Default GEAR LAG when engine temp light is blue

Every day I begin driving my xB RS 2.0 while the engine temp light is blue, the engine lags for like 10 seconds in second gear. RPMs go up to and over 2,000 when I hit 20 mph or above and it takes like 10 seconds (which feels like forever) for it to change to 3rd gear. Then it takes about another 10 seconds to change from 3rd to 4th gear.

This has been the case since I bought the vehicle 11 months ago. Is this normal? And isn't this hurting my fuel economy? javascript:emoticon('')

That doesnt sound right to me. The only thing that your car should be doing when the blue light is on is not shift into overdrive. You might want to ask your service department about it. I notice that they tend to shift a little sluggish when the tranny fluid is cold, but if my car was doing what you describe I would have it checked out.

This is perfectly normal for the xB. When the car is cold it will hang in second gear for a while before the transmission fluid warms up and then should begin to shift normally after a few minutes of driving. In fact, most Toyotas will do that. My tacoma takes about 5 minutes of driving time to warm up enough to change gears normally. If it's cold, it'll rev up to about 3,000 rpm before shifting into third gear.

You have nothing to worry about!

Maybe I missunderstood. If it is just shifting @ a higher RPM then I agree with everyone else. I thought he meant it was hanging in between gears wich wouldnt be normal.

I have the same problem with my 06. The dealer said this is normal on toyota engines.

Get a remotestart put on, and you wont have to worry about that anymore. Start the car up 5-15 mins before you leave and the engine will be nice and warmed up when you get in it. No more stupid little blue light anymore. Just my two cents....

Default blue light

Mine does the same thing. It is to help the engine warm up faster. Blue light usually goes out after a mile or so of driving. About 2 miles on really cold days. I just drive conservative till it goes out.

Blue light means everything is cold and you are probably WAY over exagerating on the 10 sec.

It's actually recommended to warm the car up while driving. Letting the car idle for 5-15 minutes wastes huge amounts of gas and works your cat pretty hard too plus the extra emissions don't help anything. Heck, many places don't allow diesel trucks to idle for more than 5 minutes without having to shut it off.

Just drive it easily during that short amount of time and when it's time to change the oil and tranny fluid, don't skimp on the cheap stuff... Just my $0.02
