The wife and I just got back from what is going to be our local Scion dealer in Dayton, OH. They have had a xA and xB for two weeks now and we were finally able to take a look at the xB inside and out. When I first pulled up the xB, my wife instantly fell in lovve with the xB. Exact quote, "That is sooooooo CUTE!!!". That was the last thing I wanted to hear! Anyway, I am glad she is in love with it. This was the first time she had seen on in person. Anyway, after spending about 20 minutes in fantisy land, I told her that I wanted a black one with a 5-speed. She wnt off on me, saying that she would not be able to drive it, blah, blah, blah, blah. I told her that sonce we had gotten married and had a kid, I have had to put up with driving cars, that I did not like, but I did it for them, and now I finally get to get a new car and I wanted a 5-speed. Before I was married all my cars where 5-speeds. I needs your guys input. Do I get what I want, 5-speed, or do I give in to the wife and go with an automatic? Either way I am getting an xB. HELP!!!!

I tried that line, "Well I could teach you how to drive a 5-speed". She wasn't buying it!!!
I know I am going to be making a huge mistake if I go with an auto!!!

do not.. I repeat.. do not get an auto ... if ya want a stick .. get the stick .. tell your wife she could learn how to drive stick .. or tell her to get her own ... LoL ...
ok.. so that might end ya up in the doghouse ... but if ya do it right you can make it fun for her to learn or ya get 2 xB's in your driveway...

MrSmiley,
It is funny that you mention getting two xB's. There was a xA sitting right next to the xB and my wife says, "Hey, why don't I get the xA (auto) and you get your xB". I was almost in heaven!!!
That woud be great, but we are planning to expand the family and I had to remind her that SHE was going to be getting MINIVAN next year!!!

I got the auto,I did not have the oppurtunity to drive the 5-speed and dealer only had 1 allotment left of 04 Xb RS 1.0.It was an auto and it was sitting at the port and was not spoken for as of yet.Plus I live a long distance form work and I guess I am just to lazy to shift. The 5-speed is defiantly quicker.Peace. :D 8)

first thing is first. kiddhan bharava
i didnt think they were gonna get the scions until june :?: (i didnt read through the entire post, dunno if allready asked).
anyways i got mine back in feb and its camo green. you'll love it. plenty room for the dastar (not sure if you wear one or not). but for me that was buying difference b/w mini cooper, srt4, and rsx.
oh yeh b/w buying a stick and auto. go with the auto. im telling ya straight up, you'll have soo much fun enjoying your car if it was a stick but when seeing that someone you care for soo much isnt having that much fun with the car because its not what they can drive its heartaching.
for me its my mom, she loves everythign about the car and it would be awsome for her to take it to work one day or another. but she cant because i was very selfish and bought a stick shift. now im even considering switching tranny's w/ someone who wants a stick but has an auto.
but bottom line, for ultimate good relations w/ your wife get the automatic :)

Jatt,
kidhan, right back at ya! It is nice to know that there are other Punjabi brothers enjoying their Scions!
I hear what you have to saying, but I am a huge car nut, and my wife, well she does not understand my love for cars. Her only reason for getting an auto, is that if her car is out of commission, then she could drive mine. True car guys know, if you want to enjoy driving, there is nothing in the world like going through the gears!!!
Like I said in an earlier post, we plan on buying a minivan next year. With that we will be a 3 car family.
Thanks for the advise about the fam! I am still leaning towards a stick!

Are you asking for marital advice, or a car advice?
If you're going to be a 3 car household, then even if one car is getting service, your wife can drive another one. Might as well get the stick.
I drove the cars back to back and I just didn't like xB's manuall tranny well enough. It runs out of room pretty quick and it was annoying, to me. YMMV. As far as speed... well, it's just a second faster. "One one thousand"

I've been married over 10 years now. Get the automatic even if it's not "her" car.
I always had 5 speeds, but had to give them up for her. It will make her feel more comfortable knowing that if she "had" to drive it, she could.
Trust me, this will show that you took her feelings into consideration.
I didn't drive the 5 speed, but the auto isn't as bad as some say.

How much time do you spend behind the wheel? How much time do you spend with your wife? Which chunk of time would you prefer to enjoy?
I have an Auto and LOVE it, but it fits my driving. I prefer to focus on the road and let the car figure out the trivial stuff. I've driven plenty of sticks and they have their moments, but overall I feel i get many more advantages from the Auto.
I can totally see your point about her choice is only relevant when the other car is broke down. I hate to plan everything for something that may not happen or may only happen rarely. Maybe you could make the case that for the price savings over the Auto, you could rent her an Auto when/if her car is in the shop.
Maybe she's just scared cuz she's never driven a stick. It can be totally intimidating to noobs. Here's what I would do:
Go to a local used car dealer and "test drive" something with a stick  Find something small that you can drive without a salesman, take it out on a side road somewhere and give her a lesson. She can get the feel of it and get an idea if its something she can handle or not... Just a thought, I've given a few stick lessons on a "test drive". hehehe

what goes around should come around. he's BEEN taking his wife's feelings into consideration with past cars, like he said. when is it gonna be HIS turn? compromise should go both ways.

Keep the piece in the household, get the auto. My wife hates the looks of my Hot Lava (auto) and thinks that my Grand Prix GTP is to big. You will never win...the auto will be one less arguement. Tell her that you will get the auto, but you get to customize it however you want :D .

Okay...i'm probably not going to give the expected answer....since i'm a chick w/ an auto...but i say go for the stick! She has her car to drive....this is going to be YOURS...so you should enjoy it. i mean it could be a lot worse, you could want an impractical two seater or a fixer upper that is going to costs lots of money. It's not unreasonable for you to have a car you enjoy driving. If she wants to drive it....she can learn to drive a stick, it's not that hard. Compromise goes both ways...it doesn't have to be you compromising on an auto.
When my bf (i know it's not a marriage but we've lived together for 4 yrs) got his car..it was a stick i didn't know how to drive. So i learned...so if i wanted or needed to drive it, i could. When i got my xA...i got license plates my bf wouldn't have gotten...and car seat covers that he doesn't like....but guess what...it's my car...i'm the one who drives it most of the time....and it makes me happy. Neither of us compromised....so we are both happy!

I have been reading everyones responses and appreciates everyones input. I have pretty much made up my mind and am going with the 5-speed, unless I loose a leg in the next two months. I just drove my bro-in-law's Audi A6 2.7T (chipped of coures!) and going through everyone of those 6 gears, just melted my heart!!! Ok, I won't have 6, but 5 will do and I won't have that nail your butt to seat sensation, but it will still be fun to dirve!!!
