Default Driving with your gas tank open...

My dealer a while back told me if I drove or turned on the engine even while the gas tank is open it would "suck in air" and cost me 200+ to fix it, I was wondering if this was true? Since yesturday I made it just out of the gasoline station realizing I left it open.

They're full of crap. And by crap I mean the other word that sounds better when you say full of ----

If you leave your gas cap off, your Check Engine Light will come one. Then the dealer will probably charge you around $40 to clear the code. Thats what we do.

What happens with the gas cap being off is the system thinks there is a leak somewhere in the fuel system due to the lack of pressure in the tank

I am not sure what autoparts stores you have around you but If you have like an autozone or something like that. they will clear your (turn off CEL) code and tell you why you light came on all for FREE!

Yeah I lost my gas cap for my old car for about 1 month and never had a single problem except a check engine light. Fianlly got a new gas cap when I decided to put some gas in the darn thing and noticed I had no cap there... lol. No problems whatso ever there. Which dealership are you talkin about Richie?
