View Full Version : clear vinyl protectant
GT4Dreams 01-08-2006, 04:59 AM I know that people have had good experiences with rockblockers, but what about the stuff coming out on ebay? I seriously want to know what the difference would be. Even if it's not 100% true fit, I don't think it would be that huge of a difference if it's 1-2 mm off the edge or what not. It would still serve it's purpose, correct?

and what about this rip-off rear bumper applique?

Just wanted to know your opinions. It seems that the applique is square, so I was thnking of getting one and putting it on the front bumper. It would serve a purpose and also have the ghosted scion.
Comments and opinions.
ScionLawyer 01-08-2006, 05:23 PM I had the 3M Clearbra professionally installed on my car. It was really expensive (like $500+). I watched the guy install it. It took quite a while because of the thickness of the clear bra and heating it so it adhered around all of the corners. I would suspect the stuff on ebay is so thin that a rock would cut right through it. Therefore, it would not likely serve the purpose intended. Just my opinion.

GT4Dreams 01-09-2006, 04:42 AM If you go to your local reputable dealership, or a reputable shop, they probably have someone or hire someone to do their vinyls.
SciontCya 01-09-2006, 04:48 AM Thanks!
Anyone have any pix of this installed?

An independent installer in the Cleveland area. He actually came to my home and did the install in my garage. I found him from the 3M clear bra web site. I just looked up authorized installers in my zip code.
rjj130 01-11-2006, 03:05 AM I have a clear bra from Madico...as shown in my signature.
I had a local guy do it for me...entire front, up 8 inches on the hood, around the front fender, behind the wheel wells (instead of mudguards), and on the side mirrors all for $600...
Great investment if you ask me...mine came w/ 10 year warranty.
SciontCya 01-11-2006, 03:31 AM I don't mind paying. I emailed 3M on thier kit and their LA guy "broke his arm" and is out for a while.
I need to see this in person first tho.
10-year warranty is good - assuming they are still around.

I personally don't trust ebay, to many lowlives with crap products.
SCIONyd_tC 01-13-2006, 01:55 AM i reallly want rockblocker - (no $$$ right now) but i dont really trust the ebay stuff. and dont want to install it - im lucky im in phx, Chad (Rockblocker.com) is here to install it .
IbRtC 01-14-2006, 06:56 PM Personally I dont see the purpose for these types of mods, This is like people who leave the plastic sticker on the cell phone screen for ever. My way of thinking is this... If you put it on to protect the car, Well once a rock hits it... what will you do ? Its still going to look like a rock hit it...Are you then going to replace the vinyl and pay another 500+ to have it restored.
Like I said with the cell phone example you leave it on so that it doesnt look scratched and ugly yet the sticker looks horrible... I dont understand it, honestly no disrespect but I cant justify the price of these types of things.
I could see my self doint it to the headlights but that easy and inexpensive to replace and actually does protect the most fragile part of the vehicles front.
SciontCya 01-14-2006, 07:00 PM I think that if you spend a lot of time on the freeways where the most damage seems to get done, then it's worth the protection cost.
This stuff is meant to stay on, as opposed to your analogy of the cell-phone which is only meant to stay on until someone buys it.
I've put on screen-proteectors on my Blackberries and SONY PSP which look great and do a great job of keeping the screens clear - iPods too.

Sure I totally agree, but now we are talking about low cost.
SciontCya 01-14-2006, 09:11 PM It all comes down to cost for everything we do...
You are the only one who can decide based on your cash flow and value added.
I agree, it's not cheap, but I'd have to see this in person to commit to a $600 install.
