Clayton1’s Umnitza Thin-line/Angel Eyes/Demon Eyes/ Those cool BMW style headlight install DIY

Alright since there are plently of posts about how to remove your bumper and your headlight from your car but hardly anything about actually installing the angel eyes, I decided to make my own DIY. sorry that the pics suck. I don't know how to use my camera and i was in a hurry.

Here are my thin lines and my CF intake tehe
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes003.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes004.jpg

To start off remove your headlights (DUH)

Next start off by removing the 4 gold screws that surround the housing. There is one on top, one on the bottom and two on either corner.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes006.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes007.jpg
Then remove the 5 bulbs in the head light (High beam, Low beam, Turn signal, and the two parking lights.) Just twist the light and then they should pop right out.(Ignore the fact that the wires are cut I will get to this later.)
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes008.jpg
Next unscrew the 3 silver screws that hold the black ring in place. The black ring should fall off.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes018.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes019.jpg
Also remove these rubber things. I’m not quite sure what they do, but I took them off so they wouldn’t melt.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes013.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes015.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes014.jpg
Then using a screw driver pry back the rubber dust cover from the back of the headlight.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes020.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes021.jpg
Repeat for the other bulb.

Remove this bracket using pliers. Just squeeze the two clips on the underside.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes027.jpg
Now its time to bake the lights.

My old ___ oven with no temp. readings on the temp. dial. O well I have a thermometer.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes022.jpg
Bake for about 10-15 minutes at 220-230 degrees. (It may take longer this worked for me though.

Be sure and place the head light lens down and PLACE SOMETHING UNDERNEATH THE LENS SO YOU DON’T BURN THROUGH THE PLASTIC. YOU DON’T WANT YOUR LENS LOOKING LIKE A T-BONE STEAK.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes024.jpg

Remove the lights using an oven mit. THEY WILL BE HOT.

Next using a screw driver start next to the side marker and start prying. The sealant will stick to anything it touches so be careful. Also don’t use a nice screw driver (the sealant sticks the screw driver and its hard to get off). Be gentle and work your way down the length of the housing. If the sealant isn’t gum like then bake the lights for another 5 minutes or so.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes028.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes029.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes030.jpg
If you happen to get some sealant on your lens don’t worry, just get some Goof-off or something similar and wipe the sealant off.

Once you have the housing in two pieces. Look for the two screws on the back of the lens. Remove these screws. Be careful the light may still be hot.
Separate the lens from the housing (not really the housing but I don’t know what else to call it)
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes031.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes032.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes034.jpg
Now comes the fun part. Installing the Angel Eyes. Get some glue and place it on the end of a toothpick. (I used some all purpose rubber cement, but anything will do as long as it will stand up to 200+ degree temps.)
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes036.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes038.jpg
Now place some glue about ¾ in down from the top of the ring where the angel sits, on both side of the ring, and place glue on the back bottom part of the angel eye. (not to much glue, about a tear drop sized drop but spread it out.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes041.jpg
Next place the angel in place and hold it until it dries.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes037.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes039.jpg

Repeat for the other bulb housing.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes043.jpg
Now place the housing back in the lens and screw it on with those 2 golden screws.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes044.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes033.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes046.jpg
Next place the lens and the real housing next to each other and pull the wires off either side of the angel over the top of the reflector that’s in the housing. Pull the wires out of the back of the housing. Then gently, very gently pull the wires so that none of the wire can be seen through the lens.

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes047.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes048.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes049.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes050.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes051.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes052.jpg
Then push the lens back together with the housing and place back in the oven for about 10 mins at 220 degrees.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes053.jpg
Take out the light again with an oven mit. THEY WILL BE HOT.

Move all the way around the light and press the lens and the housing back together. Try and make them touch if possible.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes054.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes057.jpg
Next reinstall the clip on the bottom of the light.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes056.jpg

Now replace those 4 screws around the edges of the housing.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes058.jpg
Then take the wires from the angel eyes and pull them gently to the bottom of the hole out the back of the housing. Push them so that they fall into the gap in the housing (the place where you put the screw driver when you removed the rubber dust cover).
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes059.jpg
Then place the rubber dust cover back on. Make sure that it is completely seated.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes060.jpg
Then screw the plastic ring back with the 3 silver screws.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes061.jpg
Replace all 5 bulbs (High beam, Low beam, Turn signal, and the two parking lights) except for one of the parking lights. Don’t replace the one that goes into the low beam housing.
this light
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes064.jpg

this hole
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes065.jpg

Take some wire cutters and cut the green and the white wire. Make sure that you also strip off a bit of the cover as well.

