hey thanks for the response yigs, i have an orange color scheme going on in my interior, any ideas for colors for the hvac? any help would be appreciated!

yeah i just put in the led neo wedge and i looks just like my soldered version just like yigs said. hopefully it will look better at night but i dont think it will. are these the ones you used yigs?

http://superlumination.com/images/auto_bulbs/neoall.jpg

they are about half way down and 1.49 a piece?

anyways, thanks for all the help!

I bought the blue ones to replace my LED solder job and the color came out looking like a light green or teal so I'm not too happy with the color. I'm going to have to go back to the website and maybe buy a different set now and try those out :P

edit: I bought a couple of the blue LED ones this time, we'll see how the color turns out on those.

so how did the led version of this bulb turn out....the $2.99 one? Anyone have pics? No resister soldering is required correct?

emfomas

i had the same problem as my soldered in leds with faded out edges but i think other people have had a bit more luck. i sanded down the leds so the edges look a little better. im going to try the bulbs maybe, or even the white leds.

I'm gonna bite the bullet (extra $4) and buy both sets and post pics of the different sets (LEDS and Bulbs). I've been watching this thread for a while let me at least contribute. :P

Okay I put the blue LED ones in today and waited until tonight and I must say they look fantastic, much much better than the regular ones and much better than my LED solder job I did before. So yeah, get the $2.99 LEDs instead of the cheaper bulbs.

I also put a pair of those white 5 LED wedge matrix in for my rear plates and those also look very good, much better than my old stock bulbs so I would recommend getting a set of those as well.

Ok here is the differences between the bulbs and the leds in an 06 XA:

Do not take the cream this off TRUST ME I'll tell you in a bit why.....
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a300/reys739/IMG_0246.jpg (http://photobucket.com)

These are the bulbs:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a300/reys739/IMG_0253.jpg

Huge difference but still the edges are dim.... anyways back to major mess up!!!

I pulled out the cream part and either I lost something or messed something up but my AC doesn;t work right. There is no contact with the copper and the middle 3 spoke thing in the pictures...I put a washer there and it makes contact but it's not right...any help in this situation would be appreceated.

Hey buddy! Ok, I started to think of how to do this myself, and took the two outer knobs off, but couldn't get the middle knob off...it seriously wouldn't budge. Do I have to take the middle knob off, or is it ok where it is??? Thanks for your help.....oh, and I'm doing green too most likely!! It will match the theme that I am starting!

Rey I bet you made the mistake of losing the little ball baring that is behind that center knob, well not behind the knob itself but when you detached the white part from the assembly you probably dropped the baring somewhere.

If it's not the baring look for a little tab that sticks out from the assembly. That has to go back in one of those little holes on the center knob assembly so that when you put it all back together when you turn the knob it will "click" to each setting.

I don't know, kind of hard to explain when you don't know the exact terms.

The good news for other people is that you don't have to detach the white part from the assembly and risk losing the ball baring just to replace your bulbs.

And the middle knob does come off just as easy as the other two, just make sure you pull straight out, jiggle it a little if you have to. Make sure to remove the two screws in front that were behind the outer knobs.

02-22-2007, 11:41 AM
From what i've read I lost a spring that goes between the silver 3 spoke mtal thing and the plastic thing wher ethe knob goes...The ball is where it is suppose to be I dropped it once but I found it..

___MmmBoxy___
02-22-2007, 04:04 PM
I tried to take out the middle one out once again, and it is welded in place or something! :P It will not move! It turns, but won't pop out. I jiggled, I twisted, I pried!!! Maybe my hands aren't strong enough. That happens some times... I will ask a big man to try it.....and watch, he will get it on the first try! Figures!! haha!!

Damn man, those look very good. Can see the blue/red colors on the dials too. Hmm..making me wonder if I should get white instead of green. White would match the speedo good, but green is better with my head unit.

well, i dont feel like reading this whole thread, so im not sure if this was mentioned yet or not, but you dont need to remove the cream colered piece on the back, just use a flat head screw driver to back out the old bulbs and put the new leds in. oh, and there is a 50% chance you will get the leds in the wrong way, if they dont work(like what happened to me) just swith em around

Anyone have a hint on how to take the center off? I tried the flathead thing and it dented the console a little luckily not very noticable though. Any other ideas/easier ways?

