I spent less than $800 and I get 17" with nice nitto performance winter tires (v rated). If you want to go my route.. let me know ill help. Click my profile to see it. Or you can by steelies and snow tires (going 80+ not very comfortable) and pay a little less.

yeah .. i have a set of no name snow tires and boring steel wheels for the winter .. got them at the beginning of the previous winter and the tread is still almost new .. i would highly recommend gettin 15's w/ snow tires cuz it is cheaper in the long run .. snow tires for 17s can be mighty expensive ..

I know some may roll their eyes at this but do any of you have pictures of their car with these steelies on? It snowed today and I have the RS with those 18's on.... In slush I was all over the road. So I'd like to get something but dont know if the normal 17's will really do much better.....

I'm using Bridgestone Blizzak SM-25s on the stock 17s. Retail on them should be around $550-600.

but you have to put the tires on and off. Pain in the arse :P

Anyone know the offset for 15" wheels? I have some 15"x6" with 5x100 off a VW with 35mm offset. I assume these will work for snow tires? Anyone know?

Yes, they'll work. It might be tight around the disc brakes but it will work. 5x100 is the right bolt pattern. 35mm offset is out a bit more than normal but they're 6" wide tires (Narrower than stock) so it will be fine.
