Default Why do people name their ride??

I’ve seen quite a few people name their cars. Maybe it’s just me, but this strikes me as being odd. I mean, I’ve seen (in movies) people naming inanimate objects, but these people were loony……”And this is my vase, Shirley, we go everywhere together”. “How about my pal Bob, he’s a telephone pole!” Living creatures have names and depending on how far up the evolutionary ladder, can respond to their name on their own free will. Not a motor, brake pads, spark plugs, a blender or even a block of wood.

Is there an explanation for this type of behavior? Is there a medical term used for people who name all of their belongings?

but these people were loony……
Ahhhhhhhhhh, never mind.

Why do a large group of men try to name there private parts? It just seems to be human nature. Even you probably name some things with out thinking of it. Do you say "this is my car" or "this is my xB" for instance? You just named your car, even though its a name already applied, you used it. Do you say "This is my gaming system" or "This is my X Box"? There you go naming things again As for why ppl give a human styled name to a car, thats hard saying. Friends have named my ride Sex Box, but thats not going down

I think it's a bit odd myself . And having said that most of my cars have had names! Although most people use female name, which I really never get. Mine have been: '73 Mustang==Harvey, '77 VW Dasher==Fritz Von Dahser, '85 Renault Encore==Kyle, '95 Chev Cavalier==no name, never felt a real connection to the car and finally my '05 xB==Kazuki, means 1st of a new genereation. Oh well, guess I'm more messed up than I want to admit

it seems to be in our nature to anthropomorphize everything we can, to the degree that we can. a rock cannot be anthropomorphized very much, because it lacks any traits that we see in ourselves (unless it is unique or has a history, like the hope diamond). a pet does seem to have traits that we share, so we project further onto them things that we can't see, such as complex emotions and whatnot. a car, although inanimate and non unique, still gets anthropomorphized because they do behave in ways that become more and more unique as the car ages. blah, blah, blah.....

my box is named Kallisti

Personification of an inanimate object leads to emotional attachment which in turn leads to emotional detachment anxiety and indirect transference of responsibility.

"Bullet was going too fast so I got a ticket"
"If only drifter had stopped in time, we wouldn't have crashed"

I think its perfectly fine to name a car. My TC is named Chim Chim and my 89 BMW is named Tobias. It just gives it more personality instead of saying the car.

"Bullet was going too fast so I got a ticket"
"If only drifter had stopped in time, we wouldn't have crashed"
Is this a comment or a signature?
Anyway if it is a sig.... I think it reminds me of mine
I am going to name my car after reading this post.... Give me a couple of days to think about it, come up with something? I had a pet Pythoon snake, for about a year and a half, NEVER NAMED IT?

I don't know where that's from, we probably don't have the same background and probably wouldn't get along more than a minute at a meet?
(respond if you want?)

ABOUT THE POST..........
It just seems to be human nature
I suppose, but only with items you like that with extended or names that don't roll off the tounge well. I call my xbox, an xbox. I call my scion a Toyota just so I don't have to explain to jouchers..... (don't know how gougch is spelled sorry, whateva)[/quote]

Why are you "Scallywagger"? You could use your given name.

People name their cars as an identifier. It could be a nickname, to call out a characteristic, to remind them of a person or event.

People ask me about my License Plate, "UBOW" all the time. It means, Ultimate Box On Wheels. It's more than a name... it's a statement.

I agree, its personal preference and a way to further personalize your connection to your car. All cars have names anyway to distinguish them one from another, I guess owners giving them names does that to a further extent. All I know is me and XBizzle will ride until the wheels fall off.

My wife has named my car Christine because of the problem I have with the doors always locking themselves. I thought it was fitting and then remembered the whole obsession with the car thing from the movie and realized it was kinda eerie... Only difference I guess is that my car hasn't de-geekified me... And i don't listen to oldies.
