Well today was the first snow of winter and also my first accident. I can't believe it. I survived 7 years of Wisconsin winters, but couldn't make it through one day of snow in Ohio.

That rubber on the tC sure is slick. I hate to make excuses, but like I said, I have some experience with bad winter weather and haven't had an accident until today.

Anyway, I was riding down the highway maybe 40mph when I realized the overpasses had become icy. I did my best to drive safe, but of course as I was driving over one overpass the cars in front of me began to slow down. I tapped the breaks and immediately the ABS kicked in. I realized it wasn't going to help so I looked for an exit. The best route I could see in the 3 seconds I had to work with was between the car in front of me and the semi in the next lane. Unforturnately, I didn't have enough control to stay in the narrow gap between the two vehicles. My left front quarter collided with the second set of wheels on the semi. I then was turned and the rear started to enter under the trailer. Fortunately, the rear tires of the semi struck my rear quarter and kicked me out from underneath the trailer. I spun and struck the side of the car that was in front of me that I had been trying to avoid in the first place. Eventually I came to a stop facing the wrong way on the side of the road. No one injured, the semi had no damage.

Eh I guess it could have been worse. I could have been caught under the trailer, or I could have hit more cars. As it is, the Scion may be totalled. Now we wait and play the insurance game.

Scary but good thing you're ok.

And yes.... the stock tires SUCK... The Potenzas are performance tires.. not good for snow. I changed mine out already.

People need to stop tapping the break. I know it is an old habit but you really need to just step on it. You will probably still crash but I think you need to break that old habit :).

Hey sorry to hear about your accident, that definitely sucks..

But yeah a lot of us have been saying for some time that the stock tires are terrible and you just saw how bad they are.. We've been trying to warn people.. And I know i'm going to get people defending the stock tires (welcome to the internet, home of the debate).. and saying that they are good in snow.. you see how bad they really are..but the fact is they do suck..

When you get your car back (if it's repairable) definitely get some better tires! And if it's totalled, i hope it is, so you don't have to mess with repairs.. But if it is totalled and you get another tC definitely REPLACE the stock tires immediately with something better so that this doesn't happen again :(

Sorry to hear about this Justin.

Did you have GAP coverage at all?

Any ideas on your next car?

GAP covers the difference from the ammount owed on the loan to the vehicles actual appraisal value. I would suggest GAP to almost anyone...its cheap and its worth it if you ever do get into an accident and the car is totalled.

Any accident you can walk away from is a good one. Glad you weren't hurt.

I have a car without all the crazy computer bunk and love driving it in the winter. I'm not afraid of inclement weather at all. I put my winter car in the ditch(almost) cuz I was being a hotshot. But I have no problems driving normal in a good snowstorm. Glad you made it out okay though. Be safe.

I'm still working with the insurance trying to get an answer on repairs/totalling the vehicle. I was out of town for a week and had a heck of a time getting the thing out of the impound lot.

Unfortunately there's no gap insurance. Of course I never expected to get in an accident as this was my first (naive maybe?).

The accident happend on 90 East just before 90 and 2 split.

Just an FYI. The insurance has given me the option to total my Scion. They list a value of the vehicle at $17,135. That's not bad. I think I'll end up totalling the vehicle and getting another one brand new :D No negative equity is a very good thing.

Hey, I feel your pain. I wrecked my xB the 9th of November and spent two weeks arguing with my insurance. They finally totalled it Tuesday. Hate to say it but I won't be getting another. I was only going around 30 when I hit the car in front of me (because the car who was originally in front of me swerved onto the shoulder) and the front end of my car was totally screwed up. Good luck with your insurance, they are a major pain in the butt. And I had GAPP too, which in my case ended up not mattering because of the book value and because I had the extended warranty which will end up paying for the car. But in most cases GAPP is a good thing. Glad you weren't hurt! I can't imagine how crazy that must have been!!

I don't know where my car is, but the one you're talking about isn't mine. We took the plates off mine to transfer to my new car. And mine was only hurt in the front end - thank goodness!!

Yeah, my car was in the impound on St. Clair for a while. That was probably me... Silver tC, Smashed front left, broken hatch window, rear quarters smashed.
It's been totalled and I've just picked up my new tC today!! :)
Only took about 4 weeks from accident to get a new one. I can live with that since my last one took almost that long just to get here from order.
