The Japanese produce bulletproof manual transmissions, but I still hear of problems with their automatics, so the manual is the choice for reliability.
Also, my wife insisted on a manual. That overrides all other considerations!

Actually, I didn't! Seems kind of strange to have it that way. Is the bB aimed at Gen-Y over there or is it aimed at the general public? Might be that the manual option was added to appeal to the young (and young at heart).
In any case, when the wife says "manual", who am I to argue? :) If the 2WD Honda CRV came with a 5-speed we'd probably be driving one right now, but since they force an automatic on that model we waited for something better to come along, which was the xB!

i think there might be some power issues in an automatic, a 5 speed is very peppy around town, especially when you keep the revs up high

the manual is totally more performance minded compared to the auto.
but that's cool, not everyone needs that extra pep. however, any of you fools that buy an auto and then immediately got on here asking when turbo kits are going to be coming out...that's unwise. if you wanted performance, you could save yourself a lot of money and just have gotten manual in the first place. if you want to hold hands or manually stimulate your girlfriend while you drive, that's another story. but you guys do realize that you only need to shift when you're changing speeds, and when you are just cruising down the highway, your right hand is free to do whatever it wants.
once people go manual, sometimes they never go back. so the excuse that you or your girlfriend or wife doesn't know how is retarded. the xB is one of the easiest manuals i've ever driven, and you can teach or be taught how to drive one in less than 20 minutes. you only live once (unless you're hindu).

Really wanted a stick, I hate automatics, but g/f, soon to be wife, can't drive one. Granted the clutch take up is really short compared to my s2k. Stick is kinda low though. I only wish she will learn to drive stick - she doesn't even want to learn :(.
Btw, the auto doesn't shift very quickly, it seems there is a 1 sec. gap between upshifts. Maybe I am used to sticks, but it is a little annoying at times. I am hoping it's due to the lack of torque for crisp shifts. I hope the gap doesn't increase, as the older Honda automatics tend to exhibit.

clutch is tough in traffic -> Scion clutch is like butta
hand on stick shift instead of g/f -> let her 'shift' too!
can't hold my 44oz & burger -> remember the 'french fry passenger' commercial?
can't hold my 44oz & burger (solo) -> does the Scion come with cup holders?

eric_m
10-20-2003, 03:50 PM
the scion has really low gearing and is pretty cool for heavy traffic. just leave it in first or second and you're done. and shifting is so effortless in this car, there really isn't a good reason to get an auto unless you just think the manual is too fast for you and need something slower with less gas mileage. in my subaru with lightened flywheel and really crazy gearing, traffic sucked. maybe that's why i don't mind my scion in traffic as much. i just like to choose what RPM my car shifts in i guess. low rpm shifting for cruising, and high rpm for darting around.

I got the Auto and I will challenge EVERY one of you stick drivers to beat me into the City. If the Auto seemed gutless, you just weren't pushing the gas pedal hard enough. The reason I got the Auto was because of the way it is laid out with each gear separate. You don't HAVE to leave it on D. First turn off the O/D, 321. When I want to down-shift I do, when I want to hold the revs up I can. And I never get clutch foot. Try sitting in your car and just push your clutch in and hold it for 1 minute, let it out for 20 seconds, push in for 30 seconds, let it out for 10 seconds. Now hold it down for 90 seconds. REPEAT for a 10 to 20 minute period. That will simulate the Tollgate backup at the Bay Bridge. Tell me how the sole of your foot feels. Feel that pedal callous? Not on my left foot.

To all the people _____ing about traffic w/ a manual transmission, I work in DC and I deal with bumper-to-bumper everyday. The extra exercise my lower left leg gets is definitely worth not dealing with the hassles of an automatic. Once you learn how to drive a manual, you will rarely think about the extra efforts when stuck in traffic. It becomes natural. I'll never buy another automatic again, whether the car is a racer or grocery getter.

IMHO I dont think its an issue of learning to drive a manual.
I think its a hassle to be doing clutch-gas-brake motions repetitively while watching out for the fools around you stopping and tailgating all the time and cutting in.
Its alot easier to worry about two pedals and mostly just one-the gas- if you do it right. It gets old, day in and day out driving in hour and a half bumper to bumper traffic.
Half the reason I want a new car is to get an automatic.

