I just want to vent. I was going to work today(500am) on 101 South and in Redwood city when this truck felt taht i wasn't going fast enough at 80mph, so he decided to pass me up on the car pool lane and cut back over and he kicked up a rock and it scratched my hood and left a big crack on my windshield. BTW - this is my 2nd windshield. Now I'm ____ed, I sick of this car, might sell it. :(

May want to invest in a 'bullet proof' windshield. Just an idea.

Sounds like bad luck ... but ya better get used to it ... rocks don't glance off.. more like hitting a wall ... I still say they should make mud flaps manditory for any vehicle with more than 8 inches of ground clearance ..at least it would reduce the ammount of kickup ...

or learn to drive!!!

give the trucks a 'clean' lane to pass you. don't be a left lane hog and force trucks and cars to go into the 'dirty' areas of the road.
don't try telling me that at 5am that you couldn't move over to just let the truck get by you.
i've had my box on the highway mostly 75-80 (just love the sound of my motor @ 4k)
no paint chips, window cracks and no dents. just lots and lots of damn bugs!!! (i just cursed myself by saying that)

am i lucky, well maybe.
or i know how to protect my box from these hazards.

it does suck and i do feel your pain.

anyone know if we can put like a clear bra on the windshield?

i think a vinyl layer would be able to absorb a lot of impacts.

I'm guessing not. Optical quality and soft... They do it in contact lenses, so why not? Call up Corning Inc and see if they'll make some. I'll be a distributor.

I don't care how defensively you drive, eventually its gonna happen. I commute the DC beltway everyday and I've already had safelight autoglass out to repair my windshield twice. The Xb is prone to windshield damage. Sooner or later, it will happen to the best of us, so get off your soapbox. :?

I travel 95 miles to and from work everyday in my Box on 795, 695, 97 and 50 and have yet to get a stone chip in the windshield or one in the paint (knock on formica  ).on two of these roads they are doing heavy construction (when aren't they :D ) and there is plenty of debris being kicked up, but if you maintain a safe distance from the vehicles ahead and drive smart you tend to avoid these projectiles.

The rake on this windshield in not as upright as everyone tend to believe. Have you seen a Wrangler windshield? Our windshields are no more upright than many of the older SUVs or full size vans out there.

I got a nice nick in my windshield the first week I owned the car...I guess it's the price I pay for living in SoCal and driving on the 605 freeway...Damn gravel trucks!!!

are all these broken/cracked windshields from xBs or both xAs and xBs?

Because if it's both, Toyota must be using really cheap glass for the Scion brands.

A while ago I headed out to the store and noticed another scratch on my driver side window just near the side mirror assembly...

Are these windows made of glass or cheap soft plastic???

If they do make it, I would be most interested in a purchase :D

Seems like all OEM windshields are pretty weak nowadays, not just Toyota's. My brother's 96 Civic HX got his after a couple years. My Mazda MP3's got shot a week after I bought the car, which I finally had it replaced today a year & a half later. I recently helped my girlfriend to get a xA. Let's hope that it'll last a good while. :?

Yeah, no kidding. I live in Bay Area, CA, and cracked windshields are common sites on streets & freeways. The roads don't seem to have a lot of gravel in general, but the rock chips happen more so than you would expect. Could be just that all car manufacturers just use cheap glass nowadays. :x

Thats gotta be true. I owned a 64 pontiac that I drove for 4 years when I lived in Cheyenne Wyoming (gravel treated roads in the winter) and that car had the original windshield with not a single crack in it. They dont make em like they used to. :?

They are definatley cheap, If you are driving on the highway with the window down a little look how much it wobbles. To be honest I am a bit scared when driving through the mountains here in MA with heavy wind I usually roll them all the way up just to play it safe.

And yes the paint is very cheap, you can tell there is very very little clearcoat applied as it gets scratches down to the primer with even minimal touches.

As far as the big trucks I do one of two things, either let them pass me and stay as far away as possible or zoom by them and get by as fast as I can.

If you keep a decent distance from them (40 ft?) if they do hit you they will not hit nearly as hard as if you are right on it a$$.

I think the windshield is made out of cheap glass!
I tapped a cd on ours today and chipped it like 3 times. I wasnt even hitting it hard!
I could take one to my SRT and break the CD before I will break or chip my windshield!
I think the glass sucks!

i know our windshileds are not bullet proof (might look into it) and they do/will get chips from time to time.

but back to the main part of this thread...the driver was/is an a$$hole

quote dchan... I was going to work today(500am) .... when this truck felt taht i wasn't going fast enough at 80mph, so he decided to pass me up on the car pool lane and cut back over

if you can't find a way to get over to let the truck pass (and he will sooner or later), and at 5am you can find a way, you deserve everything you get.

be glad the truck didn't do the 'swerve' and put you in the ditch.

just look at this story,
you move over to let the truck pass (you kick up debris in the trucks face) . the truck stays in his lane passes you in the clean roadway. you pull back in behind the truck no chips no venting no replacing anything (saves you time, money and bad stories).

trucks have 18 wheels to kick-up sh*t into your face, don't give them the opertunity.
