ok ..... it looks as if the root cause of my stalling issue has been found!!!!!!!
after multiple trips to the dealer and multiple coversations with Japan a bad ECU has been located. its throwing a "bad valve" code so a replacement ECU is on its way since the dealer has assured me that it can't possibly have a bad valve or it wouldn't run at all
i've been without my baby for 2 days now .... hopefully only 1 more to go

i hope it works. the last stalling problem i encountered on toyota was related to the throttle body.

just wondering how often would your car stall? once i was at a red light just sitting there and when i was about to start (light turned green) i found out that the car was off! scared the crap out of mee. there were 4 other people in the car and they said i didnt stall because both my feet were off the gas/brake/clutch. the thing is it only happened once and never happened again. scared me. should i tell the dealer about this the next time i go get my oil changed or was this just a one time thing?

this was the 5th time it was in for the same problem (i am very close to going lemon law :( ) .... it would stall about twice a month .... but sometimes as often as 5 times a trip
i would mention it to the dealer, but mine's been extreamly hard to diagnose .... in fact this last time was the first time they could find anything wrong at all .... and all they could find was a "pending" code, but it was enough to get them to replace the ecu

Are y'all aware that overfilling the gas tank can cause stalling? I didn't know that until we had several of our new cars stall during test drives. We tracked the problem to one of our porters who was over-zealous in topping off the tank. Hitting the lever after one or two clicks wont do it, but doing the trickle fill up the filler neck will do it.

nope. i never top off the tank. whenever it clicks and turns off i put my cap back on.

when you top off a tank, fuel can surge through the evap piping into the evap canister, and after the canister, if it's a bad system, it can run into the vacuum lines and into your tb. that'll make it stall for sure after you fill up a car.
however, it should be gone after a few minutes.
of course, there would be a permanent detriment to emissions system, perhaps permanently damaging your fuel economy.
this all depends on whether or not your car has an evap canister. :P

ok ..... ecu has been replaced and the code that was being thrown was that the crank and cam were out of sync ..... and why they think it was a bad ecu was that if that was the case it would not run very well, but minus the stalling it was running like a top
the real test is comming, making a trip to san diego this weekend and trip up to yosemite the weekend after (which is the trip on which it has always stalled before) .... we'll see

Make sure to watch RPM's, and that they don't flucutate.. It will indicate a Bad Throttle Body..