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes064.jpg
Next get one ballast and two of the black clips that came with the angel eyes.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes067.jpg

Connect the black clips onto the ends of the white wires that come off of the ballast.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes068.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes069.jpg
Then insert the wires, that are now coming out of the back of the housing that are connect to the actual angel eyes, into the other side of the black clips.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes070.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes071.jpg

The next couple of steps are for wiring the angel eyes into the parking lights. You can wire the angel eyes to come on as soon as the car starts but I’m not sure how to do that.

Take the GREEN wire and slide it into the gold fitting at the end of the RED wire that is coming from the ballast. REMEMBER GREEN AND RED JUST LIKE CHRISTMAS.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes072.jpg
Then take a pair of pliers and crimp the gold fitting around the green wire.

Repeat the following for the WHITE AND BROWN wires.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes073.jpg
Again GREEN TO RED and WHITE TO BROWN

Then simply remove backing to the double stick tape on the bottom of the ballast and stick the ballast to the underside of the THE RADIATOR SUPPORT BEAM. sorry I don't have a picture for yall. But if you put the ballast on the under of the headlight then the ballast could short out!!! soo apparently you have to put the ballast on the underside of the upper radiator support beam where they will stay dry. I lost both my ballasts to water soo don't let it happen to you!

The finished product
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes075.jpg

http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes076.jpg

Now just reinstall the head lights and TADA (again sorry my camera sucks balls)
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/angel_eyes_tc/Angeleyes077.jpg

Thanks again to Umnitza for answering all my annoying questions (I think that I have called them more than I have called my girlfriend in the past three days). I hope that this helps yall. Maybe Umnitza might want to hit me up with some HID's for all my work or something, i don't know im just throwing that out there. hahaha jk. ask questions if you have any.

I'm curious. Is there any reason no one is making holes to pull the wires thru the trim section. I see everyone just running the wires up and out the reflector hole. Seems to me it would look cleaner if there was not that extra inch or 2 of wire traces visible.

I haven't pulled mine out yet and was just wondering if anyone tried this and if there is a reason why that wasn't attempted.

Thanks in advance!

Many people prefer not to drill I suppose ;)
We pride ourselves on making our products "easily installed with no modifications to your OEM parts - uninstalls without a trace"

With that said, if you want, you can certainly drill!

gko
11-23-2005, 01:02 AM
Oh please!

Removing the front end .. baking the lens .. seperating a critical seal that is in high risk of not re-sealing properly .. and that's not modifying the OEM equipment?! (not to mention this guy cut-off one of the OEM bulbs)

Sorry! Not trying to bust your nads(honest) but thats reaching!

I plan on hiding the wire as best as possible and just wanted to know if there is any obstructions that prevent you from doing that. I admit, I'm completely anal about wiring. And when I look at the finished job, the wire is the first thing I see.

Jlevi
11-23-2005, 03:31 AM
In my mind, once they are baked back together, that really is not modifying. If you close it up the way it was sealed from the factory, it's not modified - it appears and functions exactly the same.

Modification, in my mind, is me with a dremmel tool in my garage hacking out 6 square inches of ABS plastic behind my AC vents to fit a navigation system back there... or spending 3 weeks molding a bumper from a wider M3 onto my car ;)

hmm... i just wish the glowing material wasn't white. a good pic of the finished installation on the car with the demon eyes NOT lit (during the day) would be nice. our light housing is charcoal gray and chrome, so i am not sure about the aesthetic of the white ring during the daytime. but it could just be how i am picturing it in my head.

