I found a crack yesterday in the plastic that meets the rear door on the passenger side! Does anyone else have a crack in their plastic?

We were at a meet on Sunday and there was another Scion xB there that had the same type of crack, only on the drivers side.

Here is are some links to pictures of the crack.

My first post has links to the crack.

And yeah, I totally have to give the hatch a good push to shut it, but i thought that it was because the mat was shifted or something.

I have the same crack on the passenger side. I Think it is suppose to be there.. The crack is straight across, kinda like it joining the two pieces of plastic together. If it was a stress crack it will be rough or not perfectly straight across

Maybe you are right mod7XB, I just never noticed it until yesterday. Of course my first reaction was to freak out...now I am just wondering if all xB's have identical cracks, or if it is just some random thing.

no crack here. maybe some of the models have it, and some don't. i don't know. isn't it funny that it's only on one side?

I really got close to it today...I was all in the crack ; ). Anyways, it is not a straight crack it looks like a stress fracture, and to boot there is a small crack that is starting on the drivers side.

Not stressed, i'm going to take it down to the dealer and have them look at it, who knows maybe it is from the sudden change in temp around here.

use Krazy glue to seal the cracks...then sniff to get high...it's like killing 2 birds with one stone...u get high and get to fix the crack..haha. Maybe that's where the term "crack" derived from...lol.

gotta chk mine now for cracks...maybe ppl are slamming their doors too hard...

but seriously...i think whoever has cracks should take it into the dealers..we don't have bumper to bumper 3 years warranty for nothing.

This is offtopic, but the term "crack" comes from the sound it makes when you smoke crack. It CRACKS.

We have two xBs at my house and one has the mysterious crack and the other one does not. For what it is worth the xB with the crack was built in June and has almost 7K mikes while the crack-free xB was built in July and has only 1K miles on it. I agree that it looks too perfect to be a break, but it is certainly curious that it is only on some cars, on one side, and the same side whenever it appears...

Checked out mine and I do not have a crack yet. I was wondering if this might be related to lowering the car. Does anyone who has not lowered their car have the crack?

i'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with lowering the car. i have put my car through the torture test and it's still crack free and running strong.

Ours has almost 6000 miles on it, so maybe that has some truth to that tbp. We have a two inch drop, but I doubt very highly that has anything to do with it. I am just going to take it in and have it looked at. Bumper to Bumper baby, thank goodness for warranties.

the xB is so airtight that the big rear hatch is harder to shut....

i leave a side door ajar and shut the hatch first.....works well for me....

yeah, the crack in the picture is awfully straight

does not seem to really be a crack :?: you would think if it was a crack, it would be uneven or something....

look closer.....it isn't straight, it has jagged edges. Definitely a crack...plus the fact that only a few people have the crack should also be a clue that it isn't normal.

The debate over whether or not it is a straight crack, yikes, the link above is a better picture of it with the door open. I will let everyone know what the dealer says; I am taking it down there on Monday.

I'm not mad or anything, I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew that I wasn't being neurotic. The angle of the original picture wasn't very good, and even the new pic doesn't give it full justice.

I have a feeling that it is just going to be a "well isn't that weird" thing at the dealer. I just thought that I would ask everyone because I saw a crack in another xB at one of the get-togethers I went to.

All will hopefully be resolved Monday, Vicki

Water tight like a seals crack?

Sorry, just playing around a little bit. I cant beleive that the box is that air tight, that is seriously amazing. Question, if you have the heat blasting and get it thoughly baking inside; if you turn the heat off does it cool down real quick or hold the heat for a while? I've noticed with my fiance's Rav4 that it looses its heat VERY quickly.

From the looks of it, it is a crack caused by differential expansion of the plastic and either the glass or the body metal. On a cold night, the plastic contracts more than the glass or metal it is attached to. The long thing piece of plastic would probably crack on a plane perpendicular to the length of the part, which is exactly how the picture appears.

does anybody have a smiley or .jpg of "over my head" ?

Sorry, I think I understand the logic behind your madness, different materials contract and expand at differnt rates which will cause stress on the opposing materials...

*right*

I took the car into the dealership today. They took one look at it and said that it was undoubtedly a large crack in the plastic. The service writer had to order the part so it isn't fixed yet, but he said that it shouldn't take to long to get the part in. He also said that we should watch a small line that is beginning to form on the driver's side, because it may begin to crack soon. I am sure that it will all be ok though so no stress here.

It will be completely covered by the warranty is what I was told. So, if anyone out there has a crack in there plastic make sure you get it in and get it taken care of. He did say that he hasn't seen any come in with there window trim cracked yet, so maybe it was some sort of impurity in the plastic?

Well that is enough about my crack...Vicki ; )

Oh, and one final note I was way off on our mileage, after last weekends trip to the Good Guys Show there is almost 9100 miles on our xB.

Check this:

That black "plastic" that goes around the door frames is actually tape!!! If you peel if off (ask rick...scionstars...or Erick C) there's actually metal underneath that is colormatched to the body of the xB. It's a beeeyooootch to peel off, but if you do it's pretty cool. I bet the "mystery cracks" are just the tape getting jacked up for some of the cars.
Mine is still crack free, and I'm not brave enough to peel off the tape, although it looks pretty sweet on the cars that have done it.

No, his crack is in the vertical plastic piece immediately behind the rear door opening, at the forward edge of the rearmost side glass. It's not tape.

I did an inspection of all the cars that came to the Canyon Cruise and didn't see any similar cracks on them, so it doesn't seem to be a universal problem, at least not yet.

Well I got a PM regarding the crack and I realized that I never posted the outcome of the situation. I went down to Folsom Lake Toyota and they ordered the part. It took them all day, and I mean all day to get it fixed but it was done at no charge. It did take about 2 weeks for them to get the part in though. Also, I think it took so long because I dropped the car off at 9: 30 and they kept pushing it back, the window guy called at like 3:30 (because I had called them like 5 times trying to find out why it was taking so long) and said they were just about to start it and that it would take about 30 minutes. Oh well I guess, at least it was covered under warranty.

Vicki : )
