i have heard of the 1st to 2nd gear shift which i havnt had any problem with but mine does it from 2nd to third,but if i shift at 4000 it seems to not do it as much,its not a grind or anything it just doesnt go in smooth like it should ,does anyone know if tranys gota break in or something.i heard if you put synthetic in it itll help but i did that on my honda and the trans went out after a few thousand miles so i wouldnt recomend it to anyone.

I got about 700 miles on my car and i noticed it the day i drove it off the lot. I thought it would get better after breakin in and it has, but there is def notchiness going to 3rd.


One thing i have noticed though is that like my s2000, the tranny is happier when you shift at higher RPMS. Just dont slam the gears

BTW, i got an xB. I never drove one until after i bought it. I did test drive an xA which did not have this problem from what i could tell. WHat do you guys have?

 

the gearbox is NOT buttery ... i have 8000 miles and still its stiff

 

mine is super smooth ...but i've heard that could be cuz i shift at around 4000rpm...when i took my test drive at the dealer, the "scion specialist" said that i should shift between 4000 and 5000 rpm, and i've never had a problem

Mine is the same. You just have to find the gates. Even my old VWs are easier to shift, and the shift linkages on them are 8 feet long!

Nothing particularly wrong with the shifting, you just have to be slow and deliberate about it. The car does feel as though it needs a 6th gear, though.

If you've got a couple hundred miles on your car already, those of you who are interested might want to try and switch to synthetic tranny fluid...makes a WORLD of difference.

 

Its funny you say that Van. We had this debate numerous times on the s2000 board and its funny how many people went from dyno oil to synthetic back to dyno.

The synthetic is def the way to go if you are going to stay on top of it. It does however lose its viscosity after a very short time compared to the OEM oil.

Personally, I believe its the synchros. I just think the tranny is not able to keep up with quick shifts. We ll see. I plan on getting the trd short shift along with a better shift **** and isolating the problem.

 

I've noticed that when I shift at 3000, the shifting is smooth, at 4000 still smooth but from 1st to 2nd it gets a little hung up, like the shift gate is crooked or the gears are not synched. shifting any higher than 4000 is rough business. Anyone also notice that 1st gear is really only useful if you are looking to peel out from a red light or if you are on an incline? When I start from 2nd, I get a smoother acceleration and no stutter at all, even with minimal gas. Gearing this thing as low as they did essentially makes 1st near-useless and makes cruising at 80 mph at 4000 rpm a noisy and fuel-consumptive proposition. I wonder if anyone can tell me if any car has ever been built with a manual tranny with an electronic overdrive in it's highest gear. It would eliminate the need for a 6th gear, not add too much cost to the car, and would drop the rpms about 700-1200 when cruising.

 

I noticed right away 1-2 was extremely notchy. but after about 1500 miles, it was getting smoother. I have 2300 miles on it now and 1-2 is pretty smooth. I never had a problem with 2-3 it has always been butter for me, 3-4 is fine and 4-5 is long but thats expected...i think. we need a 6th gear tho! the final drive is so high on these damn cars. I heard someone on the board say that the final drive might be swapable out of an echo, any validity to that?

 

1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th its as fast as i can pull it back.....2nd to 3rd is a sob sometimes....
buts its my style of shifting....i have a short shifter in the civic and then i go to this.....all the scion needs is a short shifter.....

 

The TRD shifter doesn't help at all. Shifting is still slow and knotchy from first to second and reverse also has to be done very carefully to keep it from grinding. It really sucks, especially for a new car. The 4000rpm at 80mph sucks too. I know this car'd drag coefficient is not that great, but if youre just cruising you dont need your engine screaming like that. Im thinking enough people are gonna complain about this sub-standard drivetrain that maybe for 2006 theyll replace it with the corollas 1.8 and a tranny with more dignified grear ratios. Dont mean to sound like I hate my box.. Ive had it since July of last year, and love everything else about it. Im not sure if this drive train will keep me interested enough for another four years till I pay off the car though.

 

Yeah the feel of the Scion tranny is pretty crappy. I've ground 2nd twice because its hard to shift into and I wasn't used to that. I'm a Honda guy and Honda is pretty much the ____ at making manual trannies and their shift feel is awesome. Toyota has a lot to learn in that department.

 

A lot of guys in the Honda world use GM Synchromesh. Its supposed to be badass for an OEM tranny fluid.

Toyota has thick ___ 75W-90 gear oil. My Honda used 10W-30 tranny fluid I think. Major difference. I would be scared to put a thin oil in my tranny though.

 

On the tC, 2 -> 3 is fine, but getting into 5th is a bit notchy. Overall shifts are smooth though a bit on the long side.