kind of an extreme installation, though. unsealing and resealing the light housing isn't for the faint of heart (and i'm not saying that bc i'm scared... i've done way more extreme and permanent mods to my other car). i have to agree with the previous poster who said that it's a stretch to call this a change to your car which doesn't require a "mod" to the oem parts. installing a strut tower bar is a "no mods needed" kind of installation. i'd say unsealing and resealing your headlight housing counts as a fairly advanced "mod"....

still, the finished product is pretty hot. my preference would be to wire them up to a switch so i could leave them on when i'm @ a night time meet without leaving all my parking lights on. but hey... that's why i love scions. we personalize them to our own standards, not what everyone else thinks!

thanx 4 the daytime pic. hey -- here's a follow up question. when you melted apart your light housing... did any of the sticky sealant stay on the charcoal gray piece (the one you attach the angel eyes to)? or, did it all stay on the clear plastic piece?

Jaski21
02-01-2006, 07:16 PM
I too had immediate issues with the ballasts shorting out and corroding due to water (mounted them under headlights). I'm going to seal the ballasts with plasti-dip or some silicon and make sure the new ones go on the radiator support beam like Umnitza reccomended (after I contacted them). AND YES, you must remove the bumper to remove the headlights and install the wiring. This is not an easy mod... if those of you who aren't tech/mod experienced want the angel eyes I'd suggest having your local body/speed shop do it for you.

So does anyone know exactly how the parking lights work? Are they only on when the parking brake is on? Are they only on when you have your low beams on?
Would I be able to turn on the angel eyes during the day time without the the low beams?
Please help. I'm a little confused as to how the parking lights work, especially since the angel eyes are wired to them.

Jaski21
04-22-2006, 09:11 PM
The parking lights are on when you click the light switch to it's first setting. Try it when it's dark and get out of the car to see what lights come on. The first setting, which is the parking lights setting, turns on the parking/city lights, the corner lights, and the rear parking lights. The next setting then turns on the low beams.

I would like to configure the Angel Eyes like a fog light application (switch on the dash panel). I don't want to hook them up on the existing parking light wiring. Is this possible to use the existing fog light harness/ relay? Does anyone know if it comes on all tCs? If so, where do I find it?
Thanks in advance.

i'm pretty sure you can do this. you would need a switch and instead of wiring them in the park lights, you can wire directly to the battery.

I have a question about those thin line angel eyes. Are you able to buy those "cords" in any length, be it through Umnitza or some other dealer? Or are these a special product they personally make? Also, are they flexible? How cool would it be if you had some of those in your interior, maybe outlining the dash, or your gauge cluster or something like that, and to help blend it in, and to keep you from being blinded by them in your interior, you could spray on a thin coat of Niteshades. Or, maybe spray on a coat of niteshades to help it blend in, and then put them on a dimmer, or some sort of resistor so they arent as bright within the interior (because I would imagine they are fairly bright in person?)

Comments? Suggestions?

they're glass tubes, not anything that can be bent.

Dang! When I saw the first pic with them where they're laying on the bubble wrap, I thought they might be glass, but then I thought they might be plastic that's just heat formed. I was hoping they would be like mini rope lights :P (dunno if you're familiar with those. Used lots on houseboats for ambient lighting under molding and such)[/quote]

Great write up! I have ordered my halo's from JL and am waiting for them to ship... just a couple questions:

1) What kind of high temp glue should we use and where can we buy them?

2) What kind of sealent or plasti-dip should we use for the ballasts and where can we buy them?

3) Are the halo's visible at night when the lowbeams are running, or do the lowbeams drown the halo's?

4) How much whiter are the halo's then our stock lowbeams? Because getting aftermarket headlights will melt the wiring harness.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

you can. but I've heard people say that their angel eyes burst using the heat gun. primaryly cause of the high heat concentration.
I just got done installing my angel eyes using an oven. Although I have a heat gun, its easier and faster to go with a oven than the heat gun. Also with now brittle those angel eyes are I wasnt taking any chances of them breaking on me.

if you have an oven, just use it and dont waste money on a heat gun

I had these 2 years ago, Makes for a very aggressive look. After like 7 months the driver side lens started leaking, witch made the the glue holding the halo's turn yellow. Although it gives your car a great look, I had to do away with them because didn't want to keep repairing my headlights.
