Default cabin air filter...? please help

The dealership told me that the scions need it, and that it doesnt come with one from the factory, and that its 69.99 installed. Is this true, I can't belive that they made a spot for it and never put one if from the factory. But if this is true, does anyone know where it goes, because ill just buy the 20$ filter myself and put it in, thanks.

Well you don't "need" it. Some people say it restricts the airflow. Do yourself a favor and just pick up a furnace filter and cut it to size. The fiter tray is behind the glovebox.

It's worth making one. Cheap.
Get good 3M Filtrete filters at any home-store and you can either make 2 or 4, depending on the size.
You can fugg things up if you get something too restrictive, so just stick with one layer of the above and you'll be fine.

10 minutes in the hardware store, 10 minutes cutting and installing.

Easy.

And if you have allergies like my wife and I do, it's even more valuable.
Well worth the effort, IMO.

We got by for years without them. Toyota just started using them around 2001, and they're still not in every vehicle they make. You don't HAVE to have one, but it does filter out a lot of crap.
I was under the impression that the tC did have one in it from the factory.
We sell the filters for $29.95 and I think they're around $70 installed. A lot of them are easy to do yourself, and I have seen people do the furnace filter thing. Not a bad idea for the money!

Very odd - I called my dealer and one other, and they had no part numbers for the tC filters.
I'm glad actually, because I then found the DIY on this and saved a bunch of money.

Those prices are a freakin' joke. For the filter and the install.

Default to filter or not to filter

First off the AC evaporator is pretty small and it can get clogged with all sorts of dust and mold spores and get pretty nasty after a year or two and then the cooling efficiency drops and along with that your mileage and coolness on a hot day. Not to mention the funny smells that can come out of it when it gets damp.

2005 xB came with it installed from what I hear and then the 2006 they left them out.

I made one for my xB from a $3.00 hot air filter - not quite a hepa but pretty good - actually I got three out of it - it took more than 10 minutes to do it however - cut them up with some heavy duty sissors and then folded it up to make it pleated to increase the surface area then silicone sealed it into the tray. I still didn't do the second filter element on the outside of the heater box however that filters the recirculated air. May make a trip back to AutoZone and see if they got any Bosch filters in yet - they list one for the xB but didn't have any in stock yet.

so by restrictive, you mean less air comin through the vents? hmm, in the summer heat that might not be the best down here in Florida...does it help with moisture too? cause its like 98% humidity down here everyday in the summer.

FWIW, I cut those paper borders and Xs off of mine...it will just restrict the airflow.

there is no part number. Most of us went to Home Depot to pick up a 1 inch thick air filter. Then we cut them down to size.
