Default un bias Review of NST crank

i just got the pulley installed this morning for 30$ with my family mechanic. What can i say its been about a year since ive added anything to my car. When i first got it i added the i/h/e right away so i felt a huge difference then so i didnt get my hopes up.

1st gear has always reved up fast but it reved up quicker by a good amount....so....by the time i hit 2nd i was expecting the same thing, and not to my surprize it didnt. I mean dont get me wrong it revs up a little faster but nothing that really blows me back. The point of this review is not to kill NST/any other crank pulley but to bring down the hype because i really thought i was going to get that whole effect all across the board. Am i unhappy with my pulley? hell no, but i was expecting more which was due to the overhype of the crank pulley in general which lead me to make this thread. If you have 100-150 dollars laying around and want a mod that will give you a small add for a good price i recommend NST or any other pulley out there...

I will start off by saying, I am very biased!!! NST pulleys add power, they are some of the most well designed and high quality pieces available, NST has awesome customer service, they sell their stuff well bellow their competitions MSRP, and they build all their stuff here in the USA. Sorry if that leads me to be biased, but I am, and I'm proud of it!

That all out of the way, I agree. Maybe all of the great things having been said lately about these pulleys has led people to think they may be getting a magical item! As good as these things are, they are still pulleys.

Let's be honest, the often quoted "butt dyno" is very heavilly related to the human EAR! When you add an intake and gain 5hp, you also gain some extra sound. When you add an exhaust and gain 5hp, you also gain some sound to go with it. Your butt dyno feels a difference and most of us go, "yeah man, I feel it" Then you add a silent mod and maybe you are not as impressed. Maybe I am right, maybe I am way off...... but it sounds reasonable to me.

Bottom line- you spend 300 to 500, sometimes more, on an intake or exhaust to add 5 or 6 horsepower. You spend 100 dollars on a pulley to add 5 or 6 horsepower. Which is the real bang for the buck mod?

Good points hPower and I totally agree. To much missinformation going around like a pulley is this monsterous item than turns a normal car in to a wheel spinning monster.

The fact is a crank pulley, especially one like the NST is a power add on. When you are building an engine or a motor to perform, it is one peice of the puzzle that must be used in order to squeeze everything out of your engine. You put all the peices of that puzzle together and BANG! You have an engine that rips tons harder than what you had before.

In short, pulleys are a great addition and a must for any serious tuner. I highly reccomend them and I am also glad you had brains enough to choose a killer brand like NST which is now the only pulleys I will run.

Pulleys don't add any power at all. If they did, they would indeed be magic. They reduce rotating mass, which in turn allows the engine to produce higher numbers on a dyno. They may "liberate" power, but they don't make any-- at all. I won't get into the inherent risks, that topic has been beaten to death.

If you want to feel quicker revs across the band, in all gears, get a Fidanza flywheel.

^^^
yess very true

a reason why pulleys dont add HP is because HP is measured in the amount of air and fuel squeezed in a cylinder and ignited in turn producing power.

pulleys only make the movement of the crank easier thus making it feel lik more power but in reality, it did not add any more air and fuel into the cylinder.

correct me if im wrong :D

dont get me wrong i love my pulley and after driving it for 30 mins of pract. launching i realized one thing which im going to add here...
1. I no longer have to launch at 2300 rpm i launched at 2000rpm with ease and i swear on all that is holy that i didnt bog down nor did i peel out to much (just stupid 2nd gear)
BTW my exhaust tone changed a little (brother noticed it) is that normal. The thing i just wanted to point out is that yes i am VERY happy with my crank and plan on getting the alt. pulley soon, but people have really overhyped it. like i said before if have 100 laying around i say go for it...it adds as much as a intake for half the price

i agree with desertheat. and yes this topic has been beaten down. but if any of you have any questions or concerns, you can always talk to the NST rep on AIM. SN is NSTonAIM. he'll be more than happy to help you feel comfortable about there pulleys. i'm glad i chose NST, especially after hearing the prob. with the 1st crank pulley ZPI came out with.

I agree guys, The pulley is a power add on as in an addition just like a flywheel. Less rotation mass and the engine can do what it wants faster. The pulley does not make or add hp, simply releases what is being held back

I agree, but in theory, any of the bolt ons we add like intake, header and exhaust are not adding hp but in fact uncovering more of the potential the motor already had to begin with. To find the actual max HP output of our engines, it would need to be put on a dyno with no intake, straight pipes out of each exhaust port, no accessory drive system or extra weight attached to the crank and rev it to all hell. The only way to actually increase HP output is to do internal modifications such as higher compression ratio, cam swaps or head work.

So based on that logic, my car with X intake, Y header and Z exhaust doesnt have any more HP than stock, just more of the avialable HP has been brought to the surface by increasing the efficiency of the air moving through the motor which was not allowed with the stock components.

Basically, the pullies make HP the same way any of the other bolts ons do.

A nice theory, but wrong nonetheless. Intake/exhaust allows more air flow, which in turn requires more fuel, which = more output. Any mod done that alters the amount of fuel a motor consumes at a given RPM adds or removes power. A pulley cannot possibly do this. The motor can spin more freely due to rotating mass, but this in no way increases the actual output of the motor.

I have a feeling that this is going to be beaten to death.
My personal opinion (Which means nothing) is the pulleys are a nice add on to try to get your motor to do the max amount of power, at the quickest response to your right foot. I plan on adding the pulleys as the final piece on my Motor. I think you will notice more of a difference after the S/C or Turbo is on our 2.4L. Just my .02

Please don't bash me too bad
