Default rev noise- not sure what it is

There have been a few times that I was driving slowly and wound out the gears and shifted slowly or didnt even shift at all (meaning i took my foot off the gas about 1g away from redline). I was listening to the engine but I had no clue that I would hear a very nasty sound. Im not sure how to describe it but it sounded like a metal sound. Any way you look at it - it didnt sound good and sounded like I was about to get hit with a big issue but the sound just went away. I drive my car hard sometimes but take care of it with oil changes and keeping the engine bay and other parts running clean. I am well aware that this is a very unclear question but does anybody that knows cars a hell of a lot more then i do throw possible problems out at me? I want to know the good, the bad, and the ugly...well just the bad and the ugly. Anyway, like I said, you can not hear the sound anymore and it was only when the gear was winding down w/o throttle. any help will be of help.

to have more help, you'll have to describe in more detail this "nasty sound".. that would help us..

but it sounds like redlining the car a lot isn't really being nice to the engine.. sure it's toyota reliability.. but just my opinion..

you CANT just drive your car hard, and expect it to magically fix itself, or be ok just by providing it with oil changes. If your going to drive your car hard, you need to expect the unexpected; expect the unfortunate. From what it sounds like, your valve are probably knocking, or your main bearing is rubbing against the housing. Did you check your oil for metal shavings? You should invest in a engine stethascope. goodluck

well i drive it hard but I didnt mean that i abuse or constantly reline it - im asking this question because it wouldnt be a smart move putting a turbo on this incase it is something like you said - that way toyota can fix it for free and not blame it on the aftermarker product.

im trying to remember what it sounds like because it "just went away" --- I do tech support for a bank so I remember lots of details but this one is foggy in my head. I do know that I could not reproduce it after my oil change. That does not mean that it went away after the oil change but a week before I got it, i heard the noise. Secondly, I noticed it once when I was in a parking lot, put it in first and reved to 4,500ish - then took my foot off the gas because a stop sign was 20feet from me. This is when I heard a metal sounding sound. It was a very disturbing sound ..... one that im glad that I do not hear any more. (i am in a rush to get back out of my house so sorry about the fragged sentences) I only have 13k miles on my car. If you ask more questions I can prob give more answers. I will be back tonight. thank you

it's probably just the engine revving down, causing something like the heatshield on the exhaust manifold to rattle.

I tried to make it happen today - no luck (which is a good thing) -- I am going to try testing it out again in a few weeks. Does this sound legit...??..... that maybe I hit a pothole (which has happened a few times) and it bent a shield up (i dont even know if there is one but im just wondering) and and high first gear engine rev cause it to rattle???

well, you have the most engine braking in 1st, so there's more of an opportunity for the right frequency to rattle whatever's rattling.

since i dont hear anything I am feeling a lot better atm but i just wanted to get some feedback on the issue. A new engine like this is very unlikely to have problems with13k miles--- thats why I started this post ...to get some further input.

lol, this same thing happened to me like 2 months ago. I went trhough some water pretty hard and the next day everytime i would take off, downshift, or just sit at idle i would hear a rattle. took it to the dealer and turned out to be the damn sheild on the CAT was just bent up and was making a little noise. i dont know if its the same with you, but it couldnt hurt to try.

was it a metal sounds rattle? I did get an oil change via the dealer so I am wondering if someone bent it back to the way it should be .....meaning....thats why I do not hear the noise anymore. I am takin a guess because if I had engine problems the noise wouldnt go away...it would start off slight and get worse. This just made a nasty sound out of nowhere then went away out of nowhere. odd.

I am guessing you are refferring to one of the mains??? If he spun a main bearing he would be having MUCH worse issues. I am betting it is one of the ideas mentioned above.
