So i was driving my tC on harlem and cermak around 7:15 p.m. on thursday and i was coming to the light going north bound. i got in the right lane (placed my signal 300 feet before the intersection) and a dumb @$$ old fart lady cuts me off from the lane to my left with no regard whatsoever(Keep in mind that at this time we had about 7 inches of snow and going on the ground). so i slammed on my brakes(because tapping makes it worse) and suddenly my car spins outta control. so i'm sittin in the middle of the focking intersectin, cars beeping, spinnin out and this old fart goes on her merry way driving her Buick POS! I mean c'mon lady!! WHAT THE FOCK? ya know. Farts over 65 should NOT drive at all. Anyway. BE CAREFUL OF OLD FOEGIES WITH BUICKS!

considering the storm, i had semis cut me off, little civics, plow trucks, anything you can think of i had cut me off today. I think even santa in his sliegh cut me off to if im not mistaken. She prolly didnt know what happend, unless she did. I would've done the same thing if you spun out of control too. Why the hell would i get out in a middle of a storm and tell ya sorry ? but then again i wouldnt be one to be cutting people off in a middle of a storm anyways.

How did you get out ? or were you stuck to begin with ?

I've found that old people in Buicks should just be a big
warning sign in general.

grew up in colorado & would never slam on the brakes - ie front tires locked
up - no steering -- no control of where the car was going. I'm not baggin on you
and I wasn't in your car at the time to see the whole scene play out. Not all old
people drive like crap -- most -- but not all. I'm old too and hope to still be a good
driver when I hit 65, but if I'm not I'll quit driving, but you just put the kiss of
death on yourself by saying people shouldn't be driving at 65 -- so I guess you'll
stop driving when and if you make it to the age of 65 -- Take care -- Peace

I know he was just venting some steam and I cant really blame him for what
happened to him. I guess the statement that anyone 65 or older shouldn't
be allowed to drive. I feel there should alot of revisions on who should and who shouldn't
be allowed to have a license. The europeans & the asians have much stricker
requirements to get a drivers license than we(america) will ever have. Which
is too bad -- we need them. Driving is a "privilage" not a "right"!!! This time
of year we get all the "snowbirds" who really screw up stuff around here. So I
can relate to this young mans frustration. Just my 2cents guys

Statistically, you are far more likely to cause a deadly accident than the old lady. . . and you are the one who spun out. I'm not criticizing you, nor calling you a bad driver, I'm sure you aren't. I'm just pointing out the fact that senior citizens RARELY cause severe accidents. . . usually they cause fender benders, at best. Even so, they are a small risk, thus why their insurance rates are significantly lower than ours (25 and under).

And from my experience, isn't slamming the brakes in the snow a bad idea? There's too much weight transfer to the front, leaving the rear tires without traction (thus a spin out). I thought you were supposed to gradually apply the brakes, in a smooth fashion?

Did you know that in many tests, ABS has proven to REDUCE braking distances for the sake of control. ABS isn't a license to stop the brake pedal. Ironically, you can spin a car out without even using the brake. . . especially in the snow. There is such a thing as lift throttle oversteer (simply by getting off the gas too hard, you can push the rear end out).

In the snow, control is maintained via controlling the weight transfer. Heavy braking throws all weight FORWARD, removing all traction from the rear tires. It doesn't matter if ABS engages or not, a tire without weight on it is a tire without traction.

Just try it in a snow filled parking lot. . . drive in a small radius circle at a constant speed (keep it under 15MPH for safety's sake), and slam the brake. Have fun and don't roll your car over.

If he were moving at much faster rate of speed than the other car (or she was going REALLY slow), then that makes total sense.

I wasn't there so I can't really say. . . but personally, when I drive, my first instinct is not to step on the brake. . . it's usually the best way to loose control, either from overloading the front tires and inducing understeer, or underloading the rear tires and inducing oversteer.

I'm always scanning for my outs, and often use them, smoothly maneuvering the vehicle. Defensive driving lessons come in handy, and have saved my butt many a time.

And it really sucks what happened, I just don't like people coming down hard on older people, because you'd just be stupid. We reduce far more accidents and deaths if we moved the driving age to 25. Contrary to popular belief, senior citizens do not cause massive amounts of accidents or deaths. The only thing they do is annoy us with their slowness. An old man kills a few people and he makes the news. Yet everday, more people die on the road than people in Iraq. And a MASSIVE, disproportionate chunk of those drivers that cause these accidents are under 25. It's true. . . look it up. Third leading cause of death in the world, THIRD.

When I first responded to this it was on the main page - latest posts - so I didn't
really think about which region it came from, alot of snow states, but I have lived
in colorado.utah and washington. Alot of snow driving. Here in phoenix they don't
get snow in the valley which is good because they can't drive when its dry out and
they just freak when it rains. If it ever snowed here I'd stay home and stay safe.
