Damn, When I forst saw this topic I thought it was about autoXing not Offroad Rallying LOL. I autocross mine and have fun doing it. Would never do this sort of thing with an almost new vehicle though. Not even when it gets to be 10 years old. Don't really think they were made or built to take that kind of abuse. IMO
The pics do look cool. It's funny to see the different ways people come up with to have fun with their BOXES. Rock On Bro!!!

I thought about doing this but decided autocross was more suited for me. I might eventually, when i get tired of autocross.

Thats the cool thing about rally, you don't need much power to win. You just need to have the right gearing, and lots of experience. Having 600whp is pointless in dirt and gravel.

Do you do this for fun or comp.? Whered you go to do it?

I'm pretty sure we don't have anything in the states for rally competition. If we did that would definitely be killer. But unlike a lot of countries, it seems most americans don't use their mods/stock cars like they are made for. I.E: Buying a 12psi turbo for a rsx-s and never driving it on any track, just for looks. A.I.E: hummers. Off road? I rarely ever see a hummer with dirt. Its great people take care of their cars, but if a car is made for something, i think you should drive it that way. (In safe conditions obviously.)

I saw something about bB's being in some rally circuit. The AWD models. Its not too hard to believe. It wasn't a professional level, but like amature level. Pretty interesting. The xb with some mods can definitely be a rally machine.

Your lights is a start. If you wanted to go all out. header, take off the exhaust for when you do it, buy a roll cage and 4 point harness, short shifter (if 5sp), shift kit (if auto), and then a few other ins and odds and you'll be ready to go.

Thats just my view of doing it. Theres tons of ways. But roll cage, harness would definitely be a must if you were really wanting to do it a lot..

Well, the exhaust has had some work done on it allready, not much, no muffler. Ive seen pics of a roll cage in a xB, and the idea is forming, just need to get the welder back and buy the tubing. The 4 point harness, dang your thinkin like me, Ive looked at seat, decisions, but need the money. I have a automatic, and havent thought about a shift kit, time to go look. I like your way of thinking.

Good call. Rally is really good for top end, if you ever wanted to go forced induction turbo would be the best way to go. But of course, you don't have to go that route. Just another suggestion to through at you! :P

Its good to see your on the right page when it comes to this stuff. A lot of people think you can just go out and do it. Coilovers would be great as well, not dropping it too low but stiff spring rates i would imagine would help a lot regardless of traction in turns. I'm assuming your lights are functional? If not, better wire them up!! heh.

I saw your exhaust tip, at first i was like "oh man, that is one sad looking exhaust" But then i saw you were actually doing this so it makes up for it. No need to be fancy because the rocks kicked up definitely has the exhaust taken a beaten. Running no axle back at all would be cool as long as you don't go f/i. Its been proven you lose a lot of low end but gain a good amount on high end back..HP numbers, no TQ numbers. So now thinking about it further, keep the exhaust.

I also have an auto!! People that say autos can't have fun are so wrong. (no offense to those who think that way) I can definitely have fun manually shifting on autocross. Infact, i beat a lot of manual times in my class. Sometimes beyond my class because they can't handle the turns. Either unexperienced, or trying to push it too hard and lose traction.

Turbo is the best ya to go when looking at forced induction,no h/p lose to belt driven superchargers, not for me.

Ive been looking around at a tein suspension system, havent looked heavly into it yet, hope they make a suspension system for the xB. I was looking a stiffer suspension, with a small lift to the car rather than drop, not sure yet, a small drop will increase the handling.

The light, all wired up, the farthest passange light is busted, rock hit it. got to replace it. $5 for the entire light assemb. aint bad. I even have 2 lights on the top of the xB in the rear, they work great, wired them in today.

I originally just took the muffler off, but the heat melted the carpet and the foam box in the back, now a fire extigusher is under the drivers seat. My dad and I made the new exhauxt from exhaust flex pipe, and a few pieces of straight exhaust pipe, making the flange to mate to the original end on the exhaust was fun. a few hangers. Sounds great, and turns alot of heads. As you said, no need to be pretty, cause you hear the rocks hitting it on the gravel roads all the time.

So you shift through the gears manually to on your auto, I do the same. I dont race alot though, most cars in my area are far faster, but the xB passes them in the turns. Ive gone up on a V8 jeep, he stomped me, but on 2 90 degree turns, i took at 40 mph, i stomped him there, and took the finish lead to the stop light. I have lots of fun with a auto, but it would suck to have a standard, i drive to and from houston every day, and it would get old after a bit. Ill post a pic of the exhaust after a bit.

home made exhaust, few leaks, but working on sealing them. Another thing i recently did was remove the rear seat. That seat is heavier than i thought.

for what ever reason it wont post the pic, it messes up the img, i guess. heres the link.

I only manually shift on tracks or just occasional weekend fun. Normally i just leave in drive and take it easy. I wouldn't raise the xb if i were you, although i can see why you would because of all the rocks hurting the paint. The best thing to do is drop about an inch. It will be enough to keep you steady yet not enough to cause damange when on dirt roads. If you went lower, nish designs i believe still has skid plates to protect lowered cars from curbs..plus they look cool. front, rear side and rear bumper ones. Check into it, you might be interested in buying them or recreating something along the lines of that if you are really good with those types of things.

But raising the xb you will definitely lose the tight cornering. And it will handle pretty bad on the rally tracks. IMO

Cya

rallying_the_scion

I think ill go with lowering it a inch, you seem to know what your talkin about. Ive allready looked into making a skid plate for the from out of a somthing like expanded metal, only better looking. I think i can tackle it, since i built the exhaust and the brushguard, and tail light guards. We'll see over time.

