Has anybody gotten the all clear taillights that are shown in the scion magazine with teh rear bumper applique? I ordered them, and then recieved a call from my dealer saying the lights are not legal and i could get fined if i put them on my car, and therefore he couldnt sell them to me. I am not talking about making the stockers clear, or the frosted ones, or tyc lights, but in the magazine it shows some clear ones, does any one have these, and should i be concerned at all about running jdm tail lights.

The lights not being legal is crap - the lens can basically be any color as long as the light emitted comes out red or amber or whatever color it should. If you get clear lenses, just get red and amber bulbs for your brake and turn indicators and you should be fine.

Tell that dealer hes full of ____. I am a student in the police acadamy and as long as the brake light is red turn is amber or red and the reverse is clear or white it IS PERFECTLY LEGAL meaning SAE and DOT compliant!!

Maybe because there's no red reflector. Where the horizontal lines are, that area should be red.

While the TYC version has that big red circle in the middle acts as a red reflector. Not digging the red turn signals.

Weither you guys are at Police Academy, or work for Mr. so-n-so, IF THERE IS NOT A RED REFLECTOR IN THE TAIL THAT CAN BE SEEN STRAIGHT ON AS WELL AS FROM THE SIDE WITH A WHITE LIGHT, IT IS ILLEGAL. Doesnt matter what kinda bulbs you run; colored or LED, its not legal. Thats why the tails do not have the DOT stamp of approval on them. No DOT, not legal.

the all clear taillights you see on the magazine is not all clear (the red part wasn't taken in the shot). its basically the same gen 1 tyc but in black housing, there's even a carbon fiber look too that they sell in japan. as for the DOT...those are legal unfortunately you have to stick an extra reflector on your bumper.

I have had mine since aug2003 and seriously the red looks like a reflector thats why i didn't put the reflector(which has the DOT stamped on it) But with all these altezza taillight around other cars would you seriously get pulled over for them? BTW when I bought these from japan I didn't know they were made by TYC. oh well

hope this helps

Just talked with NCSHP(that's North Carolina) and he told me as long as the lights show the proper color when they are activated that they were legal. He is a master trooper as well as a fto

And this is why the clears dont have DOT, but it legal right? So, when you get pulled over, or dont pass inspection, is Mr NCSHP gonna step for you and make it right, by breaking the law? Rightttt...

Ok Justin Timberlake, cry me a river.

You think I'm honestly that concerned with some DOT law that hardly any state trooper will even know about. And lord almighty, if you really think some safety inspector guy that never even graduated high school is going to know that you HAVE to have a red reflector, you have another thing coming to you.

In any case the worst thing that can happen is you get pulled over and get a fix it ticket, generally it will cost $10 for the paperwork, and you just have to swap your stock lenses in to get it signed off...

I also don't have two big holes in my front bumper for my state law required front license plate, haul me off to jail.... oh and I also speed... alot...

LMAO!!! Truthfully, the cops can pull you over for anything. On my old truck, I had DOT approved altezza tails and still got questioned about them from the cops. And the worse you react to it, the worse the cop will be with the tickets. A friend of mine got stopped for the all clear tail lights and then he threw a big fit and the cop wrote him up for the tail lights, clear corners, window tint, window tinted eyebrow, driving at an unsafe height(airbags), and then he went on into checking the legality of the bulbs. The all clear tails will eventually get you pulled over, but the altezzas can get you pulled over too, actually you might even get pulled over for the stock tails. By law you do need the reflector from the side and the rear, but then again, you need the amber front corners on there too, which is why they come from the factory with them and then we replace them or break them out.

You must have me confused with your momma.

I failed NJ inspection for modded tails, NO RED REFLECTOR ON THE SIDE.

In any case the worst thing that can happen is you get pulled over and get a fix it ticket, generally it will cost $10 for the paperwork, and you just have to swap your stock lenses in to get it signed off...

Why not got some tails that wont cause you to get the fix-it ticket and swap them out.

I also don't have two big holes in my front bumper for my state law required front license plate, haul me off to jail.... oh and I also speed... alot...

If the law is that you have to have a front license plate, and you dont, then get the ticket smart guy. Speed and get caught, get another ticket. You must have the knoweldge of a 3rd grader, your way or no way, and your way is always right bullS*. Keep thinking like that, and let your parents pay for your tickets.

The :?: was are they legal, and the answer clearly is NO

Lights usually are a state by state or even more likely city by city issue. Some towns will light you up for anything. I always install it then see if the cops mess with me. Usually the worst thing they will do is write a warning or a fix it ticket. Around here big bling rims and being in the wrong neighborhood will get you pulled over faster then any tail lights. (they just make up some reason, and pull you to see whats going on in the car.) In my experince I have never seen someone pulled for something like tail lights, its usually just a way a cop can stop you and see if your drunk or have drugs in the car.

I'm college educated. It's not my way or no way, everything is a balance in life. You do things every day that you make choices on and balance the outcome with what you are doing. Is it worth it to have a really cool looking car? Thats your choice, you've ranted enough about the laws, let him choose. It seems as if anyone doesn't agree with you then they are ignorant and wrong. So be it... Happy to be your friend.

Oh and I've been paying my own bills for the last 12 years. I can afford a $10 fix it ticket. I can't help it if you're so worried about it. But let this guy choose.

What are the chances someone is working on the altezza style lights, with the black housing and the proper requirements for not getting pulled over. Becuase, like someone else, i drive way to damn fast and i dont need to be giving anyone any more of a reason to bust my ___.

Its not that i think that everyone else is wrong, it that everyone that posts that the dealer is full of S* and other being misinformed is just not right. If the tails are not marked DOT, then it aint Kosher. This is the same DOT that regulates seat belts, bumpers, stability, etc. I would like to think that if a guy came here and asked a ? that i would be able to answer it correctly, not state ... " your dealer is full of S*."

Just for the record, i have my headlights cleared, which is clearly ( no pun intended ) illegal, but thats my choice, and i do know that its wrong, just like speeding, and not hanging your front license plate. Its all good, to each his own, but ill at least post the truth, rather then the guy get snagged for illegal tails.
