If people are gonna complain about the turbo not being in the US yet, they can go buy some other company's turbo kit.

Personally, I trust a brand name like TRD over some other companies. 8)

I just noticed this. Anyone noticed the grille on the Turbo bB? The area by the right side of the grille. It has a passthrough...hhmm air is rushing in straight through there I take it :D No hood scoop intercooler for the bB

Haha, that video looks like two shoeboxes being pushed down a hill. These things look so funny when raced.

So......obviously that is made for the bB. But........does anyone know how hard it would be to convert a bB kit to work on an xB? Cause I know a guy that can apparently import Japanese parts for pretty cheap. I'm just wondering if it would be anything that was worth the effort.

you know we would have to upgrade our transmission after a turbo installed. Or else we would be shifting though the gears every 2 seconds after every boost! Our trannys are geared low so we totally need a tranny upgrade, I am still down for the turbo though! Can't wait for it to arrive. :D

No, that's 150ps at the crank. Or roughly 148hp at the crank. The TRD kit adds 41ps to a stock 109ps bB. Japan rates in PS, America rates in HP.

I thought about ordering the TRD kit, but there are some problems when installing it on a US xB. First is the the ECU. TRD mapped it for Japanese gas, which is about 95 octane, which means I would have to run a race gas mix every day. No way. Second is the price. I don't care if it's TRD or not. $6K is way too high for 40hp, any way you look at it.

If it's $6K above the retail price, it may not just be a turbo bolt-on. For Toyota to do it right, they should change the suspension, brakes and the motor (lower compression, forged lower end and FI mods). If they did make those wholesale changes, then $6K might be justified.

Having said that, I'm still of the opinion that one could wring out another normally aspirated 50HP for the price of a bolt-on turbo. I'm still waiting for some of the Scion tuners to tackle that job to see what's possible. 8)

In reality, the trd bb isn't a "kit" it's a package that you buy at the dealer. You may be interested to know that it still uses the same 10.5:1 compression ratio (looks like they got the head design right!) It uses a different ECU etc, but injectors, etc are the same, no kludge-fix extra injector in the intake tract like in several trdusa's supercharger kits. Trust and Greddy and one other make aftermarket kits for the bb in europe. Yes it will come here. No idea if toyota has the cajones to bring it themselves.

The kit itself should cost about 5500 US dollars, if I buy it in Japan. This is without any discount, or price reduction. Seeing as I have a couple friends over there, I might be able to get it for less.

In terms of the Ecu problem, there is a place called Toyota Modellista/TRD right across the street from where I am staying. They do tons of custom work on Minivans, sport compacts, etc.... and they might be able to do something with the ecu so that the turbo kit will work on the US xB. It's worth a try. Now all it depends on how busy I am with work and a little thing called dinero!

or just get the kit, an apex-i s-afc and tune the system on a dyno in the usa and post the additions to fuel.

when you're already paying 5000 dollars for a turbo kit, another 200-300 is nothing for an s-afc.

I have been told that we can expect the Turbo from TRD in November along with the Super Charger for the TC..No word on pricing yet..I'm sure it won't be cheap..I have heard it's a Garrett T25 w/ intercooler and ecu..Detail are still kind of vauge..

Sigh... The T-25... also known as the T-toosmall... There are so many more turbo options out there... yet everyone insists on using that POS. I'm glad I've got a 14B in my Talon (SC1 60-1 coming soon :D )

Well really in this insist is it that bad? This is a small engine we are talking about. Plus if it is small won't it turn faster and have less lag?

We hang out w/ Paul from TRD and he told us that the production kit Turbo will probably be out by Oct. or NOv. if not sooner(wishful thinking), They have been pushed by Toyota corp. to put out the supercharger for the tc or the kit for the xB & xA would have been out already. The first kit will probably be put on his xB. I'm patiently waiting for it myself.

So this will be a thing for both cars? I just wanna make sure since the xA doesn't seem to get as much love.

i happened to get a scion fat-mag from my salesman. it featured a camo green xb with a trd "prototype" turbo set-up. no specs, no pics (of engine bay)..... but it did say in bold trd prototype turbo at the top of the page. the next page was a primer black xA w/ some cheesey decals... but who cares about the xA?? jk....

T-25 (t-too-small) in a 2.0 liter engine runs out of airflow at high boost and high RPM. Neither scenarios would be the case in the 1.5 liter, unless you reduce the compression a LOT and increase the rev limit to around 10,500RPM.

2.0L@8000rpm (approv rev limit of the 4G63 engine)=1000L consumed per minute (one cylinder fills every other rotation) compare to the 1.5L ingesting 750L at the same RPM, and it redlines much lower than the 4G63 (6500)

The t-25 runs out of flow over 16PSI at high rpm, but it really spools much faster than the 14B it replaced, thus 0-60 times on stock vehicles were quicker and faster with the smaller turbo. Its when modders like us get into things that its limits become apparent. When I looked at compressor maps before the discussion of which turbo, I picked the t-25 as the best to fit the operating ranges that would constitute a "bolt on" installation. If you want a bigger turbo, then there are a lot of other things you need to be changing at the same time to take advantage of the larger turbo. Something I don't really think most people buying these cars are willing to do, as it would put you into the price territory of you should have bought a different vehicle to begin with. I run a "green" FP turbo on my own talon, its got scalded-ape accelleration over 4000RPM, but for a daily driven vehicle, the lag wouldn't be my choice of turbo. I may be running 3000rpm at highway speeds, I think its lower than that though, so acceleration? Heh, none unless I downshift to third.

I'm looking to switch to one of the "ballistic" turbos at a later date, for now I'm stuck with what I have. Its all a compromise. There is no free lunch. The t-25 would be a nice transparent turbo to put on this engine, unless you were making a trailer queen and not a daily driver.

Mike
