What areas in Chicago are best deal for Home purchase?
I am trying to find a job ideally in the Chicago area. My father in law lives just North of where 90 and 94 split. My wife and I went online and were pretty depressed to see what houses in our price range in areas we know go for.
So far the only area we found that was in our price range and not a $275K house that needs to be gutted was in Elgin. Never heard of it before. Is it a safe area? Anyone have any suggestions on where to look, I am more than capable at home improvement things so a fixxer upper is not a problem just want to pay a price that makes it possible to do the improvements. Do not want to be house poor like a lot of people are.
Thanks for any input on real estate or even if you know of someone hiring a technical sales person, account manager, or distributor rep.
Hope your weather is better than ours today. Snow ansd freezing rain with Autorama load in tonight.
Hope to be your neighbor soon,
Charlie

are there any specifics you need? (minimum # of bedrooms / # of bathrooms, sq ft minimum. single family home/condo/loft, schools, etc) and what is your target price?
there are still a few 'affordable' areas near the city, and in the suburbs without having to commute over an 1hr. but, need specifics first to better assist you.

right now we have about 1600 square feet and then the basement is my wife's studio. Ideally we would like 2 or 3 bedrooms (3 preferred) and at least 1.5 bath.
We have two big dogs (newfoundland and old english sheepdog) so prefer a single family home,. Would love a two car garage but would just be happy with a garage. I am already preparing myself to have to sell my 73 VW convertible.
Like I said my faher in law is in the Peterson and Pulaki are so trying our best to stay around an hour from there. When we live close we go to dinner often.
Also I need room in the basement or a room large enough to set up y wife's studio. She does ceramics so I have a couple kilns, a pttery wheel and some other items along with jewelry tools.
Actually we are doing the art fair in Elmhurst May 6 and 7 I believe.
Thanks for any help in advance,

Also, you can go to banks and get information of homes in forclosure. My father buys these homes and repairs them for a profit. I'm not sure about anything on the North Side but if you start looking south let me know. I also know a few people that could find a home for you.
just so everyone starts complaining about something.
I live in Chesterton, IN, near the South Shore (train into chicago) and 3 iterstates that go into chicago.
the drive from here to downtown is just over an hour and about 1.5 to ohare.
wife and I have a brand new 4 bedroom house, tri-level, 2 car garage, 3 bathroom and it was 200,000. houses around this area are equivalent.
most of the people that live around here, work in chicago, but some people think its to far, but thats cuz they're pretty little flowers :p
if you have kids, apparently it also has a good school system and if u do and they r athletic good sport teams and league.

Alex thanks for the info....I wondered why you lived where you did. Wife will not go for that one. She wants to be as close to her dad as possible. She keeps looking at condos in lincoln park. I am trying hard to stay on top of that one. I do not want a condo or townhouse. I can not have neighbors attached to my home again. Big dogs would drive other people nuts. I will post again when I come closer to having a job. Should try my best to be close to work since traffic can be a pain in the ***.
Best of luck to you all at HIN and when is SE Chicago going live online?
