really? i guess i've really looked at an xa interior. i guess it wouldn't bother me as much then lol. does the material used in the xb look/feel cheap?

hahhaah the car IS cheap..

anyways, the interior scuffs up WAY to easy.

the back seats are too vertical, maybe 1 degree more of angle..

as for the stock ride, the suspension feels like ___, its bumpy as hell in the back seat.

most of the above listed items are expected on a car at this price so I don't sweat those. Although I think the interior design is actually poretty good for a car like this. The lack of an armrest is the MAJOR bugaboo I have about this car.

I'll tell you this, I am happier with this car than I would ever have been with the NISSAN MAXIMA I was going to buy. I had a HONDA CIVIC EX before this and it was in no way as much fun!

I think the biggest thing is the missing armrest also. I never use one, but my wife always uses hers in our other car.

For a car this inexpensive; with this much style; built by Toyota, how can you go wrong?

For all you guys whining about the interior being cheap .... 1 what would you expect from a car that starts @14K and 2 drive a Hyundai Accent. The Accent makes the xB look/feel like royalty.

My gripes, the suspension, and that damn rattle from under the hood somewhere.

The sun visor sucks. All they had to do is make it so you can extend it when you use it on the side. Oh I don't like the new car smell either but that's a minor problem that will go away.

Boy I'm glad I'm old (relatively speaking, at least on this board) and have a clean license! My insurance is cheap. So buck up all you youngin's, your day will come.

In regards to the original question...people will always have something to complain about. I will tell you this, I love this car. It has many many features that I love...great gas mileage, low price, lots of "extras" that come standard, like power windows, AC, CD player, etc. For this price point, you will not find a better car that is stylish as well. As for rattles, I don't notices any in my car. :? I think the interior is fine. Like I said, you will always find people to complain, do YOU like it? That's all that matters. As for an mechanical problems, etc. I've had none. The only thing that bugs me about this car is the FM radio reception is bad. Maybe I can find a way to deal with that. Thinking about adding an antenna. But that is minor to me.

My pet peeve is the ride.

They should have made the springs softer and installed taller tires, giving the car an inch or two more ground clearance in stock condition

This would have encouraged the sale of accessories like lowering springs and wheels. A four-inch drop sounds so much more radical than a two-inch drop!

The dealers would have been happier, the blingers would have been happier, and I would have been happier! :)

I can't complain about much. This car is an astounding value for $14-15,000 for all you get. If I had anything to ask for it would be slightly thicker sheetmetal and heavier doors, but they are not out of character for a car of this size/class. I've been told that just a few minutes spent layering some soundproofing material inside the doorpanels will make a world of difference so I've got that planned as a quick weekend project for the near future.

A little more power would be nice, but the car does not feel underpowered to me. It gets up and goes nicely from a stop and never has trouble merging or keeping up at 80+ mph on the highway, even if the RPMs are a bit higher than what I'm used to it does sound healthy even when revving high. The only time it feels "slow" in my opinion is when you push it hard and TRY to accelerate *quickly*. It doesn't move out all that fast, but feels more than adequate in regular driving and the handling is a cut above most cars at that price and more than a few that are more expensive.

If you can find another car that seats four 6 ft plus people comfortably for a long trip or carry a 40" TV or La-Z-boy recliner in the back yet still handle great, gets 30+mpg and can parallel park in a spot that is as long as a crosswalk is wide and costs $14,000--- buy it!

Add to that a huge list of standard features, Toyota reliability and resale value that will make a Hyundai owner cry and it's an easy decision IMO.

showpaojoe
04-23-2004, 11:30 PM
No 6th gear. the engine feels like its trying too hard at 80mph

Also, hopefully you don't have the misfortune of getting a bad engine because some people have gotten engines that stall when you are coming off the freeway for instance and you push in the clutch to shift into a lower gear. And there is also someone like boxxlicker who's been thru 2 engines and and the new one didn't even start this morning.

and for those of you _____ing about the armrests, first of all the car doesn't come with it so you can't consider that a downfall. Also, the car doesn't come with navigation, 3rd row seating, turbo, leather, etc...There are people who have armrests in their scions, they made em themselves. I have seen one in a xA and 2 others in a xB.