I drove a 3.0 V6 manual tranny for years so driving the Xb manual just really made the power difference obvious to me, so I opted for the automatic. I test drove both and didn't feel much difference. Plus I spend a good amount of time in DC gridlock. 8)

I drove both the automatic and the 5-spd.
I felt the Auto, with its electronic tuning, had more pep off the mark.
The lower gears of the Xb 5 spd had to be rev'd reaaly high to get the kind of acceleration I enjoy from my Honda CRX.
I addition, with 1.5 under the hood, I was not about to sink gobs of $$$ into this thing to bring it up to performance level.
At 36 years old, and 20 years of driving,---driving with one knee on the steering wheel, one on the shift, one on my coffee and one on my boyfriend's lap, I was ready to get an automatic.
Although it WAS tempting in my RS1, I went with the automatic and that's why!

I absolutely got the manual.
I don't buy automatics.
I don't even want to drive YOUR automatic. Not for 5 minutes.
Personally I think it is insane to even offer an auto trans paired to a teeny tiny 1.5 liter engine much less actually choose that option.
A car like this needs a manual for acceptable performance, but some people don't want to shift. I think the best solution would be to offer a CVT. That way you would have none of the drivetrain losses. It would be just as powerful as the manual, you would get the same (or better) fuel mileage as the manual and you don't have to shift. They are also really smooth and keep the RPMs in exactly the right place all the time for however you are driving--- ideal for this car. The only issue again, is cost. :(

I'm still undecided, I could do both no problem, but maybe, since this is gonna be a cruzer, and haul me, the wife, and little girl around, an auto would be better. And, for those saying that autos aren't good perf. vehicles with turbo's, I'll have to disagree, as the GMC Syclone I recently sold (auto trans, turbo, awd) did perfectly fine.
Another thought though, for you manual peeps..wonder if the bolt pattern from the Celica GT 6-spd is the same..that would be a nice upgrade...one more gear...just a though.
I'm getting alot of good input form this thread that will more than likely help me alot in my decision.
If I do choose an auto (a sin in some of you guys/gal eyes)..is there ANYONE who makes a cooler shifter handle than the stock one...

Had to go with an auto. Would have preferred a manual considering the 1500 engine. But my wife has only driven with an auto and there is a lot of stop and go driving here in NJ.
That being said, we've been pleasantly surprised at how smooth and lively our xB drives with the auto transmission. Even the downshifts while going up steep hills are barely noticeable (note we have less than 500 miles and this was with only two in the car). Yes it is a little noisy when accelerating hard due to the high rpms. But this is not unbearable and a tradeoff we can live with considering the great gas mileage.
Don't think I've had as much fun driving a car since my teenage years with a VW bug. Yes it had a manual transmission. But it required this because it only had a 1200 cc engine and probably generated less than 50 hps. Normal mode of driving was to depress the throttle right down to the floor (aka pedal to the metal). But with the bug, you felt you were a driver (as opposed to being driven) and the car became a part of you. My early impression is that this xB also generates these feelings. 8)

I really can't stand automatics, I don't like the lack of control.
However, I test drove the xA with an automatic as well, and I thought that for an auto it shifted very nicely. not for me though.....

Manual xA.
Never had much of a problem in bad freeway traffic. If you're in 1st or 2nd gear, you can just let up on the gas and the car will slow down immediately. If you had an auto, you'd have to hit the brake to slow, then gas & brake & gas. The manual is more responsive in that kind of traffic.
When fully stopped, I also like to take my foot off the brake - relaxing. On an auto, you have to keep your foot on the brake, and hold it there, or the car will move forward.
3rd gear is also good because of VVT-i giving good low-end torque. You can slow down quite a lot (braking) and still be able to go without downshifting. (If in 4th or 5th though, you should downshift :D but that's just fun!)
But my favorite is downshifting to 2nd gear every time I have to hit the brake - for a red light, or for a turn. I try anyway  8) .

