View Full Version : Poormans Intake Revisited ! !

New Design on the Setup Still costs under 30 bucks to make and about an hours time.
As you can see it uses the factory intake tube. There is no hacking or modifications of the factory airbox or intake . Just remove and store in a box. { i know alot of people like myself do not like to modify or hack up factory parts to prevent future use }

If anyone is interested on the how to, say I and I will be glad to post the breakdown with pictures.

Very nice, but be verrrrry careful about oiling that filter. You've got the MAF sensor very close to the filter, and it takes only one drop of oil to screw it up!

Awesome job! Kind of looks like my Blitz Shortram, too, but probably with a more thorough filter. I'd love to see how you did it, looks super stock (in a good way!) :D

How does it sound and perform?

there shouldn't be a check engine light because the blitz is the same way also and sounds great. The only down side I see is the fact that the air going in might be a bit hot. But still a cool modd. :D

An easy way to get cold air would be to open a duct from the top "grille" to an airbox around the filter. This would be a better place to get cold air than in front of the front wheel near the pavement!

Sort of what I did with mine. I haven't replaced the stock air filter (yet), but did tinker around with the intake hose to the airbox. I took it off, and routed a section of 3" aluminum ducting from the airbox inlet to the middle grill, right next to the horn. I had to bend the horn bracket slightly in order to get the hose around it, and the hose opening is right behind the driver's side edge of the middle grill. So the airbox is now getting nice cold outside air force-fed into it. I did the same thing with an SRT-4 I used to own.

The short-ram intakes you see out there, while looking cool, still draw in warm air from the engine compartment, which is not a good thing. For the xB, I've seen some of the "cold-air intake" systems that have the filter at the end of some longer intake tubes, and position the filter in the vicinity of the battery, fender, etc. If you really want to get some cold air, you need to position the filter or hose towards the front end of the car, where it can draw in the cooler outside air.

The INJEN short ram does that... it places the filter away from the engine.. under the headlight where it can draw in cold air.

So the short ram technically, is a CAI....

Did some extensive searching, and found out that he just cut off the tip of the stock intake hose, removed the stock filter, and attached an APC filter onto the end. . . not what I'm looking for.

Yeah this mod I did was diffrent than the one with just moddifying the stock air box this eliminated the box completly and mounted a cone style filter in the area where the stock box use to be with the maf directly behind it . I removed this setup because it was just way to loud, the thing screamed at any rpm over 3500.

atleast tell us how you did it.

All parts came from the local ace hardware. You need two pieces of 2 inch pvc pipe about 2 inches long, 2 sheet metal screws & a 2 1/2 inch rubber connector { i dont know what to exactly call it but they have them near the pvc pipe stuff in every hardware store } do not attempt to go bigger on the tube the car will not idle trust me I tried it already.

I always love the look of this set up but I dont trust this design it puts the maf to close to the filter area I ran this for about 2 months without a problem but I just didnt feel comfortable with it. I since have instaled the AEM CAI. The pic should give u an idea of how its done.