i think people just like to complain. sure, there are things that could be nicer, sturdier, faster, etc. but you have to take a lot of things into account when considering why a manufactuer puts out a car. first, the car is light, so of course the sheet metal is thin. that's fine, it makes the car faster. we're used to american iron here in the US so i think having the lightweight doors feels "cheap" to us, but i don't think the car feels cheap at all.

not having a center armrest is lame and what's even worse is that a lot of companies haven't come forward with armrests that bolt on to the center piece somehow. or maybe i just haven't seen them.

vanity mirror: that would have raised the price of the car since they'd have to design a whole new part for the US cars. if you need on that bad, go get a nice big mirror at pep boys that straps on to the visor. it will be 3 times bigger than the other one, and you can get one with a light and it's cheap.

rough ride: everyone loves the good handling but hates how bumpy the stock ride is. actually, mostly older people complain about the rough ride, and i have always said that i think scion purposely increased the spring rate on the US xB because they want to appeal to the younger crowd, and it's a subtle way to get older buyers with more money to get into a matrix or camry or one of the 25 other cars toyota has. but what toyota didn't tell you is for less than $200, you can get tanabe springs and cruise like you're riding in a plush 1986 monte carlo.

see, you can work around almost every niggle you can come up with. but if you can't, then either a scion isn't right for you, or you are just a picky person and will never be happy. in that case, good luck and enjoy your miserable little life.

anyway, it's coming up on 1 year of owning my little xB and i love it. everyone has their own goals for their car. mine was to make it low, and i did. here is a pic i took last night for those who didn't see it in the corner carvers forum:

http://eric.myimprezawrx.com/photos/albums/userpics/low-dark-1-4-23-04.jpg

anyway, i love my scion and i would totally buy another one. i also like the nissan cube, but i am not a nissan fan at all. i'm hoping more box and kei style cars come to the us like the suzuki wagon R, honda life, and subaru pleo. but you never know what the manufacturers have in mind. oh well.

It's not like people are knocking the Box or saying I wish I hadn't bought this POS because.... Just pointing out flaws and shortcomings, critiquing it. Nothing on this list is a deal-breaker, not even close.

It's not a perfect car, but it's close.:D perfect for me, perfect for the price, etc but not perfect.

My car is finally here just gotta pick it up. My stealth had really rattly windows if they were down. I cringed when I shut the door. But the more I think about it the more I realize Toyota did what they planned on doing, they built a "tuner" car. You make it how you want it. I don't mind a stiff ride as long as it handles how I like it but I do like power windows and locks. Any problem I have is easily fixed by something I'd add anyway. I was looking for a car with some features I wanted but not much if anything extra. The only thing extra I got that I didn't really want was the strut bar.

Getting shocked... I don't know if this is true for anyone else, but I seem to get shocked alot from static electricity every time I touch the car after driving it and getting out.

The rear door..and how it some times just doesn't want to latch proper (presure build up from shutting it... I know)

I think it has plenty of power for what it is. Think in Japan the 1.5 is an option,,, we could have gotten a 1.3...

Interior is right on par with what I would expect. I still like that fact that you can take an economy car and get the owner of a $100,000 luxury car to stop in their tracks on talk to you about is really cool...don't know when that might wear off but I'm still enjoying it.

Given the chance to sell my car for more than I paid for it...I still choose to keep it. It'd take a significant amount ($2-3k) over what I paid for me to let go of it.

This is going to sound nit picky, but I don't like how the window, mirror, door lock, dimmer, and trac control switches aren't lit up at night. I paid $13k for my 2000 Focus ZX3 back in the day and it came standard with these.

Also do not like the lack of a cargo cover. Again, the base model ZX3 came standard with this. With the exception of the 11-some recalls for that year, I think I was spoiled by that little car. But then again, the xB is a huge improvement over my '86 SVO. ;)

For the price, there is nothing wrong with the B. It is the best choice under 20 grand IMO.

As far as factory options I would rather have, it would be:

1. Luxury package that includes everything that we _____ about. Slick black or two-toned Leather Interior, cruise control.
2. Quality, large Armrest with cupholders in the back very similar to the Toyota Matrix armrest console.
3. Possibly a factory sunroof option.
4. Possibly a sport package that includes a turbocharger and 2 toned sport interior.
5. The rear door many times bounces off and doesn't lock unless you hold it down and press in while shutting it. Atleast mine does.
6. Real cargo cover that is not a POS!!!!

7. An option to buy a hybrid xB!!!

That's all.
