All I can say is that I hope that they have worked most of the first year bugs out. From the drawing board to showroom, they got the tC to market very quickly, and I think it showed.
Given how much of the major components are shared with other Toyota's I wouldn't worry too much.

Uhhhh the tC is domestic only...imported from japan
CR is a joke. Every problem is counted the same.
If you look in their annual auto issue they do break it down by categories. Anyways shouldn't a new car not have any problems? Be it a blown engine or a rattling hatch neither should happen to a car that is a year old. Either way in order to get it fixed you are without the car.
Hey, at least if I blew the engine I bet the dealer would fix it with one visit instead of the three and counting for the various rattles and noises.

Believe me, I know how hard it is for them to fix the rattles......
I understand what your saying, but a problem is a problem. You want a car with fewer of them. Then you can look in back of the auto issue to get a better idea of what those problems are. I know all the info is in the form of shaded circles - it's an imperfect system, but it's the best there is. It's not the bible, but it's a pretty damned good predictor.
Now I haven't seen the specific breakdown on the tC, but I would venture a guess that most of them are related to rattles in the dash, sunroof, hatch...all the common issues we know so well.
None of these things should be happening, minor problems or not.
I think the mechanicals will be fine in the long run (look at how CR rates the Camry), but I am anxious to see what the interior looks/sounds like in 60K miles.

Yes, the tC IS reliable!
7000+ miles on my 05 FM tC, and not a thing has gone wrong with it. Even the worst potholed streets in SF had no effect on the car's body integrity. The car always starts and the engine happily zings to the upper RPM ranges whenever I decide to gas it. And that happens almost every morning when I have to squirt through the worst commute time traffic around downtown SF.
If you ever want to see and feel the dark side of reliability, you can find it in your nearest VW dealership. I know, cause I suffered through years owning what has to be one of the most unreliable cars (VW Passat) I have ever driven. You guys don't know how good you have it with the tC if you have never owned a late model VW. VWs are so bad that it's considered almost "normal" with VW owners to drive around with ABS and CEL lights constantly flashing on at you and stranding you on the road at least twice a year. NOW THAT'S UNRELIABLE!

Yes, its reliable, mine has 41K miles and the only thing that I can think off that bothers me a bit is the rear hatch rattle, but with the radio on, its all forgotten.