DubT
04-20-2007, 02:47 PM
I mean the actual center console. After you unscrew the screws behing the A/C, I cant seem to find a good place/way to take it off. I tried the flathead screwdriver prying a little but then it dented my car a little.

emfomas
04-20-2007, 03:26 PM
oh i see, you dont need a screwdriver to get it off, i had the same problem when i first was trying to get it off. grab right where the vents are at the top and pull out. these clips will disengage and then the bottom clips will follow. its scary the first time but them comes off super easy after that.

DubT
04-20-2007, 03:30 PM
Do I grab onto the actual vent thing? The one that directs the air? I tried that last night but got scared I was gonna break those so I backed down.

xb_toast
04-20-2007, 03:49 PM
Hey Dubt, after you take the screws out push down on the top of it, and pull out at the same time you have to put a little force into it. lol dont be scared it will come loose. When you used the flat head did you wrap it with tape? If you have more question let me know.

emfomas
04-20-2007, 06:03 PM
not the actual air director, the piece that goes around it. it will all come off in one piece.

I also just purchased the super white leds and recieved them two days ago, one of them didnt work and found out that there is a positive and negative and I flipped it around and it worked. Just and FYI

When I first put them in and tested them at night it was really bright in the center and dull on the edges, so I took them out and sanded them down to a cone shape and it was alot better. Now all I need to do is change the leds in the clock.

I used some 220 grit sandpaper that I had lying around. No they are not brittle at all and takes very little effort to sand them. I think the hardest part was holding on to the little buggers. :P All I did was sand them as I rotated them in my fingers to round off the tops, almost kinda cone shaped. (if that makes sense. :) ) I also sanded a bit around the sides, just enough to dull the plastic to help diffuse light. As far how much to sand off, I would say just enough to give it the shape. Took all of a couple minutes per bulb to do.

What color bulb covers you looking for?

If you're looking for the #74 led there, then you're out of luck. The only sources that I know of for that size led is online.

INFINI
05-02-2007, 04:02 AM
I guess I do not need to change the LED right? I can just take off the amber "cover" one and put on red ones? I saw red covers but for bigger bulbs.

I guess the thing is I want to change over the A/C color to Red and also the compartment below it + the area above it where the hazard button is.

But getting the A/C nob area color changed will be good enough, hehe.

Hey Leroy!! Thanks! That's very sweet of you.....or you were just really bored....whatever! Ok, but I just thought of something. Infini...have you ever heard of that colored saran wrap? I wonder what it would look like if you wrapped that around the bulb since you are having trouble finding the right size cover thingy (Has anyone found the right size???) So, I don't know if you want to try that out just to see, but it's worth a shot, right? And if you want some red bulbs, I'll order them for you, so you can still pay me cash? You want red ones right?

I was originally going to go to white, but after seeing the dark blue and amber from the HU I'm thinking of continuing that. I think a blue HVAC, blue/amber HU, amber clock, and maybe a bbist gauge face would be pretty sweet.

The bulb covers are for a 194/168 bulb. I haven't seen any small enough to fit like the stock cover. The 194/168 covers just drop in the hole and do not actually slide over the bulb.

^ Which caps did you use? That looks really good.

INFINI
05-21-2007, 10:25 PM
Pep boys and Auto Zone I think have them. There in a clear covered package with yellow back. they look a bit too big but they will fit almost 100% inside the wholes where the LED's go into.

SO basically you take out the LED's and take off the yellow rubber covers. Then before you put the LED's back you take a small stick or thin phillips head screwdriver to help push the Red covers into the hole all the way. Once they are snug just put the LED's back in place and replace the panel making sure all the plugs are attached again and walla.

Unfortunatly the LEDs produce an uneven look so this is a better option i think. I think it we can find one that fit's a well as the OEMs it might be brighter as is is snug and there is less space for the light to escape.

Out of the three Autozones and 2 Advanced Auto Parts I have been to none of them carry the gel caps (I think is what they are called) or rubbers, whatever. Anyway if anybody finds the manufacter online before I do please let me know I really want to do this but can't find them anywhere. Infini I know you are looking but if anyone finds them first please post a link or something. Thanks.

Yeah I'm getting kinda irritated. Everyone I have went to says"Oh yeah, we used to carry those but not anymore" and when I ask why not they say there isn't enough demand for them. :nope:

Hmmm, well I still have not found out the manufacturer so I will make that a priority. Than you guys can do a search and find them online. I mean if Autozone had them than they can't be too hard to find some where online.

Pilot is the manufacturer. I was told the same thing at two of my local autozone stores as you were Night_Shadows. I found plenty of them at the local Pep Boys. I could not find them specifically listed on the website, but this is the manufacturer.

