View Full Version : best way 2 redout taillights????
gsRt5 03-14-2006, 02:23 AM I was wondering what is the best way?....
I get another set of stock taillights tommorrow and wanted to know what is the best route.......I went to the hobby store and they only had Tamiya clear red so I picked up a few cans if I go this route........
Should I use the overlays???.
Or should I attempt to take them apart and spray them???...
What would give me the best lighting and life span?????...
Do the overlays begin to fade??.......
Help me out....
JDMJim 03-14-2006, 02:59 AM used red clear vinyl. Can be removed if you decide to go back to white tails.
bB2NER 03-14-2006, 06:40 AM If you don't ever want to put them back to stock. Spray them with the testors transparent red then clearcoat them. Other wise do the red coverlays from bluebatmobile.
SquallLHeart 03-14-2006, 07:40 AM my friend uses the tamiya candy red.. clear red.. sure... for all of his redouts... a lot of his friends has had him spray them and they've lasted for quite awhile now... he also adds a clear coat too... just to finish it up.
DJ_SpaRky 03-14-2006, 12:50 PM if you do spray them, take them apart & spray the inside of the lens, so that you don't have to worry about it fading & clouding up.
Blue_Batmobile 03-14-2006, 12:56 PM You can slao Overlay it :).

You're fine on the Net card thing. Millions do it daily.
I second the interior spray, not the exterior spray.
Capt_Jack_Sparrow 03-16-2006, 01:40 AM I'm having a hard time taking apart my stock tail light housing - is the easiet way to open them is by putting them in the oven then popping them open? any suggestions?

250F, 5 minutes.
If you are trying to pull out on the clear part, you WILL crack them. I did.
You need to do more pushing in on the grey part than prying out on the clear lens. The grey is flexible, the clear is not. See the Tech section, redout alternative #2. Stick a small flat head screwdriver between the two parts and twist while pushing in.
Max2k 03-16-2006, 04:48 AM Spray them red from the inside. I wrote it up in the FAQ section.
You get a perfect finish and it won't fade or get a million little tiny scratches.

Dremel down the bottom two notches before putting them in the oven. Comes apart easy breezy.

Yeah, heating them is probably not necessary, but it is a nice "safety feature" if you will.
That clear lens is VERY brittle!
