View Full Version : looking to go turbo but have some concerns
MicaTc 02-02-2006, 05:45 PM i am looking into going with some type of turbo setup on my tc...but with every idea i also have many concerns...my first concern is that what is the "safest" turbo setup? i mean by which would be the safest setup without beefing up internals??? my next concern is passing my state emissions test...i live in NYS and there emissions are brutal when you try to go turbo....so are there any kits that wont throw a CEL? any help would be great
MIAPLAYA 02-02-2006, 05:55 PM Well one option would be the Turbonetics Tc kit. It isshipped with a VERY safe tune out of box yet still provides adequate power. With the inclusion of the Unichip EMS no CEL is thrown by installing the kit. Furthermore should you need to roll on an emissions dyno Turbonetics has an optional downpipe with a cat on it to make sure you pass the sniffer. At 8 PSI of boost on 91 pump gas you can expect 244 WHP and 262 ft/lb of tq. All the while keeping the completely safe. The two Turbonetics Scions have been raced at the track, driven daily, street raced, drag raced, you name it and never once had a problem.

check it out..it does not throw a CELL at all . Read up on it. That is my car in the pics. My car drives like a dream and you really cant tell its turbo charged until you get on the gas and i love it.

COmpany has been around for a bit.
Its at 8 psi with good gains.
a/f ratio isn't leaned out too much.
They are trying to get CARB certified So that takes care of your emissions questions.
Other than turbonetics. the only other company I'd purchase a turbo kit from that has reliability, performance, and emissions all wrapped up in thier turbo kit is Greddy or maybe HKS.
But HKS made a kit for the Nitto tC and I don't think they are going to produce thiers. and the Greddy kit is still pending carb approval i think b4 they will release it.

also how many miles did you have when you installed the kit?

TimmyT 02-02-2006, 06:20 PM any turbo kit will void your warrenty if its not a toyota genuine part and installed by a certified toyota mechanic.
But it has to be the CAUSE of the problem. If you transmission falls out because toyota didn't tighten a bolt right or something and it wasn't the turbo's fault AND you can prove it. It is still covered in your warrenty.

thats what i like to hear...i have a shop near me who does some qulaity work with installing turbo kits....will this kit require anything else? like any upgrades?
BigPinoyTC 02-02-2006, 06:40 PM The car has about i would say close to 800 miles on the car, and those were 800 hard driven miles. I drove it really hard on the expressway and even hard at stop lights. Trust me this kit is it. Not only that but if you wanted more power just tune it a lil more.

BigPinoyTC 02-02-2006, 06:43 PM the kit comes with everything you need and want and the good thing about this kit is that is has many options for you for ex. what color coating on pipes and much much more dress up and performance parts.
TheQuietThings 02-02-2006, 06:45 PM If you want a fast car that passes NYS emissions, i would suggest the TRD SC. I know its not a turbo, but the emissions test here are extremely strict, they video tape your inspection and send them to albany to be check.

since you installed the turbo kit, have you had any good runs?
MIAPLAYA 02-02-2006, 07:10 PM Likewise with the Turbonetics kit more power is a dyno session away. Another nice feature from Turbonetics is ther No fault/ No hassle warranty on the entire kit. Even if you wreck your car and get a new one Turbonetics will replace whatever part of the was damaged for you for FREE. No cost. Not to mention the warranty on the manifold which is huge.

Olomoco 02-02-2006, 08:16 PM I have a turbo by TBKPerformance working at 9 PSI and it is amazing. Right know my set up has a complete different exhaust which probably will not past the emmision test, but before changing the exhaust I had my car at 8 PSI and very well tunned with a haltech fuel management system, I really thing this setup will work for you. Check out my turbo setup on cardomain and contact TBKperformance.net for some quotes, ask for Manuel Oviedo, he is preatty cool and he will answer a lot of your questions!

it seems like the safer setup, since it includes injectors and an intercooler. oh and an ecu.

Our stage 1 kit includes all of that. Injectors w/ clips, Emanage with a solid tune pre-loaded, and FMIC.

kungpaosamuraiii 02-02-2006, 10:19 PM But honestly speaking, if you have to ask these questions, the TRD supercharger is the best way to go. You can't always depend on a mechanic to diagnose a problem that comes out of nowhere, especially when you're in the middle of nowhere!
Less things can go wrong with the supercharger since it comes with a reflash rather than a piggyback.
|
