Last one of those beaters I got was from Sound Ford in Renton in '97 - it was a trade-in with high miles but a very nice body. It was considered a 'back row car' by the dealership. I got it for under $1000, and ran it for 3 1/2 years with few problems. I sold to a gal who needed a cheap, solid car, and it's still running her around town. It was an '89 Escort 4 speed hatch. When I sold it, it had 164,000+ miles on it, a new clutch and new tires (and still looked good!). (I sold it to her for $6.)
Many new car dealerships have 'back row cars' that they want to just get rid of. Many can be had for a reasonable price, "as is."

Here is another reference. If he is interested he could go down to Tacoma this Saturday at 6 and catch the public car auction. It is hosted by Taylor Auctions and you can find a large variety of cars to choose from. They are right off of Steele Street and you can get their address and check out their items for sell at Taylorsauction.com
Hope this helps.
