You've got to consider that there are 7 things they look at for "reliability". An engine going out will count the same as a floormat wearing out...

All I can say is that I hope that they have worked most of the first year bugs out. From the drawing board to showroom, they got the tC to market very quickly, and I think it showed.

Given how much of the major components are shared with other Toyota's I wouldn't worry too much.

Not to sound like an ****, but all you need to know is what's stated in the paragraph that starts, "Japanese Imports...". I've had minor issues (Wind deflector recall and Hatch rattle) but nothing serious. The tC is actually pictured on the Consumer Reports 2006 Buyers Guide. One of the important reasons why I bought a tC was that it was built by Toyota. Peeps young and old have told me how reliable their Toyota is. So I decided to do the same (sort of) and get a Scion.

DUDE, ITS A TOYOTA. OF COURSE ITS GOING TO BE RELIABLE. IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS, CHANCES ARE ITS SOMETHING YOU DID. OR YOU DIDNT HAVE THE CLUCH IN FOR ENOUGH.

The ones with a messed up sluge filled engine. You never know when they try to push something a little too far and it doesnt work. Gotta take chances to be great but it doesnt always work. Ill just wait and see how it turns out a few years down the road.

I could of swore that the Scion Tc has been out in Japan for a few years now, like 9 or something. If this is correct, technically there should not be any first year bugs anymore.

CR is a joke. Every problem is counted the same.
If CR is a joke who isn't then? Who can you believe, Motor Trend or Car and Driver or one of the other magazines that will immediately have all their Toyota ads pulled if the say something that isn't glowing with praise? (like GM did with the LA Times....)

If you look in their annual auto issue they do break it down by categories. Anyways shouldn't a new car not have any problems? Be it a blown engine or a rattling hatch neither should happen to a car that is a year old. Either way in order to get it fixed you are without the car.

Hey, at least if I blew the engine I bet the dealer would fix it with one visit instead of the three and counting for the various rattles and noises.

Its a joke because they rate cars with problems per 100 cars. Every problem big, small, or dumb customer counts exactly the same. A blown engine, worn out floor mat or poor gas mileage all count as 1 problem. Some are serious and some are not therefore they shouldnt count equally. You should go ask a mechanic how hard it is to find a rattle. Mechanical problems are much easier to find and repair.

Believe me, I know how hard it is for them to fix the rattles......

I understand what your saying, but a problem is a problem. You want a car with fewer of them. Then you can look in back of the auto issue to get a better idea of what those problems are. I know all the info is in the form of shaded circles - it's an imperfect system, but it's the best there is. It's not the bible, but it's a pretty damned good predictor.

Now I haven't seen the specific breakdown on the tC, but I would venture a guess that most of them are related to rattles in the dash, sunroof, hatch...all the common issues we know so well.

None of these things should be happening, minor problems or not.

I think the mechanicals will be fine in the long run (look at how CR rates the Camry), but I am anxious to see what the interior looks/sounds like in 60K miles.

Yes, the tC IS reliable!
7000+ miles on my 05 FM tC, and not a thing has gone wrong with it. Even the worst potholed streets in SF had no effect on the car's body integrity. The car always starts and the engine happily zings to the upper RPM ranges whenever I decide to gas it. And that happens almost every morning when I have to squirt through the worst commute time traffic around downtown SF.
If you ever want to see and feel the dark side of reliability, you can find it in your nearest VW dealership. I know, cause I suffered through years owning what has to be one of the most unreliable cars (VW Passat) I have ever driven. You guys don't know how good you have it with the tC if you have never owned a late model VW. VWs are so bad that it's considered almost "normal" with VW owners to drive around with ABS and CEL lights constantly flashing on at you and stranding you on the road at least twice a year. NOW THAT'S UNRELIABLE!

Yes, its reliable, mine has 41K miles and the only thing that I can think off that bothers me a bit is the rear hatch rattle, but with the radio on, its all forgotten.
