time/mileage between oil changes. After the warranty period Toyota no longer cares. If, in the unlikely event you have an internal engine problem, some indication of service will be required for Toyota to fix it under warranty. 7500 miles would probably be siezed upon immediately to avoid warranty repairs.

My wife and I have put nearly 900,000 miles on a variety of cars, and have never had an oil related problem. Just sold a Previa with 208,000, and the engine was running like a clock. Oil and filter changes every 5000 miles.

Im only at 156 miles so far.

My first oil change will be at 1000.

From then on, every 3500-4000 or 4 months.

Any extra $20-$50 per year in oil changes is really cheap insurance IMO.

Wrong. Dealers only use synthetic if you request and pay extra. Otherwise, most dealers buy dino oil in bulk from low bidders. This oil is usually name brand but hardly premium stuff. The only exceptions would be those, such as Porshe, Corvette, or MB requiring this oil from the factory.

Just make sure you go no longer than what Scion recommends cause like someone said if you have a problem they will use that to avoid paying for the repair. Hot weather, dirt roads, and lots of short drives then you need to change it sooner.

I wonder why Scion says 5000 miles, and it's on regular oil. :eyebrow:

there's no need to spend so much money. unless you have a turbo or a supercharger.

oil changes depend on alot of variables, driving habits, climate, maintenance, type of gasoline used are just a few, 3-5k is just a guide, pull out the stick and take a look at it yourself, if its golden brown its clean but if its black thats no good, regardless of what the mileage is... :no: :no: :no:

Dino oil has gotten much better over the years, which is why a lot of manufacturers recommend 5000-mile intervals even with nonsynthetics.

But personally, I don't like the idea of going that long on nonsynthetic oil, especially during break-in. I did my first oil change at around 300 miles, second at 1000, third at 3000. At 5000 miles I'm going to switch to synthetic, then maintain Scion's recommended 5000-mile interval.

I'm going to make it very clear to my dealer that they are never to touch my oil drain plug or filler cap on the rare occasions I bring the car to them for anything. I'm even considering cutting them out entirely -- I've got a mechanic I trust who can do the recommended maintenance that I can't tackle myself.

does that mean if you were to have an engine related problem (and hopefully you never will!) that you won't be covered under warranty? i know scion says oil changes every 5K miles. i wonder if an owner goes 5,080 (for instance) between oil changes if that voids the warranty. i'm thinking it would...