It looks like Victor also manufactures them. These are not the brand that people have been using, but they should work too.

You can not order off either one of these websites is the only downfall of them.

What color are you looking for Shadows?

pretty much? does that mean yes, just a swap, or yes, just a swap with some work required? Because this will probably be one of my first DIY projects, and I want to start with something easy. Thanks.

Yes, just a swap if you purchase the correct bulb and base.

You're good to go with it Murbyrne. Just be careful not to break any clips or lose any parts. If you read through this entire thread, there have been a few people that have had issues with the ball thingy and losing the clicks when you turn the knob. Just take your time and pay attention and you won't have any problems.

Do not take the cream this off TRUST ME I'll tell you in a bit why.....

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a300/reys739/IMG_0249.jpg

I pulled out the cream part and either I lost something or messed something up but my AC doesn;t work right. There is no contact with the copper and the middle 3 spoke thing in the pictures...I put a washer there and it makes contact but it's not right...any help in this situation would be appreceated.

Ok, well i'm a little confused...Do I or do I not take off the cream colored piece (like the one above)? I'd hate to take it off and have the same problem reys had. So How do I get to the bulbs without taking off the cream colored piece? Do I just unscrew those grey circles pictured at the bottom? Can someone please clarify, thanks.

do not take off the cream piece. Just twist the grey bulb bases and they should shake out.

I dont know if this has been said already, but you guys know you can use 3mm LEDS with resistors on the from Oznium.com right? They even have a walkthrough on how to do it. It's the one with the corvette and the window control color change.

HoldFastHope

For future refrence, anyone know how you take out the wire clip thing thats in the middle, pictured below http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/ac_color_change_xb/06.jpg

I can get the other three clips off that are to the side of it but not that one that's right in the middle. Do I just pull it out? Or do I push something for it to pop out? Cuz I tried both and nothing was budging. Without taking it off, it really made things much more difficult and it scratched the part right beneath the passenger airbag indicator. :(

Anyways, I finally put in the LEDs from auto lumination and i've gotta say, they look fantastic. The dimness around the edges isn't as bad as people have said. Its really not noticeable. Anyone who wants to change out the color of their A/C controls, definitely get the LEDs instead of the rubber thingies.

if you go to oznuim.com the c5 corvette led's fit perfectly in the factory slots. just unscrew the old, and screw in the new!

if you plan on making your own using the factory holders the 5mm leds are to large to fit in the holder so you want to get the 3mm led's

Ok i ordered the 74 Type B's from autoilluminations a couple of months back and just got to installing them.

Thing is I ordered the blue but when they are lit up they look aqua and don't match any other the other blue led's that i had changed. Did I miss a step in the install or has anyone else had an issue with the blue bulbs no being a deep blue?

Not sure if you've corrected your problem or not......but.....

If you bought LED's, then turn them 90 degrees and give em another shot. They only work with the proper polarity. If they're incandescent bulbs, then yeah...the copper wire isn't contacting properly.

YES I KNOW WHICH RUBBER COVERS WORK!!!

The autometer deal is what I beleive the guy who started this thread used-I got automoeter an dthey look EXACTLY the same.

They were $4 for 3 covers (they came in apackage). They are autometer shift light boots-#3512 for the green (I believe the other colors just change the last 2 numbers?)

They worked great!

I will try to post photos tonight or tomorrow of the finished project as well as the exact product in packaging I used.

I soldered new leds into my gauge closter and instrument panel. The only problem Is I cant get the led i soldered in for "N" netural working. I have p, d, r, 2, l lighted up in blue led, but for some reason the neutral led doesnt work... I tried 3 different leds on that connection point and it still didnt work. Did I somhow burn out the connection points on the mothebrpard for the N logo? Is there a way to fix this, although its not that big of a deal.

I installed a pair of blue 'corvettes' from Oz today. Plastic backing on them is much softer than the stock ones, and they really started to tear up from the screwdriver. Lights up the center dial perfectly, but could be brighter on the AC/Defrost buttons and the far left and far right dials. Stock bulb sort of does the same, I suppose.

Now to get the stock radio in blue...

If we could find out what size they are, we could replace them with brighter different colored LEDs. They are really small, I couldn't find them anywhere, even OEM Replacements.

Any Scion/Toyot dealer rep, please ask your parts dept. to find out the size for us, thanks

if i remember right oznium.com has the bulbs along with other led type bulbs for any projects and they have a specific section for scions on the website
