My friend is having problems with Subaru (same problem just about all other WRX owners are having). He has a 2002 WRX with a dead front transaxle. He's never raced it or revved the engine really high. His car is still under warranty, but Subaru doesn't want to fix it. Now he has to come up with some money to buy a new transaxle and pay to have it installed. He also has to pay Subaru to put his car back together since they took his car apart to investigate. What he wants to do is get an STI transmission, but would like to know a good shop around the NoVA area to have it installed. Anyone have suggestions?

I don't really know the full details, but I've heard a lot of WRX owners complain about denied warranties. Similar situations have happened to EVO owners too. Last year I read on some forums what the actual problem with the WRX drivetrains are, but Subaru denies there is a problem. It's basically a major design flaw. The STI drivetrain doesn't have the problem.

i remember reading something about an arm sticking too far into the bellhousing with out the aid of a bearing so it would flex and screw ____ up.

Souljah, I read the same thing. How a company can design something so badly and tell their customers "sorry, we won't fix it".... It's FUBAR.

yeah that is a pretty crappy thing for them to do. but at the same time i'm sure they get alot of cars in for "warranty" work that had the ____ beat out of them so they started voiding warranties

Hmmm. ive heard of one or two people having a similiar problem but isnt is weird that the easystreet WRX rans 9s on the stock trans?

I'm the warranty manager at a Subaru dealership... there has to be a reason he's being told no.... Subaru won't just say they wont fix it for no reason. Are you sure he's still in his warranty period? His mileage might be under 36k but the date his warranty started probably ended a long time ago considering it's an '02.

He has an extended warranty. The dealership that looked at his car had someone from corporate come down to look at it. That guy decided my friend's fate. Basically, almost a month later, Subaru basically told my friend sorry for your problems, but we won't be able to cover it under warranty, you can pay for the parts and have us install it, or you can pay us for looking at your car and fix it yourself. Now, I know my friend has never raced. He has never over-revved his car. He's never done anything stupid or kid-like in that car either. There have been numerous lawsuits against Subaru for this exact problem. Now, there has to be a reason Subaru is being sued by so many people for the exact same reason. Yes, a lot of people with WRX's tend to drag race and such, but not everyone is like that.

My friend found out his front transaxle was broken when he tried to get home from a movie. He tried to back out of the parking spot, but the car was struggling to move from that spot. I'm just glad that he wasn't driving down the road when it broke.

I'm really sorry to hear about it. That really sucks. Do you know what kind of extended warranty he has? Because if it's not the Subaru Added Security warranty, then Subaru has nothing to do with it. Do you know where he took it to have it looked at?