I am planning to buy the xB. I had planned to buy the manual trans. until I looked at the gear ratios.
In some reviews I have read that the manual transmission has high rpms and is loud when going highway speeds. The numbers show that the automatic would allow the engine to spin more slowly at highway speeds. I would like zippy around town performance, but would trade this for a better road trip car.
Any thoughts by current owners? I wish they would have made the manual overdrive a lower ratio.

I have an xA with automatic and it is much better than I expected. Here are my observed rpm numbers:
60mph = 2400rpm
70mph = 2900rpm
80mph = 3400rmp
The automatic is very well matched to the engine output and you won't find your self lugging around waiting for the car to catch up with the pedal. This is my commute car and it sees a lot of stop-and-go, so I am very pleased that the automatic is better than most.

you know i was wondering about the shift points on my new xB manual.
i am used to lower rpm trannies, so shifting above 3k came as a surprise. i assume this is operating as designed?
i will say a 6th gear for highway driving would be kind of nice. 4k at 80 seems a bit excessive to me, but as i said, i may just not be used to the toyota engineering. i've driven auto's for the last 6 years, so i'm sure i've grown out of touch with the current designs:p
i will say that i love my 5 speed zipping around town. much more fun:)

When I go around a curve or drive on ice & snow I like to have control of gear shifts. I gave up my 1991 Geo Metro one litre manual for an auto 2005 xA. Not a good exchange.
I too, drove in DC beltway traffic with a manual transmission for 5-6 years. It never phased me, but everyone's different. I suppose its a little less complicated to stop-and-go with an automatic, but I don't spend most of my time driving in bumper-to-bumper crawling traffic. It would take some extreme circumstances for me to choose an auto tranny. I just find driving them so much less engaging. I quickly get bored, even in a very very nice automatic car. On the other hand, you give me a little econobox with a manual and I can play race car driver.
Add a manual transmission and you can make almost ANY car at least a little fun to drive.
Add an automatic to anything and you remove any pretense of sporty driving. Slapping the automatic gear lever around is a poor substitute and its not even intended for that purpose. Its not a tiptronic, guys.
FYI, the manual xB got a 8.99 sec 0-60 vs. 10.8 sec for the automatic in Edmunds test drive.

my '05 xB has a manual transmission.
I had the opportunity to test-drive both the auto and manual and I could feel a significant difference in performance. Both types are as easy for me to drive with so I really had no preference... though I heartily understand why someone who deals with stop-n-go traffic daily would opt for the auto.
After a while you can get just as coordinated eating a cheeseburger with a 5-spd as with an auto. ;)
-----
Reminds me of when I bought my first 5-spd. I was 25 and never drove a stick before, but wanted a Suzuki Samurai so bad... and it was ONLY available with a 5-spd. So without test driving it, I bought it and had to have my Dad drive it home for me. That night I took it out on the back roads and after stalling 2 or 3 times, I finally got the hang of it. (I found it helpful that I used to ride a dirtbike as a kid)

Out of the 15 cars I have owned in 23 years, 12 have been 5-speeds, 3 were auto's. Struggled with the decision on the XB,,,really struggled. But since I still own a 5 speed 81' Rabbit Diesel, 4 -speed 79' Beetle Convertible and about to inherit a 4-speed 74' Custom VW Bus, I wanted the best of both worlds and went...
Automatique'''' as they say in the old world.
Not as fun as the 5-speed I am sure, but really and truly fun for an automatic and no power problems doing what I want it to do. And what a damn fine "relaxed" highway cruiser it is!
That was the clincher for me being the highway performance, I have owned "wound out , high rpm on the highway" cars before and they do tire me out after a couple of hours. I take a lot of 12-16 hour road trips, so it became clear to me after numerous test drives in both auto and manual. And like I said, I have both types at my disposal, so when I wanna shift, I go shift. When I wanna relax/cruise, I go cruise.
Peace.

Or you could just refer to one of the several professional road tests done by reputable car magazines.
Edmunds got an 8.99 sec 0-60 with the manual xB and every test of an automatic I have seen has been over 10 seconds.
In the history of cars, the number of models that were faster with the same engine and an automatic vs. a manual can be counted on one hand. The only one I can think of is the Audi A4, and that is with a CVT vs. a manual and a CVT is nothing like a conventional automatic.
When you pass power through an automatic and a torque converter etc, you get less power to the ground, period.

