Default TRD exhaust rusting?

I just installed a TRD exhuast onto my 06 tC. I'm a bit worried that it might rust by the change in weather. Anyone have any experience with the rusting of exhaust pipes?

I thought it was all stainless steel? It shouldn't rust.

Dont worry about it. The muffler will be fine, the other piping will most likely rust.

yeah...it'll be fine, the only residue that it seems to show are the exhaust debris on the steel. you can just wipe it off while you do your car wash.

By the time an exhaust system rusts it's time for a new one anyways.

The TRD parts are stainless - they can discolor, but not rust.
As was said, the rest can and will.

Stainless steel is not rust proof, it is very rust resistant. It will eventually develop surface rust, but is highly unlikely to rust through for the life of the car. The salt and mineral exposure combined with the heat of an exhaust system will make even the highest grades of stainless steel (304, 316 etc.) rust a little. Its nothing to worry about. Just stay away from 409 stainless steel.

Hmm. I've never seen true stainless rust - it can gather corrosion and gunk from the road, but never seen it rust, and I have had stainless exhausts on almost all of my motorcycles.
I can only imagine cheap, Taiwanese-made "stainless" having these sorts of issues, but if you have more on this, I'm all ears...

i use eagle one never dull pollish on my TRD exaust. it costs a few dollars at walmart. it comes in a silver can. it works pretty good, even on the little tar spots that get on the tip. all you have to do is rub it on and take it of with a microfiber towel.

Depends on the series or alloy of Stainless...YES some will rust, some will not...Some is even magnetic, some is not. It all depends on the alloy. I think most of the automotive stuff is T-304 SS, but you would have to ask the manufacturer to be certain. T-304 shouldn't rust, or at least it won't look like the rust on mild steel.

I have rust on mine, on the tip. I am going to call the dealer since it has not been a year since it was installed.

The sytem itself is made out of 304 alloy polished aluminum, not a steel or nickel plated alloy...true aluminum. The hanger rods are made of 409 stainless steel, to be a bit stronger. The only thing with the 304 is that it seems to heat tint failry easily, as some of you might have noticed, an almost brown "glaze" over the polish.

Aluminum does not rust, but it will corrode.

I dont know what the tip is made out of...

^^^ I really have to disagree. No such thing as 304 aluminum. They don't make ANY exhaust components out of aluminum (except for dirtbikes maybe). It can't hold up to the heat. If it is a 304 series, then it is Stainless Steel. You can polish SS to look like a mirror, so if you think it's aluminum because it's shiny...

Some stainless does rust like mild steel(the 4 series I think). ALL metal rusts (known as oxidation) including copper, aluminum, stainless, brass bronze, steel...but it may not look like the rust we all are familiar with.

If it was aluminum, it would probably be a 6061 T-6, but I assure you it IS NOT.

Also, if it were aluminum, you wouldn't be able to weld the 409 stainless hangers to it. Aluminum and SS don't mix.

Oh boy...this thread is really off.

My bike has an aluminum exhaust.
All metals do NOT rust.
Oxidation is not rust.
The hangars are hooks, not welded.
The TRD is stainless - stainless, not aluminum.

Thanks for correcting me on some of my points. And as stated,

I did say they used aluminum on bikes( I know...I said dirtbikes, but I figured you would know what I meant)...just not cars is what I meant.

All metals oxidize. Rust is a form of oxidation (I got the two flipped around in my last post)...look it up.

Although I don't ave a TRD exhaust, my 'hangers' are welded right to my muffler...thats why I said what I did about the 409 ones being welded.

You can't say something with emphasis like "all metals rust" and then come back and say "look it up" because you "flipped" and make me look like I don't know what I'm talking about...

Hangars are the hooks used to connect the pipes to the frame. Mounting brackets are on the pipes/cans to connect the hangars.
As far as I can see under my tC, the TRD is all stainless. The hangars (hooks) are likely just steel of some sort.

My street bikes have Al exhaust. Exhaust doesn't get nearly hot enough to hurt those pipes - but we're not talking headers here...just the cans. The TRD is just the can and axle-back, so it can be made of Al with no troubles, but it's not

Yeah. You are right. I was correcting MYSELF when I resaid things in different words.

No biggie...I know that a little "rust" shouldn't alarm anyone.

To the above poster....I did not try to make you look like you didn't know anything, but really, thats what you did to me...so I had to re-phrase a couple things only to correct myself. I never really countered anything that you already stated and really don't see the need to get on me in your last post or the one before. I never said YOU were wrong, you know?

Lighten up a bit...I was just trying to tell these people that it wasn't aluminum and that depending on the cheap alloy used, it CAN "rust"....
