Hey, Just wondering if anyone has any new information about replacing the LCD screens in the center console. It looks like I am one of the many who broke it during the LED change.
Isn't there something all of us can do or somewhere we can all call do get these damn things? Seems to me there are alot of us with broken screens. Maybe if there are enough of us, they will start selling them seperately. I don't know if anyone got this far yet, but let me hear if anyone has any info about this!

They wont sell them seperately.
I just found one for someone who broke theirs doing the center console conversion. From salvage you can find the HVAC module for about $150. Since I wanted another testing board for some other mods I bought it and just sold him the LCD. But I really dont need another right now. So for now your choices are finding a salvage HVAC module and taking the LCD or buying it from toyota for about $350.

Check out online salvage places, you might even be able to get a banged up HVAC unit with a LCD screen intact. I was able to pick one up for about $70, including shipping. That, and I learned to have more patience the next time, hehehe.

LOTs of patience with solder wick will do it. You should be able to turn the board over and the LCD will fall out into your hand when you are done desoldering. If you have to tug at ALL you need to desolder more. If you have a dual wattage iron I reccomend the 35 - 40 w setting with solder wick to remove it. Do pins on opposited ends and keep moving around so you dont heat one area too much. Also, it should take more than one pass to get it all on each pin, dont try to pull all the solder from one pin at once. The solder goes all the way through. If you try to get it all at once, the contact and pin will heat up to the same temp as the solder wick, so the wicking will stop. Also, you are likely to overheat and damage the contact pad, or even worse, crack the LCD due to overheating it.

Goto http://car-part.com/ and do a search for 2005 Scion tC Heater /AC Control. You will receive the entire heater/ac assembly. Either you use the one u get, or solder out the LCD and put it on urs.
It was a pain for me to try and take out the LCD again so i just used the one i got from car-part.com
I got my replacement unit for like 49 with shipping, like 6 months ago. I think theyre cheaper now, Ive seen some for $30.

Thanks alot... I just called the dealership today and was speachless after they told me it would cost $600 for the replacement. There is no way in hell i would pay $600 for a 3 x 2" LCD screen.

They are charging you for the whole unit, but they still overpriced it. MSRP for it is approx. $350.
I have NEVER seen one for $39, or less than $100 even. I will check car part.com next time someon requests it. But last time I looked on there it was over $200.

Scroll to the next pages after you make a search and you'll see (sometimes) some units for under $50 and some even ask you to call.
Mine was listed for 35, I got it shipped for under $50 (49 and change). If you call, some of them probably have it cheaper, you just need to call.
Call to make sure the part your ordering doesnt have a cracked screen and it shouldnt be a problem. I called to order mine and asked the guy to even describe the unit in detail. I couldnt believe he was gonna send something that the dealer was charging $544 for.
When i got it in the mail, I just swapped it with my broken unit and installed it to my tC and have been using it ever since.

Anybody has an extra stereo cover assembly. I am sure that if you bought the whole HVAC unit you have no need for it once you removed the LCD. I'll give you $20 + shipping for it. Better then throughing it away. PM me.

If the salvage knows their parts you wont recieve that part. HVAC unit does not include the bezel and stereo door, just the book-sized module. If someone gets lucky they may recieve one. If the one I ordered for someone includes it I may be willing to sell that part as well. I will let you know.

If all you are looking for is the LCD screen, check the ones that are not in the best shape, confirm that the lcd is not cracked, and you can get quite a deal. Mine also included the radio door cover, but it was really beat up. Just keep looking if you don't see one at a price you are willing to pay, as I'm sure they will fluctuate from time to time.

I have recieved full HVAC unit with the door assembly at some point but I was stupid enough to through it away
Did not realize that I might need one for one of my little projects.

Don't you hate doing that. I keep everything and every once in a while, I will thin it out and trash things. Then...because I believe god has a sense of humor....you need what you just threw away as the trash man drives off.

Or you're totally the nicest man ever and just send me the extra things that I messed up and need new ones of :)
=the awesomest thing EVER...makes most of the pins only take 1 pass for the uber impatient people among us(me).

I just noticed the other day, while doing the LED mod that my LCD screen had a crack in it. But it HAD to have been there before, we did nothing to it but pull it out, and in the process of turning it over, back and forth, we noticed the black liquid leaking through. Will this be covered by my warranty? Especially since I didn't do anything (we didn't swap the LED's on it, so it could be taken to the dealer).

nope... not under warranty.... you have had to have cracked it when you took it out... otherwise it would've been black and not working before you did....
which i'm guessing it wasn't... until you pulled it apart. it's more fragile than most people imagine.

It isn't black, and it still works. there's a small line in it; anything left of that line (the AC/Heat level) won't show.
SquallLHeart
11-21-2006, 01:02 AM
was it like that before?
sometimes after a little while.. the blackness does go away... but the fact remains... the screen is damaged.
dunno what to say... you're gonna have to pay to get a new one.

Well, there was always a small "blemish" and i didn't think about it. Once it was moved around, it started "oozing" through. Either way, I'm taking it to the dealer since the car is only 6 months old, and it needs oil change and what not, as well.

If you take it apart, I bet the crack starts at about the 5th pin or so (starting from the left and counting to the right) on the LCD, and runs in a curved path upwards. I have had 6 people send me boards that they cracked LCD screens on, and I think 4 of them had that same exact crack in them. Strange that it would be in the same place that often, but that is what I see. The fan indicator will either not work, or will only display one bar. Nothing else to the left will display. If the dealer does not fix it, car-part.com is your friend. Make sure if you have an 07 to get an 07 board. They changed it that year.

That's about where mine is I think. And I have an 06. if the dealer doesn't fix it, then i don't mind paying $50 for a new one through car-part.com....

Woooo, the dealer is going to take care of EVERYTHING-totally under warranty. my advice, if you're gonna break the clock, do it within 6 months and 5000 miles of owning the car.
