DoNuT 04-23-2004, 07:15 AM I'm not quite sure I understand what you're trying to say, but if I'm right in thinking that you want to install a roll cage in your xA... why?

lol, i was thinking the same earlier...but I didn't want to dis my own car :(
Kodokan_4 04-24-2004, 02:37 PM I've been working on a roll cage design for my xA.
One of the complex issues is how to mount the forward supports. If the down tubes run in front of the dash, they will not be far enough forward, and they will occlude part of the door opening.
Solutions are to cut out the dash, and make room for the bars to go through it, or to loose the dash entirely (which would be okay for a track-only car).
Check out the dash and front area, and you'll see what I mean. I will figure out a proper solution, I just need more time to work on it.

2fixA 04-25-2004, 04:35 PM yeah that front piece would be going straight through the dash, which is an option I suppose since that thing is hella easy to take apart, and I imagine cutting it around the cage wouldn't be too bad... considering our pillar is so freakin' big anyways it's not a cage would take out any more of your view
SCI_FIRE 04-27-2004, 03:27 AM What about a roll cage like this one?

Although...
I hear it didn't do too good. I missed it. :(

Heheh.
mikochu 04-27-2004, 03:53 AM Sci Fire, that rollcage didn't hold up in the compactor... :D
Kodokan_4 04-27-2004, 11:34 PM If you go to http://www.highonscion.com and look in the gallery, there is a pic of an xB with a roll cage that goes in front of the dash. (I couldn't link the pic.)
I would prefer to modify the dash, and make a proper roll cage, but this is an interesting alternative. As it is, this roll cage is very dangerous on a street car. It's unpadded, and in close proximity to the occupants. If someone's head (without a helmet) hits that bar, it could get ugly.

kdanie 04-28-2004, 04:37 AM Any decent race car fab shop could build a good roll cage that meets SCCA or NHRA specs. I live about 20 minutes from Sears Point-several shops there could do it. If you do go for it use 4130 chromemolly tubing, it's much more expensive but it's stronger so it can be made of smaller/thinner wall tube than mild steel tube and still meet spec. I have heard several people that have installed mild steel cages in race VWs say they wished they had spent the extra $$$ for the 4130 version (they all re- did their cages in 4130 later).

lol... I'd expect that kind of comment from someone who lives near dirt and trailer parks!

ohcanada_00 01-05-2007, 03:54 AM i called auto power and they wanted 1500 for a cage. When all the other cages cost about 400-600 I said hell no.
Seriously though I think there is enough support to sell at least 3-5 of them here. I know I would throw down right away if I could get in at a great price.
USArmyWife1982 01-05-2007, 05:42 AM hey u forgot sistahs too !!!
IllNist 01-06-2007, 05:26 AM roll cages in general on the street are pretty dangerous. unless you plan on rocking out a helm at all times so when your car gets hit you are not knocked out or decapitated
hay ya... my past history with Autopower has been pretty much the same... pay for the time to build it and they jig it up so they can produce others on your dime. Pretty much smart thinking on there part for no risk... however I dont feel a $1500 "autopower cage is worth all that. So there it is... still no cage. And Q: why is it cages would be conciderd dangerous on the streets? I do some club racing so this was my thought for the cage, but IllNist mentioned his concern or comment... so just wondering?
Persocon 01-08-2007, 03:15 AM maybe cuz your head will hit the cage and open up? IllNist mentioned unless you want to wear a helmet all the time, the cage is pretty dangerous.
this maybe true for tall peeps... however I'm sadly short and most cages are less then 2" from any part of the A or B piller frame. So if I'm wearing the 4 point harness correctly, I see no danger with my allready lower positioned Sparco seats. But I can see a point if I were to run without all the complete gear... like if I added 150hp and never upgraded brakes or suspension! lol... I wrote something about this affair for the checkerd flagers safety years ago in Street Racer Magazine. I think that magazine died before TMR? Both good examples and pioneers of the early Import Scene.
BTW:Psyco565 contribution has inspired me to go the full monty like the xa team did. Thanks Moderator guru!
Psyco565 01-09-2007, 11:45 PM the SERT car? man I wish I could take that thing to the track... I think it's gonna be on tour for a year or so.
