View Full Version : header/exhaust and MD emissions testing

Ok, eventually I'd like to install a header and a cat-back exhaust with a hi-flow cat. It seems like in the past when I've had my other cars tested, all they do is check the gas cap and plug into the ecu and read the codes. I can't remember if they hook the exhaust up to a sniffer for new cars (I don't think they do); I'm pretty sure they don't do a visual inspection (for the presense/absence of cats.)

Basically I am wondering if could pass inspection with a header and exhaust combo, or if I'd get nailed. Having to switch back the stock parts for inspection would be a pain (but at least it would only be every couple of years.)

Also, I can't remember if the emissions testing is always every 2 years, or if the car needs to be inspected 5 years after its purchase (if new,) and then every 2 years after that. I've heard both, and it doesn't specify on the MVA's website.

Thanks!

Haha, ok, does anyone know if I would pass inspection without bribing the inspector? :P

you will pass emissions and inspection as long as you keep your o2's, and converter. But if doin this set up causes your check engine light to set a code you won't pass emissions.

So basically no CEL = you pass eh? That's pretty much what I thought, just wanted to verify. Especially since I would be down one cat out of two with this sort of setup.

They do a mirror check for a CAT. The mirror is fixed at the booth on the ground but I have seen the portables around if they want to double check.

The truck I traided in on my box was a 1996 S-10 4.3 With true duals with 3 1/2" side pipes and no cats at all and it went thru no questions asked.
But it was easier when a friend worked there just gave him the money and notice and that evening he would bring the passed slip home to me.

I believe thats the only reason you passed... your experience will most likely NOT make this guy feel better.

If your talking about me,My friend hasent worked there in 10 years.
If the OBD2 does not throw a code you pass.
