The story on the ____streams is that he jumped a very small curb around a corner @ 30mph and the wheels took the blunt of the impact. That's all I know.

"That would have happened to any rim" is a general statement which is simply not true. "It would have happened to any $150 cast wheel" is a more accurate statement. I have seen this happen to several wheels, and each was of poor quality.

However you get what you pay for, and he is only going to pay maybe $150 to replace those.

the reason why i reply was i heard rota has the best quality in that price range...
some people just cant afford expensive wheels...

from the pics you show above, the wheel damaged like that, there might be damages on the suspension parts too...thats BAD...

i might have to re-consider about wheels...

what about forged wheels?? is it easier to damage like that since they crack right away when u hit it?

Forged wheels are stronger than cast wheels--and will typically bend instead of cracking away like the pictures show of the cast rotas.

I don't know about you--but i'd prefer bending a wheels if I had an accident and still needed to drive to safety instead of something that will crack and fall apart while still on the car. What's worse, bending a wheel, or being killed because the wheel seperated into 2 pieces while you were driving!!!!

I know probably 500 people with rotas, you have to beat the ever-living ____ out of those wheels to get them to do that.

They are not crap. If you drive normal, you will have no problems with the wheel structure.

And there's a warranty on the structure too.

I still think there great looking rims.....my fiance is buying them for me when I get the xB next month....getting flat gunmetal in 16 x 7 with a 40 offset....they will look niiiiiccceeeee...on a Camo green xB

Sure, if you abuse any wheel they will break like that, and I have seen instances with their sub-zero wheel, they area very strong wheel and Rota stands by their products very well. I curbed the crap out of one of my wheel and they broke a set of 4 and replaced it for free.

FYI OZ Superleggeras are CAST wheels.

I'm not a Rota fan myself but they have their place in the market and their quality control is better than most other similarly priced wheels.

Snapping on the CSI gloves, if you look at that first picture, the entire lip or rim of that wheel is scraped to bare metal which means that wheel encountered a load along a really unfortunate axis... Not many wheels are designed to take strikes on their face, forged or not. A small curb is as immovable as a big curb. If you look at the second wheel, I think its pretty obvous where that impact occured :)

I'm not pretending that forged wheels arent better than cast, they are! Its just not my opinion that these pictures are detrimental to cast wheels or Rota wheels. Working as a sales engineer for a few different companies, the #1 rule I've learned is:

"Cheap, Fast, and Good. Pick 2." Substitute Lightweight for fast :)

Personally I cant see that being a curb that did that....I am thinking something alot taller and stronger....like an actual wall of some sort.....

I had 2 Sprint Harts crack on me before on my Integra. It had a crack about 11 inches long and 3 inches wide. The other one bent. This is from going over a pot hole on the 405 FWY going 60 MPH. I was running on 45 series tires.

I had the same thing happen to a Work Wheel and I bent an old SSR Super Mesh back in the day.

I even seen a truck with Billet wheels bend 2 wheels when he ran over a pipe.

I never used Rotas in the past but I know they are quite popular in the Phillipines were they are made, If you have ever lived there or driven there..the city streets are crappy and it's like pothole heaven.... I know if Rotas can withstand those kind of conditions..then it's a strong wheel.

My cousin shipped over BBS Wheels to put on his Mercedes back home and he messed them up good..

I think no matter what..if you hit a pothole or any other object hard enough with low profile tires..you are gonna damage them.


But if you are talking about road racing..I would invest on a good quality wheel.

Jason has a good point though..I'd rather have a rim bend rather than crack and shatter..but like I said..I had some JDM Sprint Hart Hyper Tuners and they just got messed up....I bought another set and I have them for over 7 years now with out a single bend or crack...I guess it also depends on luck....
