Default "people buy a scion to drive fast" (i hit a cat)

im driving down the street to my girlfriends house and this cat just happens to come running across the street, i see it as im driving past it, its not really running fast but like a jog, so i keep on going hoping it stops and i hear a clunk, and i look in my rear view mirror and see it laying in the middle of the street.
this happened about two houses down from my girlfriends house who i go see and park my car there usually every weekend overnight too. i see the owner come out and i bust a u turn and come back and tell her im sorry and blah blah. I felt so bad that i volunteered to follow them to the animal emergency clinic just because i felt guilty (i regret it now).
so today ( a week later) i get a phone call and my girls dad calls and says she dropped off a bill. ok so i call that lady up and see what the deal is and she goes on to accuse my of speeding down the street and not doing anything to avoid hitting her cat and wants me to take care of the bill. rightt...so we talk and i had already explained my case to her last time and it ends up in a big arguement, when she demands i pay and wants to take it to court.
Then finally before she hangs up she says, "You drive a scion. Toyota makes Scions. People who buy a Scion buy it to drive fast!" Damn i wish my car was as fast as she described it as. just something dumb i heard today.
btw. i wasnt speeding, i actually was watching my speed because i was getting low on gas

Just thought i'd share and vent and this is actually my first thread started too and its long. hope nothing happens to my car next time i go visit near there.

Poor kitty! Did it survive?

Dang those crazy cat ladies. I think she's taking out the pain on someone else, i.e. the person who caused it (I'm not blaming you, just saying). Hope you get it all sorted out, perhaps she'll be more reasonable once she's cooled down?

If that doesn't work, go pick up a kitten from a shelter or something like that and give it to her and try to make amends.

I hear ya. Where in the world did she come up with "people who buy a scion buy it to drive fast"?! That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard. People buy racecars to drive fast. People buy scions because they're a great value. Hope it works out for you.

Speaking from personal experience you have no legal responsibility for paying the vet bill(as of California law). If anything, if you would have gotten into an accident because of the cat, the owner would have been liable. It is the responsibility of the owner of the pet to make sure it stays out of the road. I am not sure how it is out there in Texas but here in Cali if you hit a cat and don't stop, although very A-holish, it is not illegal. If you hit a dog on the otherhand you are required by law to stop and report it. Tell this lady to go pound salt, you have already appologized for injuring her animal. The fact is it shouldn't have been out in the street and you cannot be liable for such an incident. If she wants to go to court than fine, the judge will laugh her out of the courtroom. If you have any questions about the legality of this issue, contact your counties animal control office and they will set you straight.

Yeah, tell the lady that her cat scratched your scion, and you will be sending her a bill!

I Oregon, cats are considered wild animals, and are not licenced..........

Though its sad you hit a cat, it was not your fault......

Bad situation all the way around, but next time just slow down if you see an animal running in your direction. Don't just hope it will stop. Would you have done the same if it was a deer?

You may not be laughing, but I just fell out of my chair, in the best laugh I've had all month. . . it ultimately sucks for the animal, but I'm glad the owners are in pain. It is the responsibility of the owner to look after the less intelligent animal.

What do they expect? So many people are KILLED avoiding animals and hitting trees. . . and don't even raise the whole animal rights bull poopie. As a pet owner/adopter, you've taken responsibility to look after it. . . and a road full of 1 ton behemouths moving at 25mph + (which I'm sure could kill people as well) is not a place for animals.

Even children. . . I hate those stupid "caution, children at play" signs. IDIOTIC. Children should not be in the street, plain and simple. And if you don't supervise your kids, then it's your fault. And if you can't supervise your kids, maybe you shouldn't have any. It's so dumb. . . hmmm. . . what wins, a child or a car. Sure, you can sue and cry and jail, but the dead are dead. . . cars can be replaced.

So to end my rant, I'm just saying that those who value something, wouldn't let it roam the streets, be it human or animal. You wouldn't leave $20 on the street, would you?

yeah not to sound mean, but these cat owners ____ me off.. they think they can let their cat go anywhere "because it's a free spirit".. and let the cat do anything they want.. and whenever the cat does something it's always someone else's fault.. NOT the owner? whatever..

the other statements are correct (about the law) in that the owner should have had control over the animal.. (leash).. what a wacked out woman.. i'd stay away from her, and keep an eye on your car when you go over to that neighborhood! crazy cat people.. send you a bill for a dead cat.. hilarious..

hey i'm not without a heart for animals.. it was a cat, doing something an animal would do.. big problem here is the messed up owner.. maybe next time she won't let her cat roam free?

Poor kitty. RIP. But I am laughing at the cat owner. I bet she breeds cats and doesn't give a rats ___ about them. Leaving her front door open so the other cat can run around outside. LOL. I That shows she loves her cats.

I remember the last dog I hit, the first thought that crossed my mind was, "The dirtbag better not have messed up my car." Blood and hair in the license plate screws was about the worst of it. Next time, try to take it square on, like the front plate is a target. Better to get it over quick than leave 'em limping.

Find a stray cat and give it to her...sometimes people give away cats. Maybe look in the paper or go to the cat pound. Do they have cat pounds? I dunno...That way even if she doesn't take it, you did something.

But like everyone has said, you don't have to do anything. Anytime people let an animal outside without supervision it should be a fenced area.

Honestly I don't really like cats, maybe it's because I am allergic to some. If it was a dog on the other hand, I would feel badly. I hit a cat once going 55 and it did like 5 back-flips. It was kind of a rural area. At first I felt a little bad but then I started laughing...

that sucks that you hit the cat...personally, if you hit my cat, i'd have to hurt you but sucks for her to lose her cat like that...anyways..

i don't know if this is still true or not because i heard this a couple years ago....if you hit/run over and kill a dog, its illegal and you could get arrested for it, but if you hit/run over and kill a cat, nothing happens

I think the deal with cats is that finding the owner can be near impossible. Most never have collars, and many are strays. Furthermore, most cat owners get cats because they are easy to take care of (meaning they let them out and about and make it everyone ELSE's responsibility to clean their poop and not hit them with their cars). Dogs are seldom let out, and if unleashed, liability shouldn't be on your hands. . . but finding the owner shouldn't be too hard since 90% of dogs I run into have TAGS. Everytime I've found a stray dog, I've been able to locate/contact the owner. . . dunno how this chip thing is supposed to work though.