Well, first of all, Mine's different than the ones they tested, so are the ones I am referring to following, etc. Secondly, I'm not talking about the same pro driver in two factory-provided stock units, but me, the owner and person responsible for mishaps vs, another person in the same boat . Thirdly, That only tells me the results of 0-60. What about 0-30? 0-40? slow roll to 50? 0 to the end of the straight stretch? Where my cars at when it shifts from 1st to 2nd to 3rd compared to where the stick is shifting? Just because the stick was a second faster at the end doesn't mean the auto was a second behind the whole way...

i think the manual is a way better pick becuase the car has such low HP you can run higher rpms so its not quite as slow. and for saying the auto us a cruiser....you can get cruise control for the manual. however in stop and go traffic, like any manual, it sucks.

Fact: Traditional hydraulic automatic transmissions incur more parasitc drivetrain losses than manual transmissions.
Fact: The professionals driving both auto and manual versions of virtually every single car review get faster times with the manual.
Could an inexperienced stick driver lag behind an automatic? Sure, but all things being equal, manual transmissions get more power to the ground and that really counts when you have a 1.5 liter engine.
I can see definite advantages to having an automatic, if I wanted one I think I would prefer a CVT or SMG type deal. Many of the newer electronic autos are pretty good at not leaving you in too high a gear and hunting gears on hills, so that negates a part of what makes them unappealing to some people.

Funny, my dealership said that only 15% of the Scion made
are Manual Trans, but 60% of the users here voted manual.
I wonder if it's more of a case of "Enthusiasts Choose Stick"
Could be.
Automatics are great for delivery trucks, buses and Buick highway cruisers, but you remove any pretense of sporty driving when you opt for the automatic...and you cant fix that by shifting your automatic like a ricer driving his mom's Civic. :ttth:

Anyone can drive an automatic, skilled drivers included, I agree.
It's just that serious drivers choose manual transmissions because they like the control. Most people are more casual and prefer the convenience of an automatic though, at least in this country.

Hey,I love my auto. It's nice to have an auto after the last 6 vehicles owned had a manual. As far as sporty driving is concerened it depends on what type of sporty driving. In autocrossing the auto would have the edge because you could stick it in 1st and forget it whereas the manual you would be constantly hunting for the proper gear. It is a nice change not having to constantly row gears though.
I also love the fact that while cruising at higher speeds the engine is not turning such high RPMS

Manual. Just bought/ picked it up this week. It's growing on me.
When shopping for a new vehicle, and decided on the xB I 'swore' I had no interest in mods whatsoever, but within a day I was wondering how to shade the taillights and darken the window tints.

thought, and honestly, I couldn't stand the auto. After driving
the stick that was it for me.

This is the first car I learned to drive MT in. What a forgiving clutch! I tried to learn on a friend's Audi, man that sucked...
Now that I've tried both, MT for me all the way! It's just more fun to drive, but it's hard to put down a sourdough jack while driving around town.

I would have loved a MT, but I'm teaching my wife to drive on this thing and it HAD to be a AT.... I already tried teaching her on my Hyundai Accent MT and it was pretty scary! After all these years with the stick though, I'm actually starting to like the AT and the relaxation that comes with it.

Precisely. And every automatic I've driven has multiple personalities and isn't quite sure WTF to do, especially going up and down hills. The best I've ever experienced is the Honda automatic on the CR-V with grade logic. It knows to downshift on long downhills and not to go into overdrive on uphills, but it's still FAR from perfect and gives you zero control, just like the rest of them.

I should be getting my Xb soon, although I'm still caught up between buying it in 5sp or auto. 75% of me is saying to get the 5sp, 25% the auto. As of now my Scion rep has located a manual TCM for me(all he has is auto cars in stock) that I can have immediately, but my heart is set on the RS 2.0, if it's acquirable. Also, my first time driving it was an automatic car that I did get to drive for a little while, my initial impressions were driving locally, the automatic is fine. On the highway, it really feels like it runs out of breath quickly and realy needs to push to get up there. I know it doesn't have so much to do with the tranny as it does to the power of the car, but I figured the manual will at least "feel" more powerful. I'd also be driving it anticipating stop and go traffic, which is notorious on the highway that I take to get to work. I dono man, I'm still set on 5 sp, but there's still that chance of the last second switch..