Wash her!!! Thats the only reason why i can't rally right now, i have to keep her clean. heh

As for the skid plates. 1. Look underneath the front bumper, you will notice that theres 6-8 screws holding that black plastic piece that helps keep dirt and stuff off the motor. Thats where the skid plates should be installed. 2. As for cutting, cut them to match the body lines and body flow of the lip and bumper. But as far as how much they stick out, thats up to you. 1''-1 1/2'' sticking out looks pretty sick.

Good luck!

I did the same ram-air idea as you did, only mine is located at the fog light area, my fog light covers are off my car. nice work!!!

Thanks! I am also very impressed (and inspired) by your awesome work on your rally ready xB, but have a few questions about the skid plate…

It's able to support the weight of the front of the xB?! That's fantastic!
What did you make your skid plate out of?
Mine is built from industrial grade 2/8" thick, hardened, diamond tread aluminum.

Can you please tell me where you mounted the front skid plate?
I have looked for a suitable mounting location, but there is only 2 bolt holes under the radiator support and the plastic mounting straps behind the front ground effects and a plastic splash shield that surrounds the lower engine area. Do you have any photos of how it is built and attached?

They are "wade" brand in-channel window vents. I also have the Wade OEM style bolt-on bug shield. Both are very good products and are not effected by wind, vibration, high-speed, or the car-wash. I've had the window vents for over a year and they work great!

DANG, youve done your research ,lol.

My skid plate is made of 1/16 stainless steel, VERY HARD to work with. I attached mine to the 2 bolts holding the platic straps to the ground effects. I also, sounds bad, but works great, attached it to the tranny. ill take some pics later today and post them or email them to you. i can slowly drive the xB on the the plate, but driving force, well, the plate has been knocked back a bit, ive smacked it hard several times, hasnt moved much anymore.

Thanks for the info on the window vents. It looked like u had a bug guard, but couldnt tell for sure.

Where did you get the other pic of the roll cage, i would like to get more if i could. The one i build should be similar to it. I just got a job at a local auto shop, so now ill have some income to buy the tubing for a static roll cage, nothing serious.

Ill send you a email about the pics.

Thanks. I have been modifying vehicles ever since my first car. The metal, purchased from a local industrial metal supply distributor, is hardened diamond tread aluminum and is easy to work with. It can be cut with a saws-all, but is strong enough to support a lot of weight. The hardened aluminum doesn’t bend, it flexes to the point of breaking, then shears off in chunks. It's very solid and does not have a tinny sound.
My real world tests have proven it to support the front weight of my old Subaru (about 1000 lbs) and to survive an impact with small log in the road at 45 Mph.

To date I have made "Rally" version of my cars as:

SubaDoo : My rally-ready 92 Subaru Loyale
Complete with- 2 tone paint job, push bar, fog lights, rock slider bars, and skid plates...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/rallyxb/SubaDoo1b.jpg

All-Road Quest : My 96 off-road Nissan minivan
Complete with- bug shield, painted bumpers, push bar, fog lights, sub frame connectors, uniframe braces, a-arm rock deflectors, and skid plates...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/rallyxb/Quest1.jpg

Now it's time for the xB!

It was really funny to see how easily it kept up with the bulky, cumbersome 4WD vehicles on all the back roads. It's amazing what kind of traction (and awesome drifting) you can get from a minivan with good set of snow tires on dirt and gravel roads.
It was a lot of fun.

Do you have something against vehicles that are already built for this purpose and have AWD and will do a much better job of off-roading and rough roading than a street car with some silly mods?

Just curious because you know you are destroying the resale value of your cars. It takes more than a skidplate and a brushbar to make something off-road/rough road ready. The rest of the car, suspension etc are not built to withstand the abuse and without AWD it's kind of useless.

You strike me as a guy in desperate need of a Subaru.

Drop all those silly projects and just get yourself a nice Forester. It will do 10x better as a "rally car" than anything you can cobble together out of a Japanese city car because Subaru knows rally racing and they engineer their cars for that from the ground up. You'll get a full warranty and the piece of mind of knowing you can take rough roads at 45 mph bouncing over mudholes and your car will not get stuck and it won't fall apart after 2 years. Any xB subjected to the kind of use a Forester is DESIGNED for will be ready for the scraphead in a couple of years. No amount of tacked on skidplates and foglight laden brushbars will change that.

I would take the cobbled together Pioneer xB over the "Rally xB" any day. I looked at the links form the o.p. and man does that work look like crap. You have done absolutely nothing to the xB that makes it any more "off road" worthy. A couple of skid plates and a half-@55ed brush guard won't save your suspension in chassis.

At least the box from Pioneer has a complete Bronco chassis underneath and a 289 under the hood to move it. I have no doubt, if the owner ever decides to get the thing finished the right way, it will be one sweet machine. But even in the condition it is currently in it completely dominates the "Rally xB."

Biznox

If you want to rally at all, get a Subaru.

ive always been into rally. kinda sad i didnt get a subaru..but what can you do?
well..i was in a service crew for Joanna Balsamo at Rim of the World Rally in lancaster. I met a whole lot of awesome people.

and that "you need a subaru to rally" requirement is dumb. People rally 2wd ALL the time, competitively..they have 2 classes for competition Group 2 (lower hp cars limited to a certain displacement) and Group 5 (unlimitied crazy cars).
Best 2wd driver i met...Matt Johnston http://www.mattjohnstonrally.com/

From there on teh brush guard will be permantly removed...sold or sit to rot.....This summer may be her last summer in my hand as i try for a new tC....Rally tC.... which will be a muc cleaner set up of performance on the street rather than the back roads.
