see if the seats can be adjusted to a level/postion that you are comfortable with (for me, even at the lowest height, the seat is still too high for me)

you drive the car for about 20 mins.

stop and go traffic , and highway, see if you can deal with both.

make sure you are comfortable

make sure youre happy with the climate control and stereo

make sure you can see out of all the windows and mirrors.

Make sure you run it up to 75mph or so for a while, to see if you mind the high rpms at highway speeds. If a 5spd, do you mind doing the 1st to 2nd shift immediately, half-way across an intersection? Also notice how much steering correction is required, as the tC tends to go directly where pointed, rather than follow the road as many cars do.

Man, i remember when i took the car for a test drive. I didnt look at the shifter closely at the time and didnt notice that i put it to 3 instead of D. so when i was cruising on the highway for a bit, it was going at 60 or so at 3500 rpm. that freaked me out a bit.

Just make sure you cover as many situations as you can and check out all features to make sure they all suit you. I wasnt really looking for a car (just went in to look at them because they were new.. bad idea ), and the salesperson came out with a tag and a key and told me they would be there for about another hour and to take it for a spin.. so I did. Drove it for about 45 min, highway speed and city traffic and used all controls. I even stopped to play with all the seats and to see how everything worked. Ordered on the next day The only thing I didnt like with the test drive was that they only had an auto on the lot that night, which I knew I wouldnt get anyway, whether it be city traffic or highway I would much rather have the 5 spd.. but that is just me.

when i test drove one, they only let me drive it for like 20 minutes, had the dude with me to watch me like a hawk because i don't think they took me seriously. never went back to that dealer, but also held off on buying. that was last year. depending on how the next dealer treats me, we'll see if i buy or not. i wish they would let you take it home for 24 hours, i know some dealers in small towns do that. i'm not sure about big cities, though.
