Default 06 tC Aftermarket Foglight Install

I just installed some PIAA 1400 foglights on my tC today and I am pleased with the results. They weren't exactly ultra-easy to install.

I was quite wary of installing aftermarket fogs since there aren't many places to install them. However, with Scion wanting over $350 for easier-to-install OEM foglights, I figured I could get a better product from PIAA for much less. I got the 1400's for about $169 on sale and the installation took about four hours.

Here's the basics for the installation that I used:

Remove the black plastic under-bumper stuff. This part is simple. There's 4-5 screws (phillips head) and about 8-10 retainer clips. Bear in mind, if you don't have enough clearance with a screwdriver (which I didn't, until I found my easy-lift), the screws have a 10mm socket head on them as well (go find your metric socket set!). The retainer clips are MUCH sturdier than the ones on my Tacoma, and you can coax them out with a flat-head screwdriver. Stick the screwdriver in the slot and wiggle it. The clips break free very easily.

Once all the black stuff underneath is off, you'll notice that your bumper is pretty loose. There's not much left to get it off. First, remove the screw from the inside of the front wheelwells. Don't take off the whole wheelwell plastic - it's a lot of work. Remove the screw closest to the front of the car, and you may want to remove the retainer clip just about 8-10" above it on the wheelwell. Now, pry back the wheelwell from the bumper and you'll notice a screw pointing upwards that connects your front bumper to the front quarter panel (the panel behind the headlights). Remove that screw on either side.

Now, pop the hood and remove the 5 retaining clips that are on the front of the hood. There's 2 near each headlight (don't remove the headlight screws!) and one right in the middle between the lights.

Here's the tricky part - get under your car (might need the lift) and look for a black piece about as big as a chalkboard eraser under your headlight. Lift your bumper off the clip there on either side and your bumper is free.

From there, I drilled a small hole at the top of both of the black inserts in the outer pockets. I wanted to keep the inserts there after the install, so I needed a way to feed the wires through. Measure (carefully!) and drill two holes in the top of both pockets to mount your lights. I drilled my holes in the top so that if I ever wanted different lights, the holes wouldn't show much later.

Mount the lights using something sturdy, like bolts and locking washers. You don't want those bad boys coming loose at 70 MPH - trust me, been there done that. Re-mount the bumper back on the car and hook up your wiring.

My PIAA set came with a relay and switch (thanks PIAA!). Connect the two harnesses to the lights . Now, the relay needs a "hot" power source to know when it's allowed to power on the lights. Here's where you get to decide where you want to connect it.
Next, splice the "hot" wire from your relay to the "hot" wire of your high beam, low beam or parking light wire. Keep in mind, the white wire with the black stripe is a GROUND and will not signal the relay to come on (been there done that). The colored wire (green on mine) is the one that carries power.

After that, route your wires for your switch through the rubber housing around the steering column. I highly recommend AGAINST cutting the rubber. There are three clips (go inside your car, remove the black cover around your steering column near your brake pedal and you'll see these) and you can push a couple of them out and have a friend pass the wires through. Find a friend with a skinny but long arm - it helps. Where the wires make contact with the edges, wrap them in electrical tape (multiple layers) or use some other type of sheath. If you don't, the metal around the rubber housing will eventually cut into your wires and short out your lights. Pop the clips back in (again, utilize your long-and-skinny-armed friend to push the housing back on) and you're set.

Now, connect the white lead from the relay to the positive (+) battery terminal and connect the black lead to your negative (-) battery terminal. Click on your parking lamps, high/low beam (depending on what you used previously) and turn on your foglights. If light appears, scream "EUREKA" and consume a beer (give one to your skinny-armed friend as well). If no light appears, check over your wiring.

Put all the black under-bumper stuff back on and align your lights. If your skinny armed friend is around, and it is night time, roll around and enjoy your new lights.