If you are even a *slightly* aggressive driver or you are the type of person who will take your car out for a drive *just* because you love to drive it, then I think you need to get the manual.
If you're more of a point "A" to point "B" kind of person and dread the idea of having to shift in traffic, then maybe an automatic could be what you're looking for.
I would definitely take the manual for an extended test drive before deciding on an automatic, if you think you're about to go that way.
Let us know what you do and post some pics of your cool new ride!

sorry should contribute...
but like ppl have said...
I view the xB as a practical car... not a sporty one ...
so auto is fine... its a people lugger...
If I want something sporty I might go with the xA or tC.
That said auto tranny needs some serious help... so the little power mods add up and hopefully bring it on par with a manual.
Yeah grade logic would've been nice... but I don't find it so hard to pop the O/D button on or off...

Hi,
My xB has the 5 speed, and while it is fun to drive, it REALLY needs a 6th gear/OD to bring the 65+ mph revs down. I know this is on another topic thread, but I can't remember where I saw it last week when I found this site.
Short of that, for maximum gas mileage, I would think a taller tire (don't go shootin me) within the physical limits of the vehicle height etc would go part way towards that goal. I think the xB should be able to see close to 40 mpg highway with a more firendly final gear in the tranny.
Point being that typically gas MPG for manuals that I have ever seen are several mps higher than an automatic tranny. Maybe that has changed of late with more automatic tranny science.
But this little engine with the right gearing should get 5 mpg better when highway revs are more like 2600 +/- instead of current 3500+
Now granted the real reason is probably the lawyers said some jerks will end up implanting themselves into a tree cause the engine winds out so nicely and that .6 (as quoted from that other tranny gear ration thread I referenced) would increase the top end speed much higher than they want to deal with; air resistance etc not being addressed here 8-) .

I just don't get why manufacturers do this...? maybe they're afraid the xB will do absolutely nothing if you step on the gas pedal when cruising at 65mph in a taller 5th or new 6th gear.

Simple, V8's have the low end torque and power to run at 2500RPM at 75-80 mph.
Teeny tiny 1.5 liters don't
You might notice that every car with an engine this small and a similar power-to-weight ratio roars along at a pretty high RPM on the highway. It's a necessary evil. Just look at the powerband of the car and see how much torque and horsepower is available at 2000-2500 RPM and you'll quickly realize why this ain't gonna happen.
I got used to it pretty quickly, most of us do.
That said, if it really makes you crazy, there is an option. You could swap in the final drive gearing from a Toyota Echo. I beleive it's about 3.90:1 vs. 4.30:1 for the xB. That would drop you a good 3-500 RPM at speed. Of course regular xB's and xA's will be kicking your a$$ in acceleration, but you will probably get better mileage.

IMO, the reason for it is that this car and the powertrain were designed for the AUTOMATIC. At normal freeway speeds, the auto is just cruising along. There was no stick option on the bB. When I bought my Echo, when they first came out, you couldn't get it in a stick. I think they tried to gear it differently than the Echo to give it more pep around town and at lower speeds, but I think they had to guesstimate on the right gearing. It's not easy to cover every point on the speedo, so they gotta pick the spots where it seems the most important. Even at the RPMs it's turning at freeway speeds in the stick, it's still being efficient and that's it's main objective. I don't think a 6th gear would help much. It wouldn't have hardly any pull, you'd constantly be pulling out of it to accel.
And yes, they are afraid there won't be any punch and people will complain about that as well. You can't please everyone...

I guess I could be like most of you people who picked autos on here, talk on my phone, eat, fondle my girl...etc. but that defeats the whole purpose of driving, actually paying attention to the road. People who pick an auto so they can "multi-task" shouldn't be allowed to drive in the first place. :come:
