Default xA RWD Conversion?

Hey I was just wondering if there's anyway to convert an xA from front wheel to rear wheel drive. I love to drift, and FWD just isnt cutting it in that department.

ANy Ideas, parts, or suggestions are more than welcome.

i have NOT heard of anyone that is crazy enough to change their xA into a RWD. Besides it being extremely costly i dont think anyone is willing to chop, cut and rebuild their Scion.

Well, a friend of mine whos really into mechanics, especially Scions, said that in Japan, the xA and xB have an optional AWD system,
and he said u can take the part for the rear and just swap it onto an xA, but he said its easier to do All wheel drive than rear wheel.

Do you have any idea how and where to get an AWD conversion kit? I'd be very interested, and yes, I know it would be a bit spendy.

And I thought it was only the bB that had the optional AWD, anyway...can anyone confirm or refute?

The ist (xA in Japan) does come in 4WD...but I doubt the rear wheel drive portion would power the car by itself very well, let alone make it a drift monster...

Just drop a hemi crate engine in the rear, along with a beefier rearend and some gald awful frame & suspension modes and some slicks and you'll be one bad ___ Pig! LOL

Thats rad!(the pic)

I was thinking of looking in to the AWD system from Japan. I know it will be alot of green but worth it IMO. I just dont know if the trans will match up.

My understanding is the AWD or all IST's are 3 on the tree auto's. I just dont know if the AWD system will bolt to the manual trans or even if there is room to put the plumming for the system on the xA. I am very far from doing this but its in the back of my mind.

The AWD and the transmission are one in the same. meaning

You have three transmission choices for xA/xB. 4 speed auto (US/Japan) 5 speed manual ( US) automatic AWD ( Japan) which is i believe a 4 speed .

Yup you bought the wrong car for drifting. You could have spent like less than half the amount a new xA costs and gotten a better and faster drifter. When I say faster, I mean A LOT faster.

As I'm sure some of the gear heads here already know, the engine isn't mounted correctly for RWD. No such thing as a AWD kit, you just have to buy the entire AWD drivetrain, including tranny. FWD are transverse mounted, whereas RWD is longitudinal. So you'll also need a longitudinal mount tranny too to go along with your motor. All in all, the job will probably cost at least as much as your xA.

My suggestion? Buy a rolling shell/chasis, either an AE86 or a s13, buy an turbo engine, and put it in. That's like $1000 max for the rolling shell, probably more like $500, and anywhere from $2000-$3000 for an engine, cheaper if you go the AE86 route. So that's about $4000 for a drift car that will always be faster than our xAs.

The best thing to do, is like some other have said. Get the rear end from the AWD xA. Now the part you dont want to hear, you will have to convert over to the AWD auto trans, seeing thats what the AWD Ist uses.. Then find a way to get the center diff to transfer power to the rear wheels all the time, & take out the front half shafts.. It would be a lot of work + added weight + you would still only have 105 or so hp.. For the cost of doing that, you could probably find a good used FC RX-7.

I'm just thinking it would be LOTS cheaper to do a complete drivetrain transplant with a custom rear axle, bigger (or just more powerful) engine, and a RWD transmission (probably from a truck or something).

I would bet that it would still be cheaper and more certain than importing all those parts from Japan.

Good luck and post pics if you go for it!
