Default down shift on an auto...

ok, so wen im on the freeway, going around 65MPH, i like to shift from D to D3... by doing this, the engine downshifts and RPM goes from near 3000 to 4000 and i have very good passing power. my question is, is this good for the engine? well maybe not good but is it super bad for the engine or trans?? or is this perfectly ok to do?? thanks in advance

Why don't you just step on the gas..? Autos downshift on their own.

theres no reason to be turning the overdrive off. if you step on the gas, the ECU will realize that you want the extra power and the transmission will downshift for you.

I suppose its not hurting the engine, but it is unnecessary and a bad habit to get into.

I wouldn't recommend that... I use to shift manually in my old automatic buick and soon enough i need to get a new transmission or extensive work to repair the damage... i forget which, its been a while.

Downshifting in an automatic is more for like when you're going dwn a hill or something and need the extra power to brake i think...not meant for just driving.
