Default increasing MPG

obviously the scion is built to be modded, however, ive driven american cars before this, and cant stand the "wow" sound of the grapefruitshooting fartcannons that plague civics around the country. Im curious as to whether a new intake system and possibly a less restrictive exaust system will aid in fuel mileage, since efficiency is my main concern and not sound. if this does help fuel economy, is there an exaust system that doesnt sound like i drive a beater. Thanks for any help!

Default ....NO MOTE MTBA....

Yes this is the place for that exact type of exhaust concern. I still run stock exhaust, so I can't help you with any exhaust experience, but that will follow in posts after this one,
BUT I can promise you better gas mileage....
The federal government dropped it's requirement for that oxygenated or MTBA gassoline in the winter months in some states. Great news, that crappy MTBA (or whatever it was) was the worst cocktail of ineffective pollution ever to come out of washington.
Prices should go down and milage should go up.
Now I will watch for exhaust information.... I hate a fart can too.

What is the quietest aftermarket exhaust? I heard the Tanabe Super Medallion was quiet.

/\/\/\ true the TRD sounds almost stock but unsure if it flows any better either. I wish they could make an exhaust that gives max flow with the sound of stock.

I have heard the Tanabe in person on an Automatic xB and it was super quiet compared to other aftermarket exhausts. It was only a little bit louder than stock. That is the exhaust I am planning on getting for the wife's xB eventually.

My TRD exhaust is pretty loud. My wife followed me home from the dealership when I got my box and she said it was loud in her car lol. It does have a nice tone to it though and have gotten many comments from people (in many age groups, not just import fanatics) saying they like the sound from it.

I got an axle back off of ebay, and with the silencer in it isn't too loud, but you can definately hear it when you get on the throttle. As far as mileage goes, I get about the same.

So I put my car all back to stock to get a good mileage comparison, I'll let you know how much it changed...
