Default i killed my engine

i heard an un-tC-like rattling in the engine a few weeks ago, right before my scheduled 10000mi service (more like 12500)....

anyway, i took the car into the dealer last week and they told me one of the rods was toast and they are replacing the whole bottom end of the engine. thank somebody for the warranty.

supposedly i get to pick my car up tomorrow and i will let you know what happens...

manual or auto? and do you remember if you ever accidentally missed gears... maybe revved too high in a gear and ended up breaking/bending that?

it's an auto.

and it may have been over-revved. i also drive the thing like a bat out of hell.

i am frustrated that it's not a manual but my clumsy wife would never be able to drive it. i need to buy a porsche and let her have the mario kart.

uh-oh.......

that's how it all started out.

press the accelerator while in neutral and at about 2000 - 2300 rpm's you get a little rattle noise. sounds like an old mercedes for a second.

the noise came from the side you are describing.

as far as "toast" goes, i will see tomorrow as i was half asleep when the service rep called me to tell me the engine was fried. he mentioned 'rod' and ' not good'... that was all i needed to know at that point. my money is on bent rod though... i don't recall any mention of a main cap.

that's scary. It would be disappointing if some tC's needed major engine work after 12K miles.

Hey bro.. The guy they were refering to is me. Click here for some insight as to what you have to look forward too. It cost me $2,181.00 to have my short block replaced. I was responsible for labor because of my WR Short Ram Intake had shavings in it, and they voided my warranty. Please also let me know what happens.. because if a bunch of us also have the same problem.. I need names and what dealership you took it too.. I might be taking Toyota and Scion to court.. myself and James from Creative Compacts. Both of us had the same issues.. and they said it was from over revving.. we think that the clearances on the crank were too tight and caused bottom end problems.. keep us up to date though.. it may or may not get ugly... hope it all works out!

Another thing you need to realize.. the rods on the tC are cast pieces.. you are not going to over rev your car enough to bend a rod.. period!! Dont let them give you the bullsh!t about you over revved your engine.. its just non-sense.. Make sure you get as much as you can in writing.. make sure you take names and #'s of people you talk too also.. Please keep up on this thread.. I have a big personal intrest in your issue.

I think that is why I didn't hear mine right away.. I think one day I was just so tired of music or hung over.. I turned it off and noticed it.

Please.. anyone that reads this and thinks they have the same or similar issue.. get it checked out, take off your mods prior to going.. and get your car checked out.. as it stands.. I know of 2 people, myself and James from CC that has had the same exact issue.. what you gentlemen are describing to us is very very very similar to my issue.. please check out my post above and visit that link. I will also cross link this thread to it...

I took my car to Toyota for my oil changes every 5K. They usually told me what they needed to do and I would just say ok and pay.. I dont recall off top what exactly they replaced or fixed.. as far as I know.. nothing.. just oil change.. fluids, etc.

Why?

Ooo. I have done every oil change at the dealership, with one exception, and that was prior to all of this crap..

I am very very curious.. I know 5 out of XXX,XXX tC's is an isolated incident.. but.. it strikes me as odd that all the tC's had major differences in milage, mods, and driver mentality. Its odd that all the wordage and verbage used by Toyota and Scion are all so very similar.

I just hope in these other cases.. the dealership doesn't try and pull a fast one on these other guys.. hell.. I think me paying over 2k is worth the headaches for anyone else.. I just hate to see these cars all of a sudden start getting issues..
