View Full Version : is 2500 dollars stupid to spend for custom turbo with 144whp
fusionscion 01-31-2006, 02:03 PM hey what do you think about this... i am gettinga custom turbo kit with a dynoed 144whp and no problems for 2500 brand new... is this worth it, or should i invest in coilovers and 19" rims instead? let me know yall i would have a quick box.... thx- peter
stick_1NZ 01-31-2006, 02:31 PM I'd say spend it on something else. get the coils and wheels. the box is not intended to be quick. it's all fo' sho' but no go.
ctruss 01-31-2006, 02:36 PM I didn't know you could dyno a turbo, I thought they had to be on a car.
fusionscion 01-31-2006, 02:36 PM id really like to turbo it though, and comparing videos of the kit on the box to my 0-60 and 60-80 times, it would smoke me..... im not sure, im really leaning towards the kit, and would score major show points on the street and at shows.....
spidur1 01-31-2006, 03:01 PM Where do you get a turbo kit for an XB? Do you have to install it yourself?
glen619 01-31-2006, 03:41 PM I didn't know you could dyno a turbo, I thought they had to be on a car.
I think when anyone says "dynoed at .... " it is implied that it was on a car when dynoed. WHP means "wheel horsepower," so I would think it was dynoed on a car.
ctruss 01-31-2006, 04:44 PM I know, just trying to be silly.
I'm actually looking into S/C my xB. I am gonna put something together myself though using a Lysholm blower, also known as a G-ladder, the kind of blower found on the VW G60 motor.
The main reason is the wow factor. A Lysholm blower is many times more efficient that other S/C's, but still not as efficient as a turbo. Where the wow factor comes in is the noise these things make.
You start your car up and even at an idle the blower puts out a howling noise that is louder than the engine. When you are crusing down the street and kick it down it sounds like you have a damn fire engine siren under your hood. Oh its a glorious sound.
JSosa 01-31-2006, 06:19 PM Those G-ladder blowers are knows to blow up and kill your timing belt, so im not so sure about them. I know because ihad a friend with a G60 Corrado and it was fast but if your not careful with the blower and the timing belt, KABOOM!!! and bye bye scion.

It sounds to me like you already know what you want. Just do it. Extra power is always good. Turbos are rare on these cars so that would make yours unique. That's a good price from what I've seen. You can get rims anytime.

I wouldnt touch anything from a Corrado G60 with a 40 ft pole. Those blowers are known for screwing up.
ctruss 02-01-2006, 09:46 PM I'm not talking about using a G60 from a Coraddo. There is a place called Bahn Brenner that makes G-Ladder S/C's that are far more reliable and more efficient than VW's G60 S/C.
Simplyscion 02-01-2006, 10:50 PM Tell me exactly what will be included in the $2500 and I will tell you if its worth it or not...take it from someone who has done this already :lalala:
fusionscion 02-03-2006, 03:55 AM garrett t3 turbo, tubular exhaust manifold, chrome heat shield, downpipe w. gasket, raptor box, custom high flow front mount intercooler, polished aluminum intercooler piping, ss braided lines for oiling, return hose and fittings for oil to pan, all hoses and clamps, all necessary hardware and fittings, and instructions, and gauge for psi readings
Simplyscion 02-03-2006, 02:01 PM so whats the raptor box...you mean raptor bov?? What about fuel management and your other gauges, like a wideband, oil pressure, water temp etc.
fusionscion 02-13-2006, 05:55 PM well from what he said.. no injectors needed... he has 144 wheel horse power at 4.5 psi, and i would need to get a clutch and a downpipe fabricated... when he said that he pulled my interest away... what do yall think
Simplyscion 02-13-2006, 06:03 PM sounds like to me you would be the first 1nz he has ever messed with...I wouldnt let that guy touch my car if I were you before you end up with a big problem on your hands.
Xbilly 02-13-2006, 06:09 PM This 2500 sounds like if you were to complete the project properly you'd be in the range of 3500. still sounds worht it to me if you're really getting 144 whp
fusionscion 02-13-2006, 08:35 PM ya im thinking that too.. so ya can anybody say greddy s/c... or air bags? im so torn ya guys, nobody has any idea... i have enough to do one of these mods.. should i go for speed or for show... is the greddy s/c loud... windy or whatever? let me know what your .2 cents is.... thx a lot
fusionscion 02-14-2006, 01:25 AM  muhahaha im falling for the greddy supercharger right now... and with a price tag of 2g, i just fell, :P
Xbilly 02-16-2006, 03:32 AM I hear its pretty quiet, get it.
fusionscion 02-16-2006, 01:26 PM i heard that too... i want to hear a sound clip or suttin of it running... what i hear is that is whines after 4000 rpm... true?
Sciond 02-18-2006, 04:45 AM hmmmm
UncivilizedRacer 02-28-2006, 08:08 AM Go turbo! More power!
lastlookcustoms 03-16-2006, 01:45 PM You will NEVER get that much power out of that amount of boost...
siopaojoe 03-18-2006, 08:28 AM Actually you would with that oversized turbo but there would be absoluetely NO torque what so ever.
At 7lbs that turbo does 165whp and 135lbs of torque were as a proper sized t28 will put you in the 145whp, 150lbs torque......on an xB
lastlookcustoms 03-18-2006, 02:30 PM And where would this turbo be mounted? You can barely stuff the T20 back there. I dont think that T3 would fit between the motor and the firewall. It would have to sit up on top and then the hood wont close.
black2doorecho1nz 03-21-2006, 05:21 AM It depends if yuu like show or go . Personaly i like the go but if you don't plan on racing light to light and just want to look the part then spend the cash on rims and other bling bling.
